On the Integration of Digitalisation Topics in Module Manuals of Study Courses in Social Work
Social Work is affected by the digital transformation in many different ways. This is true for the present and it can be assumed that these changes will intensify in the future due to further technological developments. These changes have an impact on the profession of Social Work, the clients and the organizations. Linked to these are demands on the education and training of social work professionals. The digital change is also of great importance for the higher education sector and has practical effects in academic training. In terms of academic training, digitalisation also has consequences for everyday university didactics and curricula. A module manual is considered to be the central document that fundamentally controls teaching and learning activities at the university; it describes the course content as well as the competencies that students shall acquire as part of their studies. Based on a document analysis of module manuals of German Social Work programs (N=180), this paper aims to answer the research question to what extent content on the topic of digitalisation is represented in these documents. While the term media literacy is found in 30% of the module handbooks and the term media education in 39.4%, the term digitalisation is only represented in 2.2% of these documents. Content on digitalisation and media literacy or media pedagogy is found more frequently in the bachelor degree programs than in the master degree programs in Social Work. The study makes it clear that content on the topic of digitalisation is not yet represented in university curricular documents. The goal of this article is to examine the topic of digitalisation in Social Work and its curricular embedding in academic training, and to initiate a discussion on this topic
To the Significance of Augmented Reality in Secondary-Level Mathematics Teaching: A Discussion of Mathematics Didactics with References to Key Teaching-Related Aspects
In terms of mathematics teaching at secondary level, there has yet to be a detailed assessment of augmented reality (AR) from the perspective of mathematics didactics. This paper seeks to redress the balance by taking key teaching-related aspects such as an appropriate image of mathematics including modelling, concept acquisition, and the open task format to be the starting point for its investigation. As a result, it notes either that spatial visualization and the integration of digital content into interactive worksheets represent important opportunities, but also that the possibilities extend into other areas of mathematics teaching like modelling teaching as well, and that there are limitations of AR
Augmented Reality in Higher Education: Considerations for a Future-Oriented Teacher Education
Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that supplements and overlays the real world with virtual information. Various technologies are available for this purpose. These include smartphones, smart glasses, head-mounted displays, and other devices. In recent years, AR has received increased attention in the field of education. Although the number of projects and publications has increased considerably, there are still research gaps regarding didactic aspects of AR in teaching in general and in the field of teacher education. This is a crucial shortcoming, as teachers are the decisive factor for a high level of integration of digital media into school teaching and thus have a substantial influence on the digitisation of public schools. This article is therefore dedicated to this topic and deals with teaching and learning with AR applications in the context of teacher education. Initially, a clarification of concepts and an overview of the central findings on AR in education will be provided and the potential and challenges attributed to the technology will be outlined. Building on this, didactic considerations and concrete educational goals for the use of AR in teacher education are illustrated. The article is intended to provide a stimulating basis for reflecting on and further developing the use of AR in teacher education
‹On the Medialization of the World and the Mediatization of Discourse›: Explorations Between the Poles of Conceptual Politics in Medial Infrastructures and Concept-Analytical Differentiations
Indications regarding the increasing relevance of the media have become ubiquitous. This concerns various discourse contexts related to everyday life as well as to economic, political, technological and scientific spheres. Frequently, references are made to relevant media and communication science analyses, which in turn operate with different concepts and theories. On the one hand, these analyses correspond to a broad spectrum of terms, descriptive modalities, and ways of thematization. On the other hand, some expressions also serve as guiding metaphors, generic terms or catchwords with programmatic or paradigmatic claims. Medialization and mediatization are among these expressions that have achieved a high degree of popularity and portability in recent years and are often used synonymously. In this paper, we first examine some aspects of politics of concepts of corresponding discourses in media studies and communications. In contrast to synonymous uses, we argue for conceptual differentiation and constructive coexistence that can prove fruitful for both theoretical and empirical research
Media Education Mastered?! Learning and Educational Processes in the Context of Digital Gaming Cultures: A Walkthrough
Digital games tell stories to a previously unknown extent, they draw players into the game world, and at the same time enable their own forms of expression through playful and creative practices. Thus, digital games and game cultures are not only interesting for research, but also attractive for innovative teaching concepts. Based on a fundamental contribution co-authored by Maic Masuch and Johannes Fromme on the importance of integrating digital games into higher education curricula, Dan Verständig and Ralf Biermann ask how digital games and game cultures are situated in the context of media education, especially in the intertwining of research and teaching. The discussion takes place along the study program of media education – audiovisual culture and communication, founded by Johannes Fromme and Winfried Marotzki in 2004 at the Otto-von-Guericke-University of Magdeburg
Between Uncertainty and Resilience: On the Productiveness of Interactional Artefacts, Disruption and Crisis in the Context of Dis/Ability
In the context of the BMBF funded project be_smart («Importance of specific music Apps for participation of young people with complex disabilities in cultural education») audio-visual data of twelve self-conducted musicking sessions with young adults in the context of dis/abilities was obtained. The article starts with a definition and differentiation of the terms «artefact», «perturbation» and «crisis» in order to conceptualize moments of interactional uncertainty. The three terms are grounded in the analysis of audio-visual data. For the matter of empirical analysis of audio-visual data the article introduces a matrix which was crucial in order to structure, analyze and showcase such data. The matrix is instrumental especially for complex analysis of socio-technical settings in the context of dis/ability
Videos in Universitarian Teacher Education: Prior Experiences, Attitudes and Quality-Related Assessments of Student Biology Teachers
Videos show a great potential for teaching and learning in schools and universities. At the same time, video formats are diverse and difficult to be defined, and there is no final agreement on criteria for good quality videos. In particular, assessing potential applications of different video formats and evaluating their quality are important for student teachers both for their own learning and for selecting videos for their later teaching. Therefore, this paper investigates the prior experiences and attitudes of student teachers in low and high semesters of study (N = 184) towards learning with explanatory videos as well as to the integration of teaching-learning videos into university teaching. Additionally, a qualitative analysis of criteria they cite for good explanatory and teaching-learning videos is given. Results show a high level of previous experience as well as positive attitudes towards both videos formats. These are more evident among students in lower semesters. Quality criteria are applied by students primarily on the surface structure. The results we obtained by using quantitative and qualitative data allowed us to deduce further research approaches and implications for higher education
Media Literacy – an Instruction Leaflet
In the following, the package insert of the media pedagogical concept of media competence is unfolded. This pharmaceutical analogy or metaphor aims to summarize the basic characteristics of this theoretical concept, starting from Dieter Baackes classic definition of it, in order to focus on the main and side effects. Overall, the contribution aims to put media literacy into a new perspective in view of the variety of definitions and contexts of use – and also in view of discussions of concepts such as media education (Medienbildung). The article also analyses basic media education assumptions and standards
