Operational Risk and Financial Performance of Banks in The Middle East and North Africa
This study examines the relationship between operational risk and financial performance of banks in the Middle East and North Africa
(MENA), utilising data from 135 banks spanning 14 countries from 2015 to 2019. The results show that operational risk negatively
affects banks’ financial performance in the MENA region. This study recommends that banks tailor and constantly improve their risk
management process to put operational risk management and control processes in place. The findings entail the importance of developing relevant frameworks and policies for prompt action in reporting and recording operational loss. Thus, banks’ management should formulate and implement appropriate procedures to ensure that timely information is obtained, especially regarding profit and loss, which will ultimately help boost the banks’ financial performance in the MENA region. This study is unique as it contributes to the existing body of knowledge by investigating the role of operational risk in determining banks’ financial performance in the MENA region
Soil Erosions at Housing Areas in Malaysia: A Planning Law Perspective
Many landslides occurring in housing areas in Malaysia have intrigued and shocked the Malaysian public. These disasters have caused massive damage to property and losses of life. It is a trite fact that, in Malaysia, soil problems have negatively impacted the residents' lives and property. The most significant soil problem disaster in Malaysia was the collapse of Highland Towers in 1993. This disaster caused pecuniary and non-pecuniary losses to the residents of the buildings. The question is, what can be learned so far from these land-related catastrophes? The main objective of this writing is to analyse the legal provisions in the planning law that have bearings on soil problems and soil erosions in housing areas. This writing aims to explore the weaknesses in the planning law and its implementation to provide preventive and curative legal measures against soil problems, soil erosions, and their consequences in housing development areas. This writing proposes a new perspective on planning legal ideas governing soil fitness in housing development areas. Qualitative social and legal research methodologies were used to study the facts and issues. The subjects of this research involve many housing development areas that face soil problems in Malaysia. It follows that the outcomes of this writing and the proposed legal reforms relating to planning law in housing areas that can be improved to face the soil problems and protect the rights of the house residents
Building A Framework for Election Education Among University Students
This paper presents a framework for educating university students on political issues during elections, with a specific focus on the impact of the Undi18 campaign. This campaign enables 18-year-olds to vote or contest in elections and has had a significant effect on the democratic landscape in Malaysia, as evidenced by its implementation during the PRU-15 election. The framework comprises two critical components: (1) evaluating university students’ perspectives on elections in Malaysia, and (2) measuring the extent of university students’ knowledge about political issues during elections. The framework has been developed by reviewing the current literature on election education and is intended to be adaptable for use in various educational contexts and by instructors from different fields. The aim is to enhance the level of political awareness and engagement among university students and to promote the strengthening of democratic processes
Understanding Lean Awareness Gaps between Management and Operations in an Aerospace Manufacturing Company in Malaysia
Lean planning is usually performed by the management team, while lean implementation by the operations team. Lean implementation can be more successful if the gap in lean between the management and operations teams are understood. By knowing the gaps, the right resources can be allocated to the right people doing the right things. This study aims to investigate the gap in lean awareness between both teams. The survey, via Google Form, took place in an aerospace manufacturing company in Malaysia. 360 valid responses received and analyzed with SPSS. Based on the findings, the management team was found to have more working experiences with higher qualifications compared to the operations team. Consistently, the findings have also found the management team has better awareness on lean terminologies, types of waste, and benefits of lean, followed by the technicians and operators, respectively. As a result, there was a clear gap in lean awareness between the management and operations teams. This gap might possibly be influenced by the level of qualifications, and number of experiences. Meanwhile, the findings within the operations team have shown the technicians' awareness on lean is better than the operators. This study implicates that a specific lean awareness program should be designed to suit different level of understanding on lean, for the right people with the right resources. With effective lean program, the implementation will be more successful, and firms can achieve better efficiency and waste reductio
Pelan Strategik Sekolah Keusahawanan Zakat Kedah (2023 – 2027) (S/O 21141)
A Hybrid Model of Contrast Enhancement with Particle Swarm Optimization for Diabetic Retinopathy (S/O 14404)
Identifying features of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) based on fundus image is currently conducted through eye exam by an ophthalmologist. Tracking DR progression manually is time consuming and error-prone. As the technology offered in Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0, namely Artificial Intelligence, is shown to reduce medical errors, this study proposes an image enhancement algorithm based on hybrid of Contrast Enhancement (CE) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The proposed method incorporate contrast adjustment on bright and dark region of LAB color space where the bright and dark region initially segmented using K-mean PSO. 100 retinal fundus images is used for training and testing purpose. The proposed method undergo qualitative and quantitative evaluation. Comparison with several method also conducted. The result indicates that performance of proposed method enhancement is more acceptable as compare to other resultant image. Further experiment is needed to handle the drawback occurred
