Remarks on the Local Structure of Basic Morita Equivalences I
Development of Stereoscopic Topographic Mapping Program Using Computer Graphics
The Selection Criteria of Vocabulary -In the Japanese Cases of Usage where College Students Aplogize in the Campus-
A Study of the Birth of Lourdes Grottoes in Japan -Through the Relation between its Birth and the Second Missionary Work by the Paris Foreign Missions Society in Japan-
The idea of building reproductions of sacred sites for those who cannot travel to distant places, visiting them and praying there as if they were original and receiving the same blessing, is common to the construction of substitutes of sacred places of the Holy Land in Europe and to“Fujizuka”,reproductions of Mount Fuji or“Sazae-do”as substitutes for sacred places of Kannon, as well as to“Osunafumi”(stepping onto the sand collected from temples in Shikoku and in sacred places in“Saigoku[West Japan]”) in the Edo-period in Japan. The same idea underlies the construction of Lourdes grottoes, which are replicas of the famous grotto in the Pyrenees. We can see such popular beliefs in Japan on the same level as those of Catholicism. Those beliefs are expressions of people's feelings and, if we refer to Lourdes grottoes, they are built all over the world, including Japan, to support the faith in the Virgin Mary. Lourdes grottoes in Japan are constructed in many Catholic churches, convents and educational facilities. Those architectural works illustrate an important Christian popular belief. However, it has not been clarified how and why those grottoes were built, and their characteristics have not been studied in detail. So in this paper I have explained as thoroughly as possible that Lourdes grottoes became necessary in the Meiji Era, if we take into account the conditions created by the second missionary work by the Paris Foreign Missions Society in Japan, the 19th-century visions of the Virgin Mary in Europe, the diffusion of medals of the apparition among believers, and of the publications about Lourdes in the same period. At the same time, I did my best to clarify, using fieldwork and historical documents, by whom, when, where, in what forms and under what circumstances the first Lourdes grottoes were built in Japan
A Study of the historical Background of KINEMA JUNPO and designed Characters in Taisho Era
A Study of Gunkanjima Island as a Site of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution ― Re-evaluation from the Perspective of Architectural History focusing on Features of the Metabolism Movement in Buildings 16-20 ―
Gunkanjima Island was recognized as a Word Cultural Heritage Site in July 2015, along with other sites of Japan's Meiji industrial revolution. This recognition was limited to some portions of the island (harbor cities and initial production facilities). However, in my opinion, the value and attraction of Gunkanjima Island is not limited to these sections of the island only. This paper presents an architetural perspective for buildings from the Taisho Era onward, particularly buildings 16-20, which are recognized as presaging the architectural "metabolism movement" (1959-1960s). Therefore, it is apperent that Gunkanjima not only has an industrial historical value from the Meiji Era, but it also has a universal value from the greater perapective of architectural history. Section 1 of this study chronicles the histoty of Gunkanjima Island as it is divided into seven periods, with an overview of each period. Section 2 confirms the definitions of modernization period monuments, industrial heritage, and heritage of industrial modernization followed by an update of the current state of the heritage of industrial modernization in Japan, as well as the position of Gunkanjima within the heritage of industrial modernization. In Section 3, site plans are used to understand, analyze, and indicate the distribution and characteristics of various structures on the island. By presenting a number of commonalities between the Gunkanjima Island structures (particularly buildings 16-20, which were mining company housing) and the municipal Motomachi high-rise apartments, which were influenced by the metabolism movement, I clarify how the structures on the small island known as Hashima (and more commonly known as Gunkanjima), presage the metabolism movement a half-century prior to the actual birth of the movement’s principles, and observe how Gunkanjima has a universal architectural historical value beyond the Meiji-era industrial history,
thus explaining the need for its re-evaluation
A Study of the Catholic Church of Tetori, Old and New Building ― From the Beginning to the Construction of the Second Church ―
The Council for Cuitural Affairs of Japan had been deciding until quite recently to propose the “Churches and Christian Sites in Nagasaki” as candidates for UNESCO World Cultural Heritage listing in 2016. Of the 14 recommended sites, one belonged to the prefecture of Kumamoto. The only heritage site in Kumamoto was, as it is well known, the village of Sakitsu in Amakusa, which also included the catholic church of Sakitsu (1934). Of the 14 sites of the recommended World Cultural Heritage sites, 5 churches, including the church of Sakitsu, were built by TETSUKAWA Yosuke (1879-1976), an excellent talent in the history of modern Japanese architecture. The catholic church of Tetori, located in the city of Kumamoto, was also built by Yosuke, known as the “Master Carpenter Architect”, in 1928, when father Bois was active. About this church, however, there are only very simple and approximate descriptions found in commemorative publications of the church of Tetori and of the diocese of Fukuoka, besides a book focused only on that church. There is no reference to the first church, of which we know neither the designer nor the builder. Therefore, in this report I have sought to clarify, with the help of new materials, the process from the foundation of the church in Tetori to the construction of the two churches, paying special attention to the early one. Then, on the basis of the survey of the churches built by Yosuke, I have made my observation, both on that group of buildings and on Yosuke himself, trying to clarify the position and significance of the second church in his career as a “Master Carpenter Architect”. Finally, I have described the architectural features of the second church and I have clearly indicated that, although not included in the list of cultural heritage candidates, this church, more than the one in Sakitsu, has a very important significance from the point of view of the second evangelization of the catholic church in Japan as well as in the hisutory of moderm Japanese architecture
《Colored Space created by Two Flamingoes》On Pursuit of Contrasting Volumes through Representational Clay Sculpture
Fostering Awareness of the PDCA Cycle Using the SOJO University e-Portfolio System
