    Get PDF
Purpose –This study aims to explore the missing learning phenomenon due to school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic in preschool settings from teachers’ perspectives in Selangor, Malaysia. Related studies have shown that missing learning phenomena from different settings leads to delayed literacy development and raises the risk of dropping out among children. There is a lack of in-depth documentation on the missing learning phenomenon among preschoolers exploring the socioecology of preschool settings in a local context. Methodology –This research employed a case study approach. In-depth interviews were conducted with six preschool teachers from Selangor, Malaysia, using an inductive approach for a holistic understanding of the missing learning phenomenon during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data were analyzed using Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS), NVivo version 12 software, which mapped the findings to understand further the ecosystem behind the preschoolers’ absence of learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings – Three major themes were revealed from the data: the missing learning demographic, socioecological factors, and mitigation plans. Several sub-themes (the compensative learning solutions, the demographic of impacted people, the delayed progress, teachers’ readiness to facilitate online learning, engagement towards online learning, revised syllabus, personalized learning, and parental involvement) are classified under the respective major themes. Several main categories also emerged from the themes: lack of experiences and technology-pedagogical knowledge, unavailable online modules, low readiness to utilize online learning, unsupportive family climate, and accessibility. Learning intervention and online engagement with pupils during the pandemic are crucial in ensuring a successful continuous education. Significance – There is also a need for comprehensive remote instructional modules that consider socioecological actors – parents and home climate; in the future and the enhanced instructional technology competency among preschool teachers

    Get PDF
This study is conducted to validate the effectiveness of financial development in reducing poverty. The study adopted a Systematic Quantitative Assessment Technique and reviewed 91 financial development and poverty alleviation articles published between 2010–2022 to provide insight into the efficacy of financial development in reducing poverty and producing a blueprint for the government for possible adoption. The study also intends to know whether financial development successfully reduced poverty, highlight the evidence showing the success of financial development in reducing poverty, how financial development strategies were implemented to reduce poverty in other countries, and why financial development has been ineffective in reducing poverty. The reviewed articles revealed that financial development benefits the poor by increasing their access to various funding sources, thus improving well-being and reducing poverty. Similarly, it was revealed that lack of institutional quality and low financial penetration are the major reasons why financial development may not successfully reduce poverty. Thus, this study presented a FACI Blueprint to help the government effectively reduce poverty in countries where financial development is weak and unable to reduce poverty

Tax Enforcement Strategy: The Antidote to Non-Tax Compliance in North-West Nigeria

    Get PDF
Voluntary SME tax compliance has been of great interest to governments all over the world, given their unimpressive contribution to total tax revenue. This is even more so in Nigeria where the culture of tax compliance among SMEs can be described as poor, requiring innovative enforcement strategies. This study examined the extent to which tax enforcement strategies served as antidote to non-tax compliance in the North-West Nigeria. The study collected quantitative data from 345 randomly and purposively selected SMEs owners duly registered in North-west, Nigeria. The data was subjected to both descriptive and inferential analysis through techniques of central tendency and multiple regressions. Results revealed that three tax enforcement strategies: Use of tax clearance certificate (β=0.024 < 0.003), grant of tax amnesty (β=0.025< 0.020), and imposition of tax penalty (β = 0.013 < 0.014) have significant positive influence on degree of tax compliance among SMEs in the North-West Nigeria. Given the significant statistical evidence, this research inferred and concluded that deployment of both punitive (tax penalty) and persuasive measures (tax clearance certificate and tax amnesty) serve as antidote to non-tax compliance among the SMEs in the North-West, Nigeria. The study shows that tax compliance across informal sectors can be enhanced beyond the use of legal means. In essence, governments have the leverage of achieving increase in tax revenue in the informal sector through multiple strategies of motivation and punishment as implicitly emphasized in the theory of tax morale and deterrence theory

To What Extent the Declaration of a State of Emergency Is Consistent with the Palestinian Basic Law During the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Get PDF
The COVID-19 pandemic has raised consciousness across the globe of how constitutions respond to crises. This article examines the issue of the Palestinian President declaring a state of emergency in Palestine on March 5, 2020, under Presidential Decree No. 1 of 2020, to confront the spread of the Coronavirus. However, the President continues to extend the thirty-day state of emergency ten times. In addition, the article discusses a crucial issue associated with the extent to which the extended constitution of emergency in Palestine lasts, as the Basic Law only allows him to declare the state of emergency for a one-time limit. The article aims to clarify the constitutionality of the extension of the state of emergency in Palestine, in addition to placing some legal alternatives to avoid the President’s breach of the Basic Law. To achieve the objectives of the article, socio-legal research using a qualitative approach and face-to-face interviews was adopted. Accordingly, findings show the inconsistency of the extension of the state of emergency with the Basic Law due to the suspension of the role of the Legislative Council in Palestine. The article emphasizes and recommends that the role of the Legislative Council shall be activated to oversee the presidential decrees extending a state of emergency issued by holding the legislative elections in Palestine

    Get PDF
Over the past 12 years, the escalation of violence in conflicts arising from disputes over natural resource management rights between corporations and indigenous communities has become a growing concern across all regions of Indonesia. This abstract introduction highlights the urgent need to address the rising tensions and clashes associated with the competing claims to and utilization of natural resources in the country. Therefore, this study aimed to analyse the causes of violence and conflict resolution over natural resources using an empirical legal study with a socio-legal approach adopted through a case study in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. Informants for the study were selected using a snowball sampling technique, ensuring a diverse and representative range of perspectives. Secondary data was obtained through a literature study by tracing information from journals, books, and the internet, and data analysis was carried out qualitatively. Furthermore, an analysis was performed on the findings of other studies concerning instances of violence in conflicts related to forest and mining resources. This research found that (1). The violence occurred because the company did not respect the customary community’s natural resource control rights. (2). However, violence can be stopped through violence or mediation (3). Resolution of violence in conflict can only be done through mediation. The authors recommend that: (1). The practice of resolving violence in conflicts of rights over natural resources through mediation needs to be strengthened by the government to realize justice for all. (2). In indigenous communities, apart from state law, the legal landscape is still heavily influenced by customary law and religious law

Health and safety education among children is vital to their overall well-being and development. However, children need to understand health and safety so that they can apply it in their daily lives. In the digital age, modern educational institutions face the challenge of engaging a generation of students accustomed to interactive and visually stimulating content. Therefore, this study explores how the KiddieSafe App, an educational tool infused with game design elements, helps students in primary schools learn issues of safety and cleanliness more effectively. Drawing from the concepts of digital game-based learning and the development of 21st-century skills, the app features bright animations, interactive quizzes, and an interactive interface to help engage young learners. User evaluation using the focus group technique was conducted among Year One primary school children. The children were given sufficient time to explore the App and later they were asked to answer the questionnaire. The finding shows that the KiddieSafe App has the potential to enhance learning outcomes and increase students' engagement. The majority of feedback is positive, thus proving this application to have potential as an effective supplementary educational aid for children, which proves the importance of interactive learning in early childhood education. Future enhancements will focus on content diversity and feedback mechanisms to make the learning experience as enriching as possibl
