[English]: The university complex at Via Mezzocannone 8 has, over the centuries, been the center of the Neapolitan scientific community and a symbol of the city's culture. However, the places and people who made its history are known only to experts and some local event enthusiasts. This volume, the first in a series, covers the period from the second half of the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. It details the events of the Collegio Massimo dei Gesuiti, particularly the Cortile delle Statue, and highlights the contributions of teachers such as Pasquale Del Pezzo, Francesco De Sanctis, Paolo Panceri, Giosuè Sangiovanni, and Arcangelo and Eugenio Scacchi to the enrichment of the university's structures, including its libraries, museums, and laboratories

[English]: The volume studies the evolving attitude of the last rulers of Imperial China (the Manchu Qing) towards Chinese immigration into their motherland (Manchuria, roughly corresponding to today's northeast China). Based on in-depth analyses of demographic data, imperial decrees, legislative codes of the time, private accounts by travellers, and numerous other sources, the work investigates the complex and often changing policies with which the rulers sought to manage the social fabric of Manchuria. These policies deeply influenced the socio-institutional structure of the region. The study proposes an innovative interpretation, compared to previous research on the subject, suggesting that due to the changing orientations of different rulers and the needs of the central government, periods of greater or lesser openness and interdiction of the territory towards Chinese migrants alternated for about 150 years, which is more than a half of the duration of Manchu power over China. Furthermore, the work analyses the significant differences between the historical trajectories of southern Manchuria (present day Liaoning) and northern Manchuria (Jilin and Heilongjiang), two sub-regions that at the time were divided by a special structure, consisting of an embankment planted with willows, extending for about 1000 km: a “little wall”

A microstructural insight in polyethylene based bioriented mono-materials: from fundamental to processing

    Get PDF
The primary objective of this PhD project is to generate new knowledge on the structural transformations of polyethylene (PE) during biaxial stretching, focusing on the relationship between chain microstructure, crystallization behaviour, processing conditions and final properties of biaxially oriented PE (BOPE) films. This study aims to investigate how different PE grades, including HDPE, LLDPE and their blends, perform during the stretching process, aiming to optimize their use as mono-materials for next-generation packaging applications. The innovative aspects of the thesis lie in providing insights into the structural mechanisms at play during the biaxial orientation process, offering potential breakthroughs in expanding PE application as a sustainable alternative to multilayer films. The work is structured to build a systematic and interdisciplinary chain of knowledge, linking microstructural characteristics with processing conditions and the resulting properties of BOPE. To achieve this goal, three universities and three industrial partners have collaborated synergistically, under the coordination of the DPI. Indeed, the PhD project brings together the Soft Condensed Matter Lab from University of Naples Federico II (which this PhD candidate belongs to), the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials from University of Groningen for structure and properties investigation, and the Department of Industrial Engineering from University of Salerno for rheology and modeling part. The ex-situ comprehensive characterization of the selected PE grades is coupled with in-situ structural analysis performed using synchrotrons within EU facilities (ESRF in Grenoble, ALBA in Barcelona) with a new device for lab scale biaxial stretching suitably developed by the engineering group from Salerno. The commercial PE grades investigated have been supplied by Borealis, DOW and SABIC, which have been helpful in providing an industrial perspective during the development of the thesis. Chapter 2 is dedicated to the description of all the experimental procedures and techniques employed in this work. The starting basic characterization of the samples, presented in Chapter 3, includes microstructural analysis to check molecular mass and distribution, branch type and branching concentration and corresponding distribution. Tensile tests have been carried out on compression molded films of the samples for a mechanical characterization of the PE grades. In addition, the characterization of thermal properties, crystallization behaviour and thermal fractionation are illustrated. In Chapter 4 phenomena induced by temperature examined through the application of a thermal protocol are discussed. They have been investigated using DSC, coupling the results with structural (WAXS, SAXS) and morphological (POM, SEM) analysis. In Chapter 5, are reported the results achieved by performing in situ experiments aimed at gaining a better understanding of the phenomena induced by temperature and the thermal protocol adopted for ex-situ analysis in conditions emulating the stages preceding tentering. Further in-situ analysis aimed at understanding the complex structuring process that occur during biaxial stretching in the semi-solid state of cast sheets of selected grades produced at Karo Brukner facility, using the biaxial stretching device, are illustrated in Chapter 6. In situ experiments are performed by collecting 2D-WAXS and 2D-SAXS data while heating/cooling/stretching the PE samples. The results will be laid out in detail and discussed in depth in each Chapter, allowing for a comprehensive interpretation of the findings. In Chapter 7, the main conclusion of this work will be illustrated

[English]: Paul Ricoeur, in his philosophical itinerary throughout the 20th century, analysed the major ontological, moral and linguistic issues that animated the philosophical, social and political debate in Europe. In this investigation, the French philosopher has always been confronted with the philosophy of Spinoza, whom he saw as a philosopher of life and man in his complex and sometimes mysterious situation. This approach is central to the question of the phenomenological search for the meaning of being in the world and with others

[English]: The discussion on the subject of sustainable development at an international level, as is known, mainly develops within the United Nations. The debate on this topic is rooted at an international level, particularly within the United Nations, where, in September 2015, the General Assembly approved a new "Sustainable Development Agenda", to be implemented by 2030, with the identification of 17 objectives and 169 evaluation targets. In this context, the novel element is identified in the fact that the national instruments for implementing these objectives will no longer be evaluated with exclusive reference to the economic dimension of the development that they generate, but also to two other pillars: social inclusion and environmental protection. It is on these themes, in their many declinations, that the authors, with their different sensitivities and perspectives, have focused extensively

I protagonisti della politica. Notabili, elezioni e sistema politico in Campania (1861-1919)

    Get PDF
[English]: How did the ruling class of the Italian State relate to the problem of State-building and, more specifically, to the center-periphery relationship? What was the social and professional composition of this ruling class? Through which tools were the networks of relationships established that intersected the activity carried out by the parliamentarian in function of the requests coming from the civil society that had elected him? What was the role, in this context, of the notable? How was the political struggle organized in the liberal age? These are the questions at the basis of this research that aims to analyze them in a very specific geographical space, that of Campania. From the following pages emerges a collective biography of a ruling class composed mostly of notables determined to claim, by virtue of their mediating function between the State and civil society, a political role in the local sphere or a prestigious recognition as the final seal of an entire political career

Josephson currents in Superfluids and Supersolids

This PhD thesis, structured into five chapters, delves into the theoretical exploration of Josephson currents in ultracold quantum gases, with a particular focus on superfluids and supersolids. The initial chapter introduces the foundational concepts of ultracold quantum gases, including superfluidity and the dipolar interaction, leading to the formation of dipolar supersolids. The second chapter provides a theoretical framework for Josephson junctions, keeping an eye on the bosonic case, setting the stage for the other chapters which describe the results of two main projects. The first project investigates self-induced Josephson junctions in a dipolar supersolid, employing a 3D numerical simulation based on the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation (eGPE). This work predicts and observes Josephson oscillations and macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) in the supersolid system. It also provides a theoretical 2M-mode model which generalizes the standard two-mode model for bosonic Josephson junctions whose results align well with numerical simulations. Collaboration with the experimental group in Pisa led by prof. Modugno validates the theory, revealing Josephson frequencies and superfluid fraction measurements. The findings, emphasizing a sub-unity superfluid fraction, offer insights into novel phenomena and potential applications of Josephson junctions. The second project, in collaboration with another experimental group in Florence led by prof. Roati, explores the stability of supercurrent states in a Lithium molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) within an atomtronic ring. Through analytical studies and 3D numerical simulations, this research demonstrates that the increase of the number of Josephson junctions enhances the stability of superfluid currents, opening avenues for precise control in atomtronic circuits
