Forecasting the E³CI and food inflation under evidence of non-linear interactions between extreme weather events and prices

This thesis investigates the non-linear relationship between extreme climate events, measured by the European Extreme Events Climate Index (E³CI), and unprocessed food prices, captured by the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP). The motivation for this research consists in two main considerations: climate change is intensifying extreme events, and fresh food prices are highly exposed due to their reliance on agricultural supply. The analysis proceeds in three main steps. First, a Smooth Transition Autoregressive model is applied to Slovenia, replicating the Bank of Slovenia’s study, and then extended to Italy to test robustness across countries. Second, the forecastability of the E³CI is investigated with a variety of machine learning and deep learning models in order to evaluate the predictive potential of climate indicators. Third, given the challenges in accurately forecasting the index itself, the observed E³CI is incorporated into inflation models together with farm-gate prices and macroeconomic drivers, using both econometric and machine-learning approaches. Overall, the forecasting analysis revealed significant limitations. The E³CI tracks extreme and rare events, whose intrinsic unpredictability makes accurate prediction extremely challenging, underscoring the persistent difficulty of forecasting extremes. At the same time, food price inflation reflects multiple supply and demand shocks, rigidities, and external drivers, adding further complexity. Within this framework, forecasting serves to test the central non-linear hypothesis: to what extent climate-induced price dynamics — state-dependent, varying across regimes, and potentially disproportionate — can be captured by econometric and machine-learning models. The findings from both forecasting exercises indicate that even advanced models capture these dynamics only partially, and sometimes fail to capture them at all

Upgrade of the SND@LHC muon detectors with drift tubes

The Scattering and Neutrino Detector (SND@LHC) experiment at CERN can discriminate all neutrino flavors in a previously unexplored energy region. The signal events are interactions of neutrinos with energies between 100 GeV and 1 TeV, produced in the very forward direction from LHC pp collisions in the ATLAS interaction point. Precise muon tracking in SND@LHC is important for a correct measurement of the muon flux, crucial for both the detector operation and the estimate of background in neutrino physics analysis, and for searches of rare events with muons in the final state, such as muon trident production or the dark Higgs dimuon decay. To improve muon identification, in March 2025 two Mini Drift Tubes (MiniDT) modules, miniature versions of CMS Drift Tubes, were added to the SND@LHC muon identification system to provide additional high resolution x-y position and direction measurements. This thesis presents the integration of MiniDTs in the SND@LHC detector, DAQ and control systems, together with the developments of the offline software and results on their commissioning up to September 2025. The MiniDT installed reached a hit efficiency of approximately 97%, in agreement with the performance reported by CMS DT Detector Performance Group. In addition, the MiniDTs were also integrated into the SND@LHC offline software framework, sndsw, allowing common SND@LHC–MiniDT events to be built offline, while a preliminary tracking method based on the Hough Transform is under development to enable the standalone reconstruction of MiniDT tracks

    No full text

    Series expansions for scattering amplitudes

This thesis investigates series expansion techniques for Feynman integrals and scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory. These integrals are reduced to linear combinations of an independent set of master integrals, via Integration By Parts identities. The master integrals, in turn, obey systems of differential equations, whose solution provides an efficient method for their evaluation. We focus on solving the differential equations using an iterative approach in the dimensional regulator, combined with a series expansion in the relevant kinematic scales. To improve convergence, we study and systematically develop Bernoulli-like variable changes, which map nearby singularities to infinity. Starting from one-scale problems, we analyze their effectiveness and limitations, identifying some of their key features. We then propose an extension of the method to multi-scale problems by introducing multiple Bernoulli-like variables. Applied to two-loop amplitudes for Higgs and Z decays into three gluons, this approach significantly reduces the number of required terms for accurate results. We also test it on a two-scale elliptic Feynman integral (the sunrise with two equal masses and a different mass), finding moderate improvements despite the complicated singularity geometry. Our results show that Bernoulli-like transformations provide a general and efficient tool for accelerating series solutions, with potential applications to high-loop, multi-scale calculations where analytic methods are intractable

Integrated photoelectrochemical-photovoltaic system with a dichroic spectral splitting for solar hydrogen production

    No full text
The transition to sustainable energy requires efficient methods to convert solar energy into storable fuels. Photoelectrochemical (PEC)water splitting produces hydrogen from sunlight; however, it requires an external bias to proceed. A practical solution is the integration of PEC with photovoltaic (PV) cells in tandem systems, where the PV provides the necessary bias. This thesis investigates a PEC–PV tandem system assisted by a dichroic filter. The filter splits the solar spectrum: short-wavelength light is transmitted to the PEC cell, while long-wavelength light is reflected to the PV cell. This approach enables more efficient spectral use than stacked tandem devices, mitigating current mismatch and coupling losses. The dichroic filter was experimentally characterized, revealing deviations from ideal high-pass behavior. Mo:BiVO4 photoanodes were characterized by XRD and photoelectrochemical measurements. A commercial silicon PV cell was used and characterized. Photocurrents were measured under AM 1.5G illumination and compared with values calculated from IPCE data. Simulations evaluated configurations with idealized and optimized components, varying PV cell numbers, and different filter cutoff wavelengths. Moreover, the analysis quantifies how non-idealities of the dichroic filter reduce performance, and howoptimized cutoffs and improved photoanodes enhance the overall efficiencies. The results demonstrate that an optimized PEC-PV tandem system with dichroic splitting integration achieves a total efficiency that could overcome the efficiency of the PV component alone, all while simultaneously producing hydrogen. This represents a more efficient system than using separate components, where the PV cell powers a commercial electrolyser. Overall, this work highlights optical spectrum management as a key strategy for advancing PEC–PV systems and scalable solar hydrogen technologies

Diagrammatic Monte Carlo for the Froehlich polaron in materials with anisotropic non-degenerate band extrema non-degenerate band extrema

    Get PDF
The polaron is a quasiparticle made of an electron and a cloud of phonons coupled to it through the electron-phonon interaction. This quasiparticle state is common at the bottom of the conduction band or at the top of the valence band (hole polaron) in ionic semiconductors and insulators such as III-V compounds (GaAs, GaP, AlAs) and oxides (BaO, CaO). In this thesis we will be focusing on the large polaron model, also known as the Froehlich polaron, which assumes that the material can be modelled as a dielectric continuum. The main features of the Froehlich model will be discussed, including also a generalization for our more complex case, and then the Many Body formalism will be explained together with the main aspects of the Monte Carlo method (introducing also Markov chains), in order to provide the theoretical basis for the Diagrammatic Monte Carlo method applied to the large polaron. The simulations performed using Diagrammatic Monte Carlo were used to compute the ground state energy and polaron effective masses in the specific case of the conduction band of a range of cubic materials (AlAs, AlP, GaN, GaP, SiC, ZnSe) with parameters found using ab-initio methods. The materials simulated had both isotropic and anisotropic conduction bands, a significant difference with respect to previously performed Diagrammatic Monte Carlo simulations, which were all based on an isotropic model for the electron band. The results obtained are in agreement with previously computed values found in literature using different numerical methods and the obtained model can be used as a starting point for more complex simulations

    No full text
