While the everyday life of adolescents is shaped by an intensive embedding of digital media, the question arises whether this development is also reflected in the research field of educational research in youth media. In order to come closer to an answer, the article takes stock of educational media research for young people in German-speaking countries with the aim of balancing. It becomes clear that the research field has developed specific contours that have emerged in recent years

Media as a Mediating Instance of Transnational Identities: German Migrants in the United Kingdom

Based on Elias and Scotson’s (1990) idea of the established and the outsiders, German migrants show insecurities regarding their transnational European identity. After extensive efforts to establish a new private and professional home in the UK over years and even decades, everything seems to change with Britain’s exit from the EU and its associated societal change. Social exclusions, separation from former friends, and the fear of possible rejection from the labor market due to political disagreements eventually lead to migrants’ considerations to return to Germany. Although all participants still maintain an existing social network in Germany and claim to miss the German language, culture, and social attitude, they also feel alienated from their country of origin. As outsiders in both countries, continuous exchange with friends and family in Germany via media helps the German migrants to reduce fears of alienation and strengthen their hybrid transnational European identity

Particularly in the context of the implementation of new technologies in the world of work, vocational pedagogy as a discipline is challenged to develop and evaluate concepts and approaches that are coping with learning and addressing the enhancement of competence development in the work process by digital media. The «LAARA»-project tackles the question of how augmented reality technology can be used from a didactic-methodological perspective to support the training and qualification of skilled workers in the metal industry. The focus is set on a special bending process for metal pipes, for which context-sensitive aids and information offers are used and evaluated in different scenarios directly in the work process. The article outlines the application concept of AR technology and the learning approach. In order to analyze the corresponding shaping criteria, different settings are implemented that take into account the technology, the initial expertise of the participants and the existing media affinity as distinctive features for work process-oriented and media-supported learning

Editorial: The Presentation of Artifical Life Forms in Computer Games: Construction Principles for the Analysis of Educational Potentials

Representations of artificial life forms not only fire the imagination, but are also an expression of a reflection of technological progress. Whether robotics, synthetic biology or artificial intelligence: many technological developments are reflected in media representations, such as computer games. Structural media education aims to work out the educational potential of these media articulations (cf. Jörissen and Marotzki 2009, 39). However, structural media education has two major gaps in its methodology. On the one hand, it lacks a codified comparative methodology for the elaboration of educational potentials that go beyond a work analysis. Secondly, the heuristic of Kant’s four dimensions of lifeworld orientation comes into play for the elaboration of educational potentials. The problem here is that it has not been sufficiently clarified to what extent this heuristic can depict the processuality and potentiality of educational potentials in the context of media articulations. These two circumstances gave rise to two essential questions for this work: What might a comparative methodology look like in the context of structural media education? What construction principles for educational potentials can be derived from comparative methodology? Through a methodological comparison, common points of reference between Structural Media Education and the Grounded Theory Methodology according to Strauss and Corbin (1996), as well as the further developments of Adele Clarke (2012), via pragmatism, could be identified. Here, the inclusion of Jung’s (2005) concept of medial articulation was an essential theoretical as well as methodological starting point for the linkage. By combining the two research styles, a multilevel model of analysis emerged, based on a study that examined the representations of artificial life forms in the Mass Effect trilogy. From the basis of open coding and the resulting category system and structural coding, which captured the medial aspects of the representations, the so-called structural phenomena were worked out, which combine axial coding and structural aspects. Here, the essential phenomena were worked out in the context of the representation of artificial life forms. It turned out that an investigation of educational potentials can already take place at this level of analysis. However, it turns out that the central phenomenon in the analysis that connects the structural phenomena is the representation of imperfection of artificial life forms. With regard to the construction principles of educational potentials, the following analytical levels were worked out by combining Jung’s considerations and Clarke‘s mapping levels, which capture overarching connections of meaning. The pattern level captures the representations that are similar in terms of their playful sub-processes and representations (summarised in the structural phenomena). Five patterns of depicted imperfection could be identified in the Mass Effect trilogy. The genesis of the patterns was accompanied by a structural interpretation which, by relating the structural phenomena, produced certain patterns of development and their playful conditions for individual representations of artificial life forms. As an analytical deepening, the level of comparison of patterns was added so that more general representational tendencies became visible. In this context, two families of patterns were elaborated within the framework of the study, which were in turn compared with each other. In this way, two general and contrasting patterns of orientation representations were revealed. At the same time, the level of the game experience was elaborated so that the process of producing these representations, which includes the relationship between game and play, was analysed in terms of educational theory. The level of media positioning examines the outer limits of the representations. It is about the analytical elaboration of the limits of the representations, the possible ways of playing and the technically conditioned limits and transcendences. With regard to these construction principles of educational potentials, it can be stated that the dimensions of lifeworld orientation are no longer grasped as heuristics, but as processes of lifeworld orientation. In this respect, Immanuel Kant’s first three questions are transformed from the mode of what to the mode of how: How can I know? How do I act? How do I reach boundaries? The biographical reference is derived from these three questions. In the context of the methodology developed, this is located in the moment of medial articulation. On the one hand, in the moment of expression, which represents the subjective game experience, and on the other hand, in the form of what is expressed, which finds its expression in the gameplay

Selection and Generation of Suitable Feedback Based on a Feedback Rating System

Feedback is one of the most important aspects of the teaching-learning process. But not all feedbacks are suitable for every learner in terms of comprehensibility and effectiveness. On the other hand, personalized feedback from the teacher cannot be implemented for a number of learners that exceed the capacity. In contrast, a computer-based learning system can provide appropriate feedback quickly and in a scalable manner. There are already some approaches to provide the learners with adaptive or personalized feedback when processing tasks, considering individual diversity characteristics. The selection of suitable feedbacks could, however, also depend on several diversity characteristics. For this reason, a novel learning system is proposed that uses various characteristics of diversity on a socio-technical basis to generate, select and suggest appropriate feedback

Twist it once, twist it twice: Media Practices between Artistic Intervention and Informal Media Education

This contribution addresses the potential of interactive artistic-documentary configurations as well as the challenges that arise with regard to educational offerings in, with, and through digital network media. The focus lies on three aspects which are essential in the context of media education: (1) the oscillation of media experiences in interactive factuals between subjectivisation and collectivisation; (2) their promise of participation; and (3) their contribution to advancing (media) competences vis-à-vis digital sovereignty, new media literacy and agency. The guiding questions are: To what extent can experimental configurations be regarded as informal/non-formal educational media? And: In how far can they inspire – on a meta level or through their experience design – a critically-reflective view of one’s own ‹digital persona›? After a brief overview of self-reflexive interactive-documentary configurations and a media-historical and media-ecological situating of the phenomenon, two projects which are rather typical of web-documentaries will be examined with regard to their contribution to digital sovereignty. These projects are primarily based on procedural-rhetorics, narrative immersion and complexly networked provision of information, thus enhancing what can be described as digital literacy. In a second step, network effect (USA 2015; Harris and Hochmuth) will be used as a paradigm to discuss the potential of aesthetically radical, irritating projects used as provocative-paradoxical interventions to expand the spectrum of classical strategies of the documentary, but also of formal educational processes. The guiding question is to what extent experimental emerging configurations can be regarded as infor-mal/non-formal educational media and in how far they can inspire – on a meta level or through their experien-tial design – a critically-reflective view of one\u27s own ‹digital persona›.   After a short overview of self-reflexive interactive documentary, network effect (USA 2015, Harris & Hochmuth), a configuration which is situated between interactive netart and web-documentarism, will serve as a teststone for the proposition that it is through aesthetically radical means and an irritating experience desgin that a critical stance towards one\u27s own media practices is inspired; and that it is possibly precisely through provocative-paradoxical interventions that boundaries of both classical strategies of formal educational and documentary formats are pushed further

(re)united!? New Research Perspectives at the Intersection of Arts Education and Media Education

This article is about the relationship between cultural education and media pedagogy. The conference title speaks of an intersection, but considering the objects of both educational fields, the question arises to what extent it is at all possible to think of them as radically separate outside of a common intersection. Starting with a consideration of central concepts and discourse logics, the authors develop an integrative perspective of these two fields of discourse based on the final discussion of the Joint Conference. Drawing on central ideas and thoughts from cultural studies, implications for research, discourse, and practice are then developed

Digital Collages and Aesthetic-Communicative Networking: Insights into a Workshop of the NFKB Research Cluster Interaction and Participation

This contribution documents – especially visually – impressions, observations and results from an online workshop «Interaction and Participation in Cultural Education», which aimed to present topics, working methods and principles of the research cluster. It made sense to conceptualize the workshop itself in an interactive and participative manner, as well as along the theme of the framing conference. A large part of the communication is shifted to a digital whiteboard parallel to the video conference, on which all participants can act individually and together. Central fragments from a text of the cluster are available as material, in which the terms interaction and participation are negotiated in a joint self-experiment and guided by the principle of collage. The text principle becomes the operating principle of the workshop: The participants are exposed to the attempt to create collages themselves in small groups on the digital whiteboard using both the provided and their own material. In the experimental format of the workshop, an aesthetic-digital space of possibility and experience is contoured performatively, in which the individual positions and perspectives of all participants interactively enter into networked forms of articulation via text, image and language. In the resulting collages, aspects of aesthetics, digitality and power come into play in an impressive way

Digitization as an Enduring Task: School Development Between new Obligations and Increasing Workload

This paper focuses on the question of the impact of the funding program DigitalPakt and the school closures in the Corona pandemic on the signs and tendencies of a deep(er) transformation process of digitalization for schools. The qualitative study focuses the organizational development in the area of school communication and collaboration at ten schools in Bremen, combined with the question of the extent to which developments there go beyond a technology-inspired change. To this end, 26 interviews and group discussions were conducted with school leaders, media representatives, and teachers and evaluated using qualitative content analysis. The results presented provide insights into how such a digital transformation process can be described as a phenomenon of a change in school expectations to participate in digital communication and collaboration in a more obligatory way. This new commitment is situated in the area of tension between facilitating and optimizing organizational processes on the one hand and producing an increasing workload on the other. This results in challenges for the future organizational development of the school, which we will discuss regarding the digital transformation process as an enduring task

Professional Action and Media Education from the Perspective of Karl Mannheim‘s Sociology of Knowledge

    Get PDF
The reception of Karl Mannheim’s version of the Sociology of Knowledge in the field of media-education (among others) is based on its main methodological outcome, known as the “Documentary Method of Interpretation”. Mannheim’s essential works in this context are his contributions to the “Theory of Interpretation of Ideology” [Weltanschauung] (Mannheim 1964a), his distinction between communicative and conjunctive knowledge (Mannheim 1980), and his study concerning “The Problem of Generations” (Mannheim 1964b). The present article claims that the reduction of this school of thought to its mere methodological implications does not exhaust its potentials, and therefore proposes to develop the Sociology of Knowledge as a theoretical foundation for a media-pedagogical understanding of professional thinking and acting. In recourse to media-pedagogy as a particular intervention and an accepting discipline (Fromme and Meder 2000) on one hand, and to the handling of unknowingness (Hugger 2007) on the other hand, the implications for the theory of professions are reformulated considering the role of the dynamic relationism for the purpose of a knowledge-sociological programmatic
