    Designschutz im Metaverse

    Metaversen sind virtuelle oder unsere Realität virtuell erweiternde, 3-dimensionale, immersive und persistente digitale Erlebnisumgebungen. Nutzer können in ihnen mittels virtueller Personalitäten wie Avataren synchron und auch untereinander in Echtzeit agieren. Für Branchen wie Fashion, Entertainment, Gaming und Education aber auch für die industrielle Entwicklung gewinnen Metaversen wegen ihrer technischen und wirtschaftlichen Potenziale derzeit enorm an Bedeutung. Die rasante Entwicklung führt aktuell zu einer Vielzahl rechtlicher Herausforderungen. Die vorliegende Ausarbeitung behandelt designrechtliche Probleme im Spannungsfeld der Fragen, wie das Designrecht der Europäischen Union auf die neuen Sachverhalte anzuwenden ist und inwiefern bestehende Rechtsvorschriften änderungsbedürftig sind. Es wird insbesondere dafür argumentiert, dass Designs, die der Öffentlichkeit an virtuellen Objekten im Metaverse zugänglich gemacht werden, bereits auf Basis des geltenden europäischen Designrechts schutzfähig sind. Eingehend erörtert wird ferner die Möglichkeit von Designverletzungen sowohl innerhalb eines Metaverse als auch durch Benutzung virtueller, digitaler Designs einerseits und entsprechender Designs an Erzeugnissen unserer realen, analogen Welt andererseits. Einbezogen werden hierbei Prozesse der Digitalisierung und dimensional conversion im Zuge von Gestaltungsübertragungen, der Analogisierung bspw. durch 3D-Druck sowie der Designgenerierung durch Künstliche Intelligenz

    Managing Energy Flexibility in Operational Production Planning: A Multi-Criteria Optimization-Based Analysis

    The energy and sustainability transition in Germany is putting increasing pressure on industrial companies to improve their energy footprint. One example is the reduction of electricity consumption in production. However, other electricity-related pressures, such as electricity costs, are also forcing companies to take such aspects into account. When such criteria are considerd as simultaneous performance criteria in planning processes, significant interactions between the criteria can be identified and analysed using multi-criteria optimisation methods. Four articles published as part of this thesis analyse different aspects of energy flexibility in the production context. The existence of general interactions between electricity consumption, electricity-related emissions and electricity costs under dynamic electricity price tariffs shows that electricity costs in particular cannot be considered as a purely environmental criterion, as is often claimed in the literature (Article 1). Such interactions become even more intense when a battery storage system complements the production context. However, this only applies to dynamic electricity price tariffs and not to fixed-price green electricity contracts (Article 2). With the knowledge of such interactions between electricity-related criteria, incentive-based instruments can be formulated to react macro- and micro-economically to energy crises - such as the gas crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine in 2022. This leads to the concept of gas-to-power demand response (Article 3). A measurement tool for decision-making in a multi-criteria production context requires, in particular, economic and ecological interpretability. An example of this is the analysis of the replacement of production machinery. The center of gravity indicator developed can be used for this purpose (Article 4)

    The Metaverse and virtual worlds are a growing market. The seamless integra- tion of such worlds is an important but huge challenge. Transferring avatars, contextual, interaction, or transactional information is mandatory for modern applications in virtual worlds. Teleporting users from one world to another includ- ing their properties is important for many business cases and helps virtual worlds to extend their services as well as to focus on their own business models. To provide such integration and interoperability of virtual worlds, a standard archi- tecture and protocol is required. In this paper, we introduce the Hyperworld Transfer Protocol as a proposed standard for the seamless integration of virtual worlds and show, how it can be employed in real-world scenarios

    Transforming the Information Technology Function: Essays on the Role of Distinct Organizational Capabilities

    This dissertation examines the impact of digital transformation on organizations, particularly on the Information Technology (IT) function in organizations, as they grapple with the need to adapt to the rapid pace of change. Drawing on the resource-based view of the firm and the literature on organizational ambidexterity, it highlights the central role of organizational capabilities in successful digital transformation. Specifically, the research focuses on organizational design capabilities, leadership capabilities, and human resource capabilities. In doing so, it addresses the unique challenges IT organizations face, including talent shortages and the need for bimodal structures to balance exploration and exploitation. Through theoretical and practical insights, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of digital transformation within IT organizations, offering guidance on organizational design, leadership, and human resources capabilities to facilitate successful adaptation in today's dynamic digital landscape. This cumulative dissertation comprises seven essays that address the various research questions. An overview of the research completed as part of this dissertation is provided in this introductory essay. It includes the motivation, the conceptual and theoretical foundations, and the research questions. It also outlines the structure of the dissertation and provides an overview of the methodological approaches based on the seven independent essays. The dissertation concludes with theoretical and practical implications, limitations, and suggestions for further research

    Wissensgraphen in der kompetenzorientierten Lehre

    There are ongoing shifts in various domains, including higher education, towards a broader application of educational and instructional design technologies, with a focus on competencies and skills rather than the conveyance of abstract facts. This results in an urgent need to support and improve these developments, inter alia due to the increasing application of online learning, a shortage of skilled experts in an aging society, and changing internationalized labor markets. In this thesis, a Knowledge Graph for Competency-Based Education (KG4CBE) is explored. KGs offer a promising approach to represent complex educational relationships in a flexible and interconnected manner. The objective is to semi-automatically construct a KG that accurately represents and interlinks educational concepts, learning resources, and ontologies for skills, competencies, and covered topics. It also aims to integrate the Four Component Instructional Design (4C/ID) model, intended to develop training programs that foster the acquisition of a wide range of complex competencies that require the integration of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Therefore, two primary challenges are researched: formalizing the 4C/ID model into an ontology for integration into a KG, and developing a semi-automatic implementation framework for constructing educational KGs from instructional materials. The ontology for the 4C/ID model is constructed by following a structured process. It is implemented using the open-source software Protégé and subsequently integrated into the KG. The final evaluation of this research objective is accomplished through the prototypical application of the ontology to specific teaching content designed according to the 4C/ID model and through its linkage with the developed KG. For the construction routines of the KG, a thorough literature review is conducted, exploring the intricacies of KGs with a focus on their application in the educational domain. The construction process is designed according to established literature and involves the integration of current technologies, such as Natural Language Processing, Named Entity Recognition, statistical and machine learning models, as well as transformer and large language models. The integration of external knowledge sources, such as Wikidata, the ESCO ontology of skills, and the revised Bloom’s taxonomy, enable promising applications. The resulting routines and extracted KG are evaluated carefully according to the scope of this thesis. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that representing 4C/ID principles within a KG by an custom ontology and that the semi-automatic construction of a KG for educational content are feasible. Although limitations and suggestions for future research are identified, the presented results provide a solid foundation for further exploration of KG4CBE
