The Role of High-Performance Work Practices and Affective Commitment in Promoting Knowledge Sharing Behavior in Higher Education Institutions

    Get PDF
Although high-performance work practices (HPWPs) are well-known for promoting desired attitudes and behaviors among organizational members, the current literature has overlooked measuring the impact of HPWPs on knowledge sharing behavior (KSB) in the academic setting. Thus, considering the research gap and the pivotal role of knowledge sharing practices in academic institutions, this study aims to explore the aforesaid relationship in the realm of higher education institutions (HEIs) from the perspective of social exchange theory. Moreover, the study aims to explore affective commitment (AC) as a connector between HPWPs and KSB. The study amassed data conveniently using a structured questionnaire from 255 private university teachers serving in Bangladesh. The sample size was relatively small owing to limited access and the considerable time constraints of the respondents. The outcomes of SEM-PLS analysis revealed five HPWPs (i.e., selective staffing, training, performance appraisal, compensation, and participation) as successful predictors of both AC and KSB. Moreover, AC mediated the link between these five HPWPs and KSB, meaning that AC plays an important role in explaining how HPWPs influence KSB. However, clear job description did not significantly predict KSB either directly or indirectly through AC. This study introduces fresh insights into the concept of high-performance work system showing how its individual practices shape the willingness of academics to share knowledge directly and via AC. The study’s findings imply that HEIs should incorporate HPWPs (e.g., attractive compensation, participative decision-making) into their people management systems to enhance faculty members’ organizational commitment and knowledge sharing practices, thereby achieving long-term success and sustainabilit

Corporate Strategic Response Towards Climate Change Mitigation: Insights from Interviews with Palm Oil Companies

    No full text
The increasing frequency of extreme weather events has prompted regulators, non-governmental organisations, academics and various other groups to take initiatives to address climate change issues. In line with these initiatives, a number of studies on corporate strategic responses toward climate change mitigation were conducted. Nevertheless, many of these prior studies tend to focus on large firms worldwide or firms in advanced countries. Thus, in this paper, we explore corporate strategic responses toward climate change mitigation by palm oil companies in Malaysia. Based on semi-structured interviews, the results show that there are various strategies to mitigate climate change adopted by the palm oil companies. These include the development of a comprehensive climate action plan with the oversight from the board of directors, and the setting up of carbon footprint monitoring system. Our results also suggest that the corporate strategic response of the Malaysian Palm oil companies examined align with the continuum-based model, as these companies continuously enhance their mitigation strategies over tim

Covid-19 and Capitalist Structure: Evaluating of Working-Class Inequality and Policy Effectiveness in Southeast Asia

    Get PDF
The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified global social inequalities and disrupted socio-economic stability, as recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO). This study uses Marxist and critical theoretical frameworks to analyze how the pandemic has exacerbated class struggles and socio-economic disparities, focusing on the working and lower-middle classes in Southeast Asia. Through case studies of Indonesia and Malaysia, the research evaluates national policy responses designed to protect these groups. Employing a descriptive and qualitative methodology, including analysis of official data and media discourse, the study highlights how the pandemic has amplified existing contradictions within capitalist systems, leading to increased job losses and widening labor market inequalities. Despite the introduction of economic stimulus packages, these measures often fail to address the underlying systemic issues of capitalism that perpetuate class exploitation and inequality. The paper critiques the capitalist framework for exacerbating the challenges faced by the working class during the pandemic, arguing that these policies offer only temporary relief without tackling the root causes of socio economic disparities. This analysis underscores the need for a more transformative approach to understanding and addressing capitalist dynamics in Southeast Asi

This study aims to examine the social takaful fund (STF) initiative, developed by Islamic Business School–Universiti Utara Malaysia (IBS–UUM) in collaboration with FWD Takaful Berhad in Malaysia, as a measure to address economic uncertainties and vulnerabilities by enhancing household well-being. It also analyses the potential impact of the STF on marginalised communities. Design/Methodology/Approach — This study employs a case study method to generate an in-depth understanding of the STF. A semi-structured in-depth interview was conducted with the manager of the STF, and the responses were transcribed and examined based on content and thematic analysis. Findings — The STF initiative is being applied for the benefit of the community in the state of Kedah in Malaysia before it can be extended to all other states in the country. It fosters inclusivity and resilience by pooling resources to provide a safety net for disadvantaged households. The model promotes collective responsibility and has the potential to enhance societal well-being and sustainable development. Utilising the fund for four main programmes (notably, community outreach, educational empowerment, the takaful lab, and takaful subsidy programmes), this initiative addresses economic uncertainties and vulnerabilities especially among the unserved and underserved communities through income improvement, empowering financial knowledge and takaful protectio
