From sign to design: The role of domain transfer in redefining architecture locality

    No full text
This research examines the design process using conceptual frameworks based on domain transfer to suggest a new model for architecture based on local contexts. Plowrights conceptual framework is a way of developing new ideas, in which architecture may or may not be subverted with concepts that are significant; meanings may also be redefined with ‘big ideas’ (concepts), analogy, metaphor or significant questions from inside and outside the realms of architecture. This research utilizes case study method through design and reflects on the design process within the context of the West Java Cultural Center design competition. This analysis deconstructed and explained the design process using the conceptual framework, identifying unique representations of crosscultural and West Java culture as the basis for an architectural program. The case was used to understand the transformational architectural syntax occurring from local signs and symbols as evidence of innovation. The results of the case study fell within three areas: concepts as a way to achieve a place of innovation (hypothesis), transferring ideas based on locality into elements and syntax (transfer), and bringing them all together into a coherent design (coherence). Domain transfer was redefined in this case study as the translation of symbolic values and cultural attributes from non-architecture into architectural form and elements in pursuit of contextual design innovation

Patterns of Contextual Adaptation: Interiority as a Design Framework for Cafe Spaces

    No full text
This paper investigates interiority as an extension framework within adaptive multiplied pattern-based architectural design methodologies. While traditional pattern-based typological approaches are often regarded as repetitive applications of similar designs, a deeper understanding of interiority enables the reconceptualization of interior elements as adaptive pattern systems that respond to specific contextual needs, particularly in fast-moving commercial spaces. To explore this, the study employs a qualitative approach, analyzing six representative coffee shop designs in Indonesia, with a focus on Ejji Coffee shops. These case studies were selected due to their rapid proliferation and diverse spatial adaptations, offering valuable insights into the role of interiority in commercial architecture. The research methodology integrates parallel exploded drawing, visual cataloguing, and spatial element identification to delineate the interrelation between patterns, interiority, and thematic composition. Through four key elements with two-dimensional planes (thematic), three-dimensional furniture (objects), interior-exterior terrace composition (extension), and materiality (modules) with the study examines how interiority contributes to adaptive reuse and spatial efficiency. The findings reveal that thematic pattern-based interiority enhances flexibility, efficiency, sustainability, and aesthetic coherence, positioning interiority not merely as a spatial consideration for rapid commercial space design but as an integral design mechanism within the evolving landscape of commercial and retail architectural design

Metode Modified-Partial Capacity Design (M-PCD) dengan Kolom Elastis 30%: Studi Kasus Bangunan Beton Bertulang Persegi 6 Lantai

    No full text

Tenant satisfaction and property reputation of trade centers in Surabaya, Indonesia

    No full text
Purpose Trade centers are operationally run by a property manager as a delegate of the property owner. The dimensions of service quality (SERVQUAL), which include tangibles, assurance, empathy, reliability and responsiveness, are vital to be implemented as the duties of property managers when providing service to tenants to maintain tenant satisfaction and property reputation. This study aims to understand the effects of the SERVQUAL dimensions, the role of property management and the quality of rental value on tenant satisfaction and property reputation. Design/methodology/approach The sample was gathered using the purposive sampling technique with the criteria of being a tenant and kiosk owner in trade center properties in Surabaya. Data were gathered using questionnaires, from which 100 respondents were acquired. It was then analyzed using the partial least square structural equation model (SEM) in the SmartPLS 3.0 program to test the hypothesis. Findings The results of this study prove that the SERVQUAL dimensions assurance, empathy and responsiveness significantly influence tenant satisfaction with the mediating variable of the role of property management. Moreover, the SERVQUAL dimensions empathy, reliability and responsiveness significantly influence property reputation with the mediating variable of the role of property management. Practical implications Property managers are expected to proactively map out different service measures related to the dimension of satisfaction by conducting service training programs for their employees. In fact, in the post-pandemic period, property managers require new marketing strategies, such as leaseback, to effectively carry out renovations of the trade centers public facilities and restructure the tenant mix. Originality/value Trade centers as trading areas experience management limitations because of the prohibition of mass gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a limited number of onsite trading. Tenants who have entered into a long-term contract experience loss and rely on the aid of property management to survive. The role and quality of service of property management influence tenants satisfaction post-COVID-19 pandemic

    No full text
This study aims to investigate the influence of financial interest, sensation seeking (thrill & adventure, experience seeking, disinhibition, boredom susceptibility), and financial literacy on risk tolerance. Data was collected through an online questionnaire distributed via Google Forms to freelancers in the design and multimedia industry residing in Surabaya, who are also investors in the capital market, selected according to the purposive sampling technique criteria. The data collection process yielded responses from 100 participants and was processed using the Structural Equation Model-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS). The findings demonstrate that financial interest, sensation-seeking experience, sensation-seeking boredom susceptibility, and financial literacy significantly influence freelancers risk tolerance. However, sensation-seeking thrill & adventure and sensation-seeking disinhibition showed no significant influence on freelancers risk tolerance. Given the artistic focus of the design and multimedia sector, which contrast with the more analytical nature of finance, freelancers may experience unique sensations when making investment decisions in the capital market, thus impacting their risk tolerance. This study provides valuable insights for individuals considering investment, highlighting the importance of both financial knowledge and psychological condition and its impact on the financial sectors development
