Practice of solar observation and its evaluation in the earth-science experiment lesson
Student guidance and counseling aimed at self-realization of students― Aiming to be a trusted school teacher ―
An analysis of Lapanese university students' English language learning beliefs
Through administration of an English/Japanese 45-item multiple choice survey, this project seeks to collect data on current SILC students’; (a) beliefs about a contemporary (communicative) orientation to learning English, (b) beliefs about a traditional orientation to learning English, (c) beliefs about the quality and sufficiency of classroom instruction for learning English, and (d) beliefs about foreign language learning aptitude and difficulty (see Sakui and Gaies, 1999)
Enhancing Learner Engagement in a Communicative Curriculum
Throughout the field of English language education, communication skills are increasingly being emphasized. Within the Japanese university context this is particularly the case. There are however many challenges to fostering a communicative classroom. These challenges include learners accustomed to teacher-centered approaches and passive behavior in the classroom. Additional complications inherent to compulsory study include variations in learners’ motivation, interest, and proficiency. This paper presents an attempt to improve learner engagement in speaking activities as part of a project of ongoing curriculum renewal
Reflections on designing and implementing a task-based unit using gamebooks
A small scale action-research project was designed to explore the effectiveness of using interactive narratives to facilitate L2 output in a communicative English class. A four-week unit of instruction was implemented across five classes comprised of non-English major students at a university in Japan. Using graded reader gamebooks from the Atama-ii series, activities were designed to simultaneously engage students in English reading while also promoting active discussion in English. Data was collected in the form of instructor field logs and student surveys. Researchers concluded that although the activities did not facilitate in-class L2 communicative output, the gamebooks did serve to increase students’ willingness to engage in English activities
The Development of the Lourdes Grottoes in Japan ― Based on the Analysis of Various Examples of Construction in the Archdiocese of Nagasaki ―
There are many reproductions of the Grotto of Lourdes, but so far almost no research has been conducted to clarify the religious, cultural or historical position of such models from the point of view of examples of construction or representation images.
In Japan, as far as I know, there are many such examples in the Diocese of Nagasaki and it is not an exaggeration to say that they embody the process of development of the reproductions of the Lourdes Grotto in Japan. Therefore, in this simple paper, based on the investigation of documents and field as well as written survey results, I have introduced and analysed some examples of construction of replicas, specifically those erected in the churches of the Diocese of Nagasaki. Through this procedure I think I have been able to shed light on the construction of the models of the Lourdes grotto that appeared after the primordial Lourdes-like grottoes erected in Japan-which I had considered in a previous paper of mine-. At the same time, I have tried to classify the models of the sacred grotto of Lourdes.
In Chapter 1, I outlined the current situation of various Roman Catholic dioceses of Japan, beginning with the diocese of Nagasaki. In Chapter 2, I have introduced my surveys and investigations. In Chapter 3, after mentioning the focus points in the overview, I outlined the general characteristics and forms of the reproductions of the sacred cave in each church on the basis of my surveys. Finally, in the fourth chapter, trying to classify such models, I summarized the development and expansion of the reproductions of the sacred grotto of Lourdes
The Selection Criteria of Greetings Used by College Students -Consideration of Greetings Presented in the Japanese Education-
Analysis of an Extensive Reading Program
This paper seeks to expand on findings from a SILC project undertaken in the 2011/12 academic year, which examined the implementation of an Extensive Reading (ER) program into the EC4 curriculum. Since that time, extensive reading has become an integral element of both the EC3 and EC4 curricula. The expansion of the program since its inception in 2011 has created new challenges and also necessitated continued research to assess its on-going effectiveness. Thin study will analyse how well the expanded program is supporting established extensive reading principles, and also look at student performance within the program, with a particular focus on data gathered from Moodle Reader
Preceding Studies and Problems about Ceramic Sculptor Shinichi Terauchi
Shinichi Terauchi(1863-1945)was a sculptor who used earthenware as his main material. Additionally, he was an art(craftsmanship) educator most of his life at ceramics production studio. However, very few papers and books reference him. Furthermore, most of the descriptions in those papers and books are only a simple introduction to him. As an early stage in research on Terauchi, the purpose of this paper is to resolve the present circumstances and problems by analising preceding studies. First, in Chapter 1, I survey the life of Terauchi and confirm a his achievements. Next, in Chapter 2 Section 1, I present records and references about him and his works in local history research books, then, in Section 2, I present papers aimed at Terauchi or papers wich feature comparisons of him. Finally, in Chapter 3, I clearly present the issue of how a researcher of modern Japanese sculpture and ceramic sculpture should work by analysing the preceding studies referenced in Chapter 2, in on effort to survey problems and indicate resolved and unresolved points related to the subject matter
