    Get PDF
Abstract Purpose – This comparative study sought to identify best practices concerning symbolic mathematical communication between primary school teachers and students in Japanese, Laotian, and Thai classrooms. Method – The target groups were 18 teachers and 671 students in Grade 1 to Grade 6 mathematics classrooms in Japan, Lao PDR, and Thailand. A total of 18 classrooms were inspected, one from each grade; thus, the unit of analysis was a classroom. Research instruments included a video recorder, a camera, and field notes. The data was gathered by videotaping, photographing, and taking notes. A descriptive analytics method was used to examine the data, following Pirie's mathematical communication framework (Pirie, 1998). Findings – Based on cultural norms and educational approaches in each country, the country-specific practices of symbolic communication were found to differ significantly among the mathematics teachers from the three countries. Owing to the education system in Japan placing a strong emphasis on discipline and respect, their teachers were found to focus on students’ symbolic explanations, particularly allowing students to elaborate on the meaning of complex mathematical ideas and concepts using symbolic communication. Laotian teachers tended to explain the answers using symbolic mathematical communication. This is because the country-specific practices in the Laotian local context concerning mathematical concepts are contextualized to relate to students’ daily lives and experiences, making abstract symbols more meaningful. Finally, Thai teachers were found to focus on the students’ answers rather than the learning process or operations. This suggests that Thai teachers often focus on memorising and repeating of mathematical procedures and formulas. Significance – The study findings offer a substantial understanding of the role of culture in education by investigating symbolic communication in mathematics classrooms in Japan, Laos, and Thailand. This implies the potential to improve teaching practices, enhance student learning experiences, and promote cultural sensitivity and inclusion in educational settings

    Get PDF
This paper aims to determine the factors affecting cost and profit efficiency of commercial banks in Turkey and to examine the ownership effect on cost and profit efficiency in an emerging market. Another aim of the study is to carry out the most recent and longitudinal (2006-2020) analysis of efficiency in the Turkish banking industry. This study uses an intermediation approach with data envelopment analysis (DEA) as its methodology. A total of 23 commercial banks were selected as the study sample and their quarterly data from 2006- 2020 was collected. In addition, an external two-stage DEA model with Tobit regression was applied to examine the determinants of cost and profit efficiency. The results show that Turkish banks currently work with relatively higher cost efficiency than profit efficiency. On the other hand, foreign banks display a lower cost and profit efficiency performance. The downward trend in profit efficiency in the Turkish banking system sends a warning signal on the health and stability of the banking sector. Multivariate Tobit regression analysis reveals how Total Assets, Deposit Share, Asset Growth, Time Deposits, NPL, and Ownership Structure significantly affect cost and profit efficiency. Ratio of liquid assets to total assets is positively correlated with the efficiency values, in contrast to results from previous studies. Previous studies have mostly been limited to scale and technical efficiency and focused on the cost efficiency of Turkish banks. In this study, the gap in the literature is filled by a comparative examination of the cost and profit efficiency at the scale of bank ownership. The study will look at and discussed these issues at the most stable period and the pre-pandemic period in the Turkish economy

    Get PDF
This study aims to investigate the dimensions of customer engagement (CE) in social media and what theories and methods are employed to scrutinize CE on social media. This study systematically used the literature review of 77 articles. Through Scopus-indexed academic databases, this study found and assessed peer-reviewed journal papers focused on social media and consumer engagement from 2018 to 2022. In this study, the current issues and research gaps for designing and developing future research are presented as well. This research analyzed the dimensions, theories, variables, methods, social media types, and previous business and spatial contexts. Most researchers illustrated CE as giving likes, comments, and shares on social media. Sixteen theories of the prior research were employed to investigate consumer engagement. This study positively impacts social media and consumer engagement by suggesting new insight for analyzing the related literature. They include modifying the CE in social media, reflecting the interaction between brand and customer phenomena, using other theories that exclude sixteen approaches that have been identified, and applying different methods such as experimental or mixed methods. Therefore, a comprehensive explanation of the consumer engagement framework on social media can be explained holistically by further studies

    Get PDF
This article discusses the need and the benefits of establishing an international commercial court in Saudi Arabia. Since Saudi Arabia’s legal system has been criticized regarding its openness to international investments, this issue is observed from the perspective of potential investors and business partners interested in doing business in Saudi Arabia. The aim is to determine how setting up a specialized international commercial court will improve the environment for investments and remove legal uncertainties that arise from the lack of such courts. Furthermore, a brief overview of the international rise of commercial courts worldwide will be provided, with comparative examples of the courts in Dubai and Singapore to reveal how those jurisdictions have adapted to the global economy and ensured their positions as regional leaders and investment hubs. The essential procedural rules will be highlighted to provide ideas and directions for Saudi Arabia. Finally, this article will discuss the challenges the Kingdom faces in the race to become the regional investment leader, and then provide some key takeaways. The objective of this article will be to explain how Saudi Arabia will overcome the challenges in establishing an international commercial court that will specialize in the application and interpretation of international commercial regulations, and why the setting up of an international commercial court will have a positive effect on the attraction of foreign investors to do business in the Kingdom. This will be achieved by examining and discussing Dubai and Singapore as comparative legal systems that have already established flexible dispute resolution forums which have been recognized worldwide

Reviewing The Indo-Pacific Policy of France: Can Gaullism Shine, and How?

    Get PDF
In the context of escalating global geopolitical concerns over the Indo Pacific region, France stands out among its European counterparts for being the earliest state to recognize the region’s significance. This distinction has prompted key research questions in the following three areas: the motivation behind France’s Indo-Pacific policy, whether France’s actions deviate from its Gaullist foreign policy tradition, and the potential effectiveness of these actions. To address these questions, this paper conducted a careful qualitative examination of France’s Indo-Pacific policy development and characteristics. The findings revealed that France’s Indo-Pacific policy is motivated by three key interests, namely security, economy, and leadership. This paper also found that France’s policy actions reflected both a continuation and modification of the Gaullist tradition, evident in President Macron’s mix of cooperation and skepticism toward the United States (US) and North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Concerning policy effectiveness, France’s status as a regional and middle power implies significant constraints in its physical capabilities, which hinder its ability to alleviate tension arising from the US–China competition, the dominant forces shaping the regional political-economic dynamics. Nevertheless, France’s expanding presence and enhanced soft power influence in the Indo-Pacific region have the potential to yield increased bargaining leverage in its interaction with the US and Chin

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigerian public universities has long championed the welfare and interests of academic staff. However, operational ineffciencies stemming from manual processes hinder its effectiveness in addressing contemporary challenges. This ineffciency hampers ASUU’s effectiveness and limits its ability to interact effciently with its members and stakeholders. Therefore, this study proposes that the ASUU Web-Based Information System (AWBIS) should modernize data management, communication, and decision-making within the union. Drawing on related work in online information systems across various sectors, the methodology involves requirements gathering, leading to the development and implementation of AWBIS Leveraging development technologies, AWBIS offers modules for member management, communication, event organization, and biometric attendance. This project uses the waterfall model approach to developing software as the research methodology. The data collection techniques include interviews and questionnaires. The AWBIS enables various operations to be performed online, consisting of registering members by the admin, logging members, and allowing members to manage their profles. The system also provides a login page for both members and admins, each with their own username and password. A secure and accessible database for storing member profles, academic information, and other relevant data was created. The successful implementation of AWBIS will signifcantly streamline ASUU’s operations, resulting in improved communication, reduced administrative burden, and enhanced transparency. Members will have access to up-to-date information, and the system will facilitate better coordination of ASUU’s activities. Future enhancements, including fnancial management, election processes, loan applications, and mobile app development, are suggested to further optimize AWBIS’s functionality and accessibility.
