The Substance of Indonesian Women Directors in Creating Value

    Get PDF
This paper aims to provide insight into the impact of the existence of female directors in the board of directors on firm value by taking into consideration the educational level and tenure of women directors in the governance of Indonesia’s companies. The hypotheses are tested on 177 Indonesian listed companies in the IDX between 2015-2020, manufacturing and retail industries, using the weighted least squares regressions. The evidence conveys that the educational level rather than the simple presence of women directors can increase firm value. Additionally, results reveal that the tenure of women is negatively related to firm value, as it might impair the boards independence. This study explores the potential of women on board through their educational level and tenure in the firms. Future studies may expand to include factors such as family background, reputation, and other personal or professional elements that can enhance womens performance in companies. Few studies have addressed the impact of women across different industries, especially in developing economies. This research contributes by examining the demographic variables of women board members that are still poorly apprehended (i.e. their educational level and tenure) in such a setting

Assessing the potential of small wind turbine electricity generation for small-sized hotels towards sustainable tourism in developing countries

The persistent reliance on fossil fuels for energy will yield enduring adverse effects on the tourism sector, particularly the hotel industry. Wind energy represents a renewable electricity source that can facilitate the transition of small-scale hotels to clean energy. The main objective of this research is to propose a methodology for evaluating the potential of wind energy to support sustainable tourism in developing nations, specifically in fulfilling the electricity requirements of small hotels. This study aims to assess and compare the potential contribution of small wind turbines to hotel energy demand by modelling a historical hourly wind dataset spanning ten years (2011-2020) and forecasting a portion of the dataset. This research selected three sites in Indonesia exhibiting varying wind energy potentials: Tepus District in Gunung Kidul Regency, Losari Beach in Makassar City, and Nusa Penida Island in Bali. This study utilises multiple linear regression to examine the impact of external variables on wind speed, and it applies Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) and Holt-Winters Exponential Smoothing (HWES) for wind speed forecasting in these three locations. The hourly and daily interval datasets analysis reveals a weak correlation between external factors and wind speed, with the HWES method identified as the most appropriate approach for modelling and forecasting wind speed, surpassing the SARIMA model by 0.309 RMSE. Forecasting results indicate that a 30-kW wind turbine could supply 8.8 - 35.3% of a small hotels electricity consumption, depending upon the occupancy rate

GOOGLE EARTH INTEGRATION IN LEARNING: A NARRATIVE REVIEW

    No full text
Technology integration in education is increasingly developing, including the use of Google Earth as an interactive learning medium. However, its utilization in Indonesia is still limited due to the lack of teacher training and access to technology. This research is intended to analyze the trend of Google Earth usage in learning through narrative review method. The study reviewed related literature to identify the fields of study that use it the most, the research methods applied, and the benefits and challenges found. The results show that Google Earth improves learning motivation, student engagement and spatial understanding. However, research is still dominated by short-term experimental methods, so longitudinal studies are needed to measure its impact in the long term. The implications of this research highlight the need for teacher training, supporting policy development, and further exploration in STEM and vocational education

Christian Leadership Education for Youth through Social Organizational Communication Styles Based on Banyuwangis Local Culture in the Post-Pandemic

    No full text
This study explored Christian leadership education for youth through organizational communication styles within a social institution, specifically, a church-based youth organization in Banyuwangi, Indonesia. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted social interactions, leading to a significant decline in youth participation. However, post-pandemic observations revealed a notable increase in engagement among the youth members of GKT (Gereja Kristen Tuhan) Banyuwangi. This shift raised important questions about the role of leadership communication in revitalizing youth involvement. This study used a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participant observation, interviews with four informants, and document analysis. The findings suggested that the youth leader employed varied communication styles depending on his social role within the organization. As a leader, he utilized controlling, structuring, and relinquishing styles; as a coach, he adopted a more directive approach; and as a teacher and peer, he favored an egalitarian style. These communication strategies, shaped by Christian values and local cultural norms of Banyuwangi, played a significant role in fostering motivation and participation among youth members

From sign to design: The role of domain transfer in redefining architecture locality

This research examines the design process using conceptual frameworks based on domain transfer to suggest a new model for architecture based on local contexts. Plowrights conceptual framework is a way of developing new ideas, in which architecture may or may not be subverted with concepts that are significant; meanings may also be redefined with ‘big ideas’ (concepts), analogy, metaphor or significant questions from inside and outside the realms of architecture. This research utilizes case study method through design and reflects on the design process within the context of the West Java Cultural Center design competition. This analysis deconstructed and explained the design process using the conceptual framework, identifying unique representations of crosscultural and West Java culture as the basis for an architectural program. The case was used to understand the transformational architectural syntax occurring from local signs and symbols as evidence of innovation. The results of the case study fell within three areas: concepts as a way to achieve a place of innovation (hypothesis), transferring ideas based on locality into elements and syntax (transfer), and bringing them all together into a coherent design (coherence). Domain transfer was redefined in this case study as the translation of symbolic values and cultural attributes from non-architecture into architectural form and elements in pursuit of contextual design innovation
