Who Who Transports Whom or What Where to – and What for? A Critical Approach to Augmented and Virtual Reality in Educational Contexts

    No full text
Augmented Reality (AR) und Virtual Reality (VR) have been increasingly discussed in the context of their application at schools. AR and VR are expected to offer new possibilities for studying and teaching: on the one hand, students are supposed to be transported to past times or unreachable places and should experience those from the perspective or in the body of another person. On the other hand, there is the potential to bring objects or people into the classroom in order to investigate or interview them. This article analyzes the aforementioned transportation into other times, places and bodies, which is connected with AR and VR. Therefore, it focusses on one feature which the author calls ‹picture without frame›. This characteristic of AR and VR is not regarded as a fixed element or as a part of the technology per se. Instead of that it is explained as the interplay of the operational logic of both technologies and the discourse (about the learning success). With the help of Augmented and Virtual Reality applications for the subjects Sports, History and Geography it will be illustrated how the ‹picture without frame› influences the content of these applications. Moreover, it will be discussed, how associations of knowledge and power offer new challenges for didactics

Bridging the Gap? Heterotopias of Old Age and Media Bridges for Creative Ageing in Times of COVID 19

The topography of old age has been radically changed by the pandemic: the protective measures against the infection with Covid 19 result in a previously unprecedented spatial distance between the generations. Eventually, the regulations of the so-called social distancing have especially affected the group of over-50s who are considered to be particularly vulnerable. Cultural facilitators and artists reacted quickly to this situation by developing alternative offers for the age group that take into account the demands of physical distance. Diverse media spaces, digital and analogue bridges and channels have been constructed to overcome the gap between the generations that the pandemic has opened. Following Michel Foucault‘s concept of heterotopia (Foucault 1967/1990, cf. also Haller 2011/2020) my contribution analyzes from a cultural topological perspective (spatial turn) three case studies and the particular media channels and subjectivations they developed. My study outlines the potential of these cultural geragogical projects to build spaces for resonance and heterotopic reflection in times of Corona

The Editorial offers an overview regarding the articles gathered in this special issue and puts them into context along theoretical as well as current education policy discourses. To this end, theoretical guiding themes that have been important in the reviewing process of the articles are outlined in a first step: School development, Digitalization and Collaboration therefore are key topics in all articles, albeit they are embraced to a varying degree of intensity. By introducing these key topics and highlighting their interrelations, the editorial addresses the questions of how the term school development is defined, how school development interrelates with digitalization and why collaboration is known as a feature of successful school development for education in a digital world, both theoretically and in terms of the current state of research. This is followed by a synthesis of the contributions to the issue. The 20 contributions are examined in terms of their underlying research designs as well as their methodological and theoretical approaches. From this, few «blind spots» are uncovered, which the editors consider important in the context of processes of school development for education in a digital world which, however, are not yet (extensively) addressed in the contributions and therefore offer themselves to be taken up in future research. To conclude, the impact this special issue holds in the overall discourse in this topic area is emphasized. In addition, several challenges demanding further research into processes of school development for education in a digital world are highlighted

Teaching-Related Teacher Collaboration in the Age of Digital Transformation: All Digital or Everything as Before?

B. Endberg et al. 2020).Teaching-related teacher collaboration in the age of digital transformation is considered as an essential condition for success for a contemporary school- and teaching development (Gräsel, Schledjewski, and Hartmann 2020) and can at the same time be located as an important school quality characteristic on the school process level (Ditton 2017). So far, however, it is unclear how the current collaboration practices at lower secondary schools in Germany are taking form, as there is reason to believe that collaboration is itself changing under the influence of the digital transformation. Based on a nationally representative sample, an instrument for capturing instruction-related teacher collaborations in the age of digital transformation is presented and the extent to which collaborations take place is demonstrated. The study also examines whether digital media are used in this context. Classic forms of collaboration are still to be found, but media-related forms are gaining in importance. The instrument can offer (future) teachers as well as science, possibilities for reflection and capturing of media-related collaboration behaviour, considering different forms of collaboration, and thus support school development processes. The criterion-oriented development can enable a subsequent adaptation to further media-related collaboration contexts in the field of education, for example with regard to the collaboration of participants in school networks (e.g. Endberg et al. 2020)

Immersive Learning for Low-Literate People: Opportunities of Augmented Reality in Basic Financial Literacy

The present findings show that the promises of the digitalisation of learning have not (yet) been fulfilled. Despite digital offerings, access to education is highly selective in the various educational sectors, and the use of educational offerings (still) depends on individual educational socialisation, age and place of residence. These findings are anything but encouraging, especially for adult education, which relies heavily on voluntary participation in its educational offerings. The article shows which approaches immersive adult education offers – and here especially in the area of literacy/basic education – can use to realise a high level of participant loyalty as well as favourable learning prognoses. The focus is particularly on how immersive learning opportunities must be designed in terms of content and instruction in order to address a variety of challenges in basic education courses (e.g. topics relevant to life, independence of learning location, ability to collaborate). The concept presented here also focuses on the increasingly changing role of course offerings in basic education (from social spaces to learning spaces) and explores the potential of immersive and game-based course design with augmented reality

time (space) matters: ediated Time (Spaces) in Video Tutorials

This contribution focuses on video tutorials used for teaching and learning. It looks at their medial properties and probes their (media-specific) educational potential. We enquire both into some of the implicit features of such tutorials – e.g., translations and transformations between media, or moments of showing and explaining with their distinct medial properties – as well as their explicit use: specifically, the educational potential they may yield if audio-visual means of designing and creating are employed in media-sensitive fashion. Given the current developments in teaching practices (such as blended and distance learning), a more detailed investigation of the aesthetic dimension of these teaching tools seems to be indicated. Video tutorials often guarantee their users’ successful acquiring of skills, e.g. of drawing a perspective ‹correctly›; and they implicitly promise an easy grasp of the subject, practical feasibility and quick, self-determined access to learning content (e.g. by fast-forwarding, pausing or replaying content). At the same time, they promote a logic of effectiveness which may hide normative ideas that users uncritically adopt and reproduce. Looking into their means of presentation may allow for a media-sensitive critique of their representational logic. ‹Amateur› negligence may, for example, turn out to be educational – if unsettled/-ling images protect the users of such tutorials from the illusion of a mere passive ‹understanding› – and instead direct the attention to their own perception and their own position in relation to the subjects that are being presented and explained to them. As part of a transformative educational theory, such perceptual disturbances are potentially more empowering than, for example, knowledge about perspective as a symbolic form as such. They invite a critical engagement with the latter. In our contribution, we will use both conventional critical methods and more experimental artistic strategies to explore the educational potential of video tutorials

The Creation of a Learning Environment with Immersive Virtual Reality for Science Teaching in Primary School According to the M-iVR-L Framework

Digitisation and learning with digital media have become even more important, not least because of the Covid-19 pandemic. To enable such learning, opportunities must be created that are appropriate for pupils. To this end, (future) teachers must be able to design digital learning opportunities and prepare them didactically. It has become clear over the past year and a half that digital learning cannot be thought of exclusively for secondary schools. Good concepts are already needed for the primary level. In this article, based on the Meaningful-immersive Virtual Reality-Learning framework (M-iVR-L framework) by Mulders, Buchner, and Kerres (2020, 213), an example is given of what the implementation of a Virtual Reality (VR) learning opportunity could look like in science learning of primary school. Using the example of already existing 360°-images of the research vessel Sonne, the theoretical implementation of the six steps of the M-iVR-L framework are run through. In the process, a concept will be considered that involves future teachers of science education in primary school in the design of the VR learning opportunity in order to teach them a competent and reflective approach to digital media directly during their studies. In the future, VR learning opportunities are to be created and evaluated on this basis together with students of science teaching

    Methodological Reflection

By the explorative study and the associated methodological preliminary considerations, a methodologically compatible comparative methodology was developed for the structural media education. In the last part of the thesis, the main findings and results from the two previous parts will be summarised and reflected upon. The focus here is on the two central questions of the thesis: What can a comparative methodology look like in the context of structural media education? Which construction principles for educational potentials can be derived from the comparative methodology? Therefore, with regard to the developed analysis process, the aspects of sampling, material generation and the coding process, as the basis of the comparative methodology, will first be the focus of reflection. Subsequently, with a view to the higher coding levels, the construction principles of educational potentials will be examined in the context of the comparative methodology developed

Presence and Self-Efficacy in the VR-Classroom

Modern training approaches enable the use of immersive technologies in training and studies, partly for the feeling of being in the mediated world (presence). Media consumers experience presence when they locate themselves in the mediated world and classify it as their primary space for action. By perceiving the world as a space for interaction, they create the basis for solving challenges themselves. Training should further support learners in the subjective certainty of being able to master future challenges on the basis of their own competencies (self-efficacy). Thus, it is hypothesized that presence has a positive impact on self-efficacy. This is investigated and finally falsified with a virtual reality training environment in teacher training in history didactics
