Exploring Narrative Structure and Immersion in the Game OMORI: Unpredictability and Trauma as Guiding Principles

    Get PDF
This study analyzes the narrative structure of OMORI, a 2020 psychological horror RPG by Omocat, focusing on its portrayal of trauma through the protagonist Sunny. Incorporating Bal’s (2017) narratology and Wei’s (2011) narrative framework, this study examines techniques that contribute to unpredictability and trauma-driven narrative. Using Bermejo-Berros et al.’s (2022) narrative tension theory and Green and Brock’s (2000) transportation theory, the study reveals how each technique, respectively, incites immersive horror and emotional connection in players. Unpredictability can create immersive horror through narrative tension, whereas trauma-driven narrative may create an emotional connection by making the players sympathize with the character. Through its placement and presentation of sequences, the game evokes cognitive and emotional responses in players. The narrative structure in OMORI highlights the impact of unpredictability and trauma-driven narratives in game storytelling. Analyzing the game’s sequences and mechanics reveals their role in creating profound emotional experiences for players

An Improved Toxic Speech Detection on Multimodal Scam Confrontation Data Using LSTM-Based Deep Learning

    No full text
Toxic speech has gained substantial attention, focusing on its detrimental effects and prevalence across online platforms. This phenomenon often exhibits discernible patterns in pronunciation analogous to emotions such as happiness or anger. It has been relatively underexplored in prior studies, which predominantly addressed offensive language, hate speech, and sarcasm without considering their emotional properties. Social media platforms have emerged as spaces where individuals share personal encounters with toxic speech that impacts on their well-being. To address this challenge, our study introduces a novel approach that combines speech and text data within a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) framework. Unlike existing methods that primarily focus on text analysis, our approach uniquely integrates both speech and text, thereby enhancing the model’s ability to accurately detect toxic content. This multimodal data strategy is such an innovative step forward that it provides a more comprehensive solution to the problem of toxic speech detection. Our collected dataset comprises two-way conversations from online fraud reports and confrontations related to loan scams uploaded on YouTube, conducted in the Indonesian language. The absence of subtitles can emerge any ambiguity of homonyms, so it is required to transcribe the audio content to text. To do this, we used native speakers to make sure the transcription was correct in the Indonesian language of the toxic context. In addition, speech features, such as pitch, intensity, and speaking rate, were utilized alongside text features, including Bag-of-Words (BoW) and Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF). As a result, validation through F1-score measurement yielded 92.73% for text data and 89.09% for speech data. Our proposed approach provided a substantial improvement of approximately 12%-30% compared to the previous LSTM models. The performance comparison results confirmed that our proposed approach can enhance the accuracy of toxic speech detection

Post-harvest Soybean Meal Loss in Transportation: A Data Mining Case Study

    Get PDF
A poultry company in Indonesia has a problem, i.e., losing raw mate-rial, the so-called Soybean Meal (SBM), during transportation from the port to the factory. To reduce material loss, the company created a raw material transport (RMT) system, which recorded the time and activities during loading-unloading and transporting the material from the port to the factory warehouses. Therefore, this study aims to mine the data on the loss of raw materials through RMT. The application used is Orange data mining to find the relationship between lost material and other attributes, create clusters, and classify the standardized lost. The clustering exhibits two classes, namely, the standard and non-standard condi-tions. The classification process uses five different algorithms. The random forest algorithm was chosen because it produces the second-best AUC value and can produce a classification visualization through a decision tree. This classification process also produces rules based on the decision tree
