    Get PDF
Background of the study: Neighbourhood public libraries play a crucial role in supporting urban communities by providing spaces for reading, writing, social interaction, and creative activities. The Surabaya Municipality and Brisbane City Council (BCC) have adopted similar strategies in offering free public library services to enhance urban liveability and educational accessibility for all ages and abilities. BCC Libraries offers a wide range of programs such as reading initiatives, book talks, and Information Technology (IT) training. Surabayas library network comprises 1,449 service points, including two main public libraries and 533 micro-libraries (or known as Taman Bacaan Masyarakat/ TBM). However, the accessibility of some micro-libraries remains a challenge, particularly for people with disabilities (PWD) and older individuals, necessitating urban replanning efforts. The study used Google mapping techniques to analyse library distribution in Surabaya, comparing it with Brisbanes system. It assessed spatial relationships, accessibility, and service radii while conducting land use analysis to evaluate urban integration. The findings emphasised library distribution disparities, supporting replanning strategies to enhance accessibility and optimise government assets for improved services. Furthermore, a comprehensive design was executed, incorporating all those recommendations. Purpose: This study aims to assess the need for neighbourhood library relocation in Surabaya, taking inspiration from Brisbane City and other global examples. The research seeks to improve library accessibility and explore alternative strategies for underserved areas. Method: The study employed Google mapping techniques, land use analysis, and interviews with key stakeholders, including Surabayas library management and urban planning authorities. These methods were used to evaluate the feasibility of relocating libraries and identify potential solutions for improved accessibility. Findings: Preliminary results indicate that relocating existing libraries is not a viable option due to the limited availability of municipal assets that can be repurposed for accessible library spaces. However, the study suggests that collaboration with private and community-owned libraries could provide an effective alternative to serve areas with limited access to public libraries. Conclusion: A new library facility has been proposed for the western area of Surabaya, integrating open space with an innovative semi-outdoor library concept. This design includes additional health mitigation measures to reduce the potential spread of COVID-19. If accepted by the Surabaya Municipality, this initiative could serve as a model for enhancing library accessibility while fostering community engagement

    Get PDF
Flexible working arrangement (FWA) is increasingly being implemented to improve operational efficiency and employee welfare. Technological advances support the implementation of FWA, but challenges in human resource management remain. Work-life balance is a key factor that influences employee performance in a flexible work system. The study analyzed the relationship between flexible working arrangements, work-life balance, and employee performance to better understand the mechanisms underlying this relationship. This study used purposive sampling with 305 respondents. Data were gathered by means of Google Form and analyzed using the SEM-PLS method. Flexible work arrangements have a positive but insignificant direct impact on employee performance. However, FWA significantly has positive impact on work-life balance, which in turn improves employee performance and enacts as a mediator in the correlation. This study found that FWA improves employee performance through work-life balance as a mediator. The implications of the study encourage the effective implementation of FWA, with recommendations for further research on demographic factors and industry sectors

The Implementation of the Biophilic Architecture in the Design of the Office and Automotive Centers in Surabaya

    Get PDF
Urban buildings often prioritize economic value over green spaces, leading to a disconnection from nature that negatively affects occupants mental well-being and productivity. To address this issue, this study explores how biophilic design can be integrated into office and automotive centers to promote environmental sustainability and enhance user well-being in Surabaya. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive method within a research-through-design framework, combining site observations, literature and precedent reviews, and digital modelling to develop a biophilic design based on the core principles of biophilic architecture: direct experience with nature, indirect experience with nature, and the experience of space and place. Among these, direct interaction with nature plays the most significant role, demonstrated through rooftop gardens, sensory therapeutic areas, urban farming zones, and vegetated breakout spaces. These features not only enhance aesthetic and recreational quality but also support passive environmental control strategies, such as natural lighting, ventilation, and thermal regulation. Indirect experiences are achieved through the buildings organic form and facade elements such as tree-shaped columns and low-emissivity glass that allow daylight while reducing solar heat gain. The spatial configuration reflects the experience of place through transitional zones and stepped gardens that foster movement, interaction, and connection with the outdoor environment. While the building involves daylighting and natural ventilation, further performance evaluations are needed to ensure the design meets sustainability goals in terms of energy use, water efficiency, and material performance

Food waste has become a concern in solid waste management due to its high bulk volume and production rate. Without good management, food waste piling may result in foul odor, global warming by methane emission and even an epidemic. Composting is a method usually employed to process food waste. However, this method often took a long period and selective to organic waste such as leafy materials or fruit waste. Bone is a food waste that is rich in phosphorus, a chemical substance that is required to make various useful products such as fertilizer, battery, detergent, etc. This study investigates the characteristics of food waste compost containing chicken bone and various domestic organic food waste that was processed through aerobic solid-state fermentation using Aspergillus niger. The composting process was monitored over a 28-day period at 28C. The resulting compost was characterized under various physicochemical parameters, including pH and nutrient composition. The findings demonstrated that Aspergillus niger effectively released phosphorus from bone while degraded organic matter in just a week, resulting in significant reductions in unprocessed waste volume and the production of a stable, nutrient-rich compost in a short time. Additionally, the compost was successfully induced better growth on corn seed compared to the food waste pile and naturally composted food waste. These results suggest that Aspergillus niger-mediated aerobic solid-state fermentation is a viable and efficient method for converting food waste into high-quality compost, promoting sustainable waste management and agricultural practices

From sign to design: The role of domain transfer in redefining architecture locality

    No full text
This research examines the design process using conceptual frameworks based on domain transfer to suggest a new model for architecture based on local contexts. Plowrights conceptual framework is a way of developing new ideas, in which architecture may or may not be subverted with concepts that are significant; meanings may also be redefined with ‘big ideas’ (concepts), analogy, metaphor or significant questions from inside and outside the realms of architecture. This research utilizes case study method through design and reflects on the design process within the context of the West Java Cultural Center design competition. This analysis deconstructed and explained the design process using the conceptual framework, identifying unique representations of crosscultural and West Java culture as the basis for an architectural program. The case was used to understand the transformational architectural syntax occurring from local signs and symbols as evidence of innovation. The results of the case study fell within three areas: concepts as a way to achieve a place of innovation (hypothesis), transferring ideas based on locality into elements and syntax (transfer), and bringing them all together into a coherent design (coherence). Domain transfer was redefined in this case study as the translation of symbolic values and cultural attributes from non-architecture into architectural form and elements in pursuit of contextual design innovation
