The Impact of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Practices on the Financial Performance of Green Companies in Malaysia: An Empirical Analysis
This study examines the relationship between Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance and the financial performance of green companies in Malaysia. Analyzing 280 observations from 56 green companies listed in Bursa Malaysia from 2016 to 2020, the study employs rigorous regression analysis. The results indicate that ESG performance does not significantly influence the financial performance of these green companies. Instead, total sales and liability significantly impact both Return on Asset (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE). These findings suggest that, despite the growing emphasis on ESG in the business sphere, other internal factors may have a more substantial effect on financial outcomes. While ESG considerations may not directly financial performance, their importance for social welfare and sustainable resource management remains indisputabl
Subtitling Malay Taboo Language into English: The Case of The Assistant (2022)
Taboo refers to social and behavioural proscriptions which may instigate discomfort in society, both in language use and psychical behaviour. In audiovisual translation, the emphasis on taboo is often placed on its relative audience reception and the enforcement of relevant laws and regulations. Akin to the nature of audiovisual products, subtitling taboo references also warrants multimodal consideration, especially in relation to both verbal and nonverbal elements. This study, in particular, aims to probe into the taboo language of subtitling from Malay into English. The film The Assistant (2022), which was released on the online streaming platform Netflix, is selected as the corpus. To this end, a parallel corpus was developed and subsequently analysed using AntConc and AntPConc. Frequency, thematic and translation strategy patterns were mapped and descriptively analysed. In general terms, the analysis reveals that the taboo words in the source text are multifaceted, predominantly exclamatory, and markedly explicit. Many of the taboo loads are also found to be equally rendered into the target text, which corresponds to Netflix’s no-censorship policy. The study also learns the omission of some references in the translation, which can be partly linked to the technical and structural constraints of subtitlin
Factors Influencing Fast Food Consumption among Public University Students: A Case Study at Universiti Utara Malaysia
The prevalence of fast food consumption among students is on the rise. Although there is a growing study investigating consumption of fast food among adolescents and adults in Malaysia, little attention has been paid to university students. This is perhaps the first study to examine factors influencing fast food consumption within a sample of students in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). Primary data from a survey were used. An ordered logistic regression analysis was utilised to estimate the odds of consuming fast food. The explanatory variables consisted of demographic factors, peer influence, knowledge about fast food, lifestyle and mental health. Findings of the present study showed that most of the students in UUM consumed 1 to 2 times of fast food per week. Males tended to consume more fast food than females. Fast food consumption was lower among Chinese students than Malays, Indians and those of other ethnicities. Students who have excellent academic performance were less likely to consume fast food than those with poor academic performance. High personal income was associated with increased odds of consuming fast food. Students who were influenced by their peers were more likely to consume fast food compared to those who were not. Living a healthy lifestyle was associated with reduced odds of fast food consumption. These findings are important in the sense that they can assist UUM and government in developing more effective measures aimed at lowering students’ fast food intake. Intervention measures directed toward reducing fast food consumption among UUM students who are males, are Malays, have poor academic performance, have high income and adopt unhealthy lifestyles may yield promising outcome
Research on the Sustainable Development of Tourism in Hebei Province from the Perspective of Rural Revitalization
Evaluating and studying the sustainable development level of regional tourism under the strategy of rural revitalization is pivotal to achieving sustainable and high-quality regional economic development. This paper measures the sustainable development of tourism in Hebei Province from 2010 to 2020 by constructing a set of evaluation indicators. These consist of five secondary indicators—resource endowment, ecological support, social environment, infrastructure, and urban construction—and 18 tertiary indicators, using the entropy-TOPSIS method. The results show that the greening coverage index has the greatest influence on the sustainable development level of tourism in Hebei Province and is the most representative. From 2010 to 2014, the sustainable development level of tourism fluctuated and decreased, while from 2015 to 2020, it increased year by year. Additionally, a SWOT analysis is combined with corresponding countermeasures and suggestions. The aim is to improve the sustainable development of tourism in Hebei Province, support rural revitalization to seek common prosperity, and create a new growth pole for the comprehensive competitiveness of the regional econom
Valuing Indigenous Rights Over Forest Governance in Six Asean Member Countries
Indigenous forests and indigenous communities have always shared a deep emotional, spiritual, and practical bond. This paper aims to methodically examine the relationship between the level of rights held by indigenous people concerning indigenous forest governance and the ability of the indigenous community in ensuring the long-term viability of its ecosystems. Concurrently, in examining and discussing these issues it is hoped that it can also contribute to the survival of the indigenous people in the future. The elucidation of indigenous people’s rights in the context of indigenous forest governance is based on the empirical scrutiny of the study hypotheses, utilizing the Sikor et al. type of rights. A quantitative analysis through Somer analysis was also carried out on the comprehensive secondary data sets obtained from six selected ASEAN member countries. The findings show that the six selected ASEAN member countries have not yet been granted the third level of rights for indigenous peoples with regard to indigenous forest governance. The statistical evidence strongly suggests the urgent need in these countries to grant indigenous people rights over indigenous forest governance, both within a legal framework and in practical implementation, particularly at the definitional and allocative level of rights. The absence of such rights at the highest levels raises significant concerns about the sustainability of indigenous forests and the welfare of indigenous people across the observed ASEAN member countrie
Factors Contributing to Child Marriage Among Syrian Refugees in Domiz Camp-Kurdistan-Iraq
Child marriage is an internationally recognised human rights issue that has been extensively studied by various Non-Governmental Organisations and the United Nations. In response to this problem, many countries have implemented social policies aimed at addressing child marriage and several international treaties are dedicated to combatting it. This study focuses on examining the factors contributing to child marriage within refugee populations. The research methodology involved conducting in-depth interviews with ten young wives aged between 16 and 22, facilitating focus group discussions with their husbands and parents residing in Domiz Camps 1 and 2 in Kurdistan, as well as interviewing key informants who work in child protection services and social policy development. Thematic analysis was employed to identify prominent themes and subthemes based on the perspectives of participants. The research revealed that child marriage is driven by factors such as the need for safety, preservation of family honour, and economic challenges. Similar safety concerns were observed among Syrian refugees in this study, as well as in previous studies conducted on Jordanian refugees and Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. This study takes a comprehensive approach by considering perspectives from young wives, their parents, husbands, and key informants when examining factors related to child marriage. Ultimately, the findings of this study will contribute to a deeper understanding of refugee issues and efforts towards protecting children’s rights within the refugee contex
Turkish-Greek Relations: A Fragile Stability Between Neighbors on the Two Shores of the Aegean Sea
This article considers the nature of Turkish-Greek relations, focusing on the question of how these should be characterized. This is an important topic not only because there is a lack of a clear definition of the situation between the two countries in the literature, but also because providing a greater clarity of the issues about Turkish-Greek relations can assist in the long-term envisioning of a possible path that the two countries might take in the future. Employing a descriptive analysis, the article shows that a state of conflict rather than cooperation has determined the evolution of relations between Turkey and Greece. This sheds light on the intractable nature of the problems between the two countries, whether in Cyprus, the Aegean Sea, or the Eastern Mediterranean. The article concludes that Turkish-Greek relations are characterized by a historically grounded condition of fragile stability with permanent tension and possible crisis prevailing, even if conflicts are frozen and war is not foresee
