Design thinking: Visual guidance for quality inspection case study on cosmetic packaging company
The article discusses human error in quality inspection process at a cosmetic packaging company. Human error occurs because the visual guide of quality requirements designed by the inspector does not match the expectations and needs of the selectors as users. To improve the design of the visual guide to effectively reduce inspection errors, a design thinking approach is used. A user-centred design approach, designed jointly between users and designers, through five design stages, namely the empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test stages. The results of improving the visual guide are able to reduce inspection errors within selectors 8.3%, between selectors 36.25%, each selector vs standard 15.8%, and all selector vs standard 38.75%
Female Successors and Family Business Resilience; Multiple Case Studies on Family-Owned Retail Businesses
The study investigates the resilience of family-owned retail businesses led by female successors, focusing on business strategies to sustain and grow their ventures. The aim of this study is to understand how motivation, competence, and family support contribute to these strategies and, consequently to business resilience. Family businesses face unique challenges in adapting to rapid environmental changes. The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant disruptions, particularly for small, family-owned retail businesses in Indonesia, forcing them to rapidly adopt new technologies and business processes. This study specifically examines the role of female successors in family-owned retail businesses for the resilience of their business ventures. This focus is relatively underexplored in the existing literature, which often emphasizes male leadership in family businesses. This study employs a multiple case study approach, selecting four female successors of family-owned retail businesses in a small city in Indonesia. Data was collected through preliminary observations and semi-structured interviews to explore the successors motivations, competencies, and family support in crafting and implementing business strategies. The study found that the female successors effectively implemented renewal and growth strategies. Their high motivation, continuous learning, and strong family support were crucial in driving these strategies. The businesses not only survived but also expanded during and after the pandemic, demonstrating resilience through survival, growth, and continuity. Our findings highlight the critical role of female successors in the resilience of family businesses. Motivation to continue the family legacy, coupled with acquired competencies and robust family support, enables these successors to implement adaptive and growth-oriented strategies for the resilience of their family businesses
Experimental Study of Bond Strength of Embedded Steel Reinforcement in Vibration-Based 3D Printed Concrete Mortar
Many new construction techniques have been developed in recent years, one of them is Three-Dimensional Concrete Printing (3DCP). It offers many advantages such as reduced human error, minimum manpower usage, and shorter construction period. This technique, however, still needs to be studied further to ensure good quality of constructions. This experimental study aims to investigate the bond strength of embedded steel reinforcement in vibration-based 3DCP mortar. The parameters varied are reinforcement diameter and direction of printing. It is found that average bond stress decreases as reinforcement diameter increases. Furthermore, 3DCP specimens with bars placed parallel to the printing direction have relatively higher bond stresses as compared to the ones with bars placed perpendicularly. As compared to conventional cast specimens, 3DCP specimens have higher bond stresses which might be due to vibration-based 3DCP mortar. Moreover, building code formulas significantly underestimate the bond stresses of vibration-based 3DCP specimens tested in this study
Free-vibration and buckling analyses of beams using Kriging-based Timoshenko beam elements with the discrete shear gap technique
A family of locking-free Kriging-based Timoshenko beam elements with a new implementation of the discrete shear gap technique was recently developed (referred to as K-beam-DSG1 elements). Performance of the K-beam-DSG1 elements has been shown to be very satisfactory in the linear static analysis of beams for a wide variety of thicknesses. This paper presents further development of the K-beam-DSG1 elements to free vibration and bifurcation buckling analyses of prismatic and non-prismatic beams. Consistent Kriging-based mass matrices are used for free vibration analysis and similarly, consistent Kriging-based geometric stiffness matrices are used for buckling analysis. The results show that for most of the cases, the K-beam-DGS1 elements yield remarkably accurate natural frequencies and critical compressive loads using a reasonable number of elements to discretize the beam. For an axially functionally graded fixed-fixed supported beam, however, the elements fail to predict the critical load accurately
Pengaruh Spiritualitas Tempat Kerja Terhadap Kesejahteraan Mental Karyawan Melalui Kebahagiaan Dan Mindfulness Pada Karyawan
Background –The mental well-being of employees is crucial for both the individuals and the organizations they belong to. Employees who enjoy mental prosperity are often more productive, underscoring theimportance of fostering a supportive work environment.Aim –This study investigates the impact of workplace spirituality on the mental well-being of employees in Java, examining the roles of happiness at work and mindfulnessas intermediary factors.Design/ methodology/ approach –Employing a quantitative approach, this research engaged 352 respondents from various organizations across Java. Data collected were analyzed using SmartPLS 4.0 software, focusing on the relationships between workplace spirituality, happiness at work, mindfulness, and employee mental well-being.Findings –The study reveals that workplace spirituality significantly contributes to both happiness at work and mindfulness. Moreover, it directly influences employee mental well-being. However, while mindfulness serves as an effective mediator in this relationship, happiness at work does not significantly mediate the impact of workplace spirituality on mental well-being. This suggests that the pathway through which workplace spirituality affects employee mental well-being is primarily through mindfulness. Conclusion–Workplace spirituality emerges as a positive force, enhancing employee happiness and mindfulness, which in turn, contributes to better mental well-being. The study underscores the importance of mindfulness as a mediating factor, highlighting its role in leveraging spiritual values in the workplace to support employee mental health.Research Implication –The findings suggest that organizations should consider integrating mindfulness training and spiritual values into their employee development programs. Such initiatives can help mitigate stress, anxiety, and work-related pressures, fostering a healthier and more supportive work environment conducive to employee growth. Limitations –While this study identified happiness at work and mindfulness as potential mediators, the former did not significantly mediate the relationship between workplace spirituality and mental well-being. Future research might explore alternative mediating variables to fully understand the dynamics at play
