Benchmarking national carbon management strategies: a six‑dimensional comparative analysis related to carbon capture, utilization and storage

    Get PDF
The accelerating climate crisis induces effective national carbon management. This paper compares the carbon management and CCU/S strategies of the United States, Canada, Sweden, France, and Austria using a six‑dimensional framework – political‑legal, economic, organizational, technological, ecological, and social aspects. Present study maps each strategy’s design choices, deployment pathways, and governance mechanisms, finding common emphasis on hard‑to‑abate sectors and multi‑stakeholder oversight but wide variation in regulatory maturity, incentive structures, and community engagement. Results show that technological readiness must be paired with clear legal frameworks, aligned financing, and inclusive stakeholder processes to enable the deployment of CCUS. These insights guide policymakers toward best practices and identify key areas for future implementation research

New challenges of the environmental criminal law of the European Union

    Get PDF
In 2024, the European Parliament and the Council adopted Directive (EU) 2024/1203 on the protection of the environment through criminal law which determines minimum rules with regard to the definition of criminal offences and penalties in order to protect the environment more effectively. The new directive contains more detailed and severe regulation both in connection with the punishable conducts and the sanctions applicable to national and legal persons. The member states have to implement the provisions of the directive into their national legal systems by 21 May 2026. The paper aims to present the most important challenges posed by the new environmental directive of the European Union and tries to answer the question whether the Hungarian criminal law needs to be modified with regard to the new EU requirements

AI-Based geospatial intelligence for illegal waste detection in the European Union: opportunities and legal considerations under the AI act and data protection laws

    Get PDF
Illegal waste disposal remains a persistent environmental and legal challenge in the EU, contributing significantly to pollution and climate change. This article explores the potential of AIbased geospatial intelligence, such as UAV-assisted aerial monitoring, to support the detection and inspection of illegal landfills by LEAs. The research aims to assess both the opportunities and the legal implications of such technologies. The study combines legal analysis with a case study of the EU-funded PERIVALLON project. The paper identifies and discusses the relevant EU legal frameworks in the fields of AI governance and personal data protection. It concludes that while AIdriven geospatial tools offer substantial potential for environmental law enforcement, their deployment must be carefully aligned with EU legal standards to ensure compliance

Half a century apart, two French films can be compared on the basis of their narrative argument, which consists in describing the rebellion of young women against forms of authority. Le Bal des folles (2021), by Mélanie Laurent, shows how a young bourgeois wanting to emancipate herself is locked in the Salpêtrière hospital by her own father. She is saved from Charcot’s asylum by a nurse, who gradually takes care of her. This film, characteristic of contemporary feminist claims, can be compared to Mais ne nous délivrez pas du mal, by Joël Séria (1971). It follows two teenage girls who commit increasingly illicit and dangerous acts in the name of Satan, until they commit suicide when they risk being imprisoned for murder. The consideration of the cultural and production context of these films, of their narrative processes and of their spectatorial reception make it possible to analyze their different empathetic strategies
