    Experiences in Femininity is a student run, juried exhibition occupying the 1st floor of Criss Library at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The 2024 exhibition is co-curated by Antonia (Toni) Parker and Kennedy Wallman, both are students within the Art and Art History Department. The juried exhibition features selected work based on the UNO student\u27s critical engagement with the theme. Experiences in Femininity is an exploration of the diversity and complexities of the feminine experience. Works selected range from book arts, soft sculpture, poetry, 2-D art, and digital media. Additional programming and a local artist collaboration has been included, to both promote our student led exhibition, and to highlight the rich capacities of our students in their engagement with contemporary feminist thought

A prominent member of the gut microbiome in mammals is Escherichia coli (E. coli). E. coli is a gram-negative bacterium that is commonly found in the lower intestine. To gain access to the bacteria, fecal samples were collected from Common Marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) housed at the Callitrichid Research Center (CRC) located at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Following a six-day protocol, we recorded details regarding growth, viability, and presence/absence of contamination for all cultures. Choice of nutrient broth, selective agar, rpm speed of the shaking incubator, and glycerol concentrations were manipulated for this purpose. A specific and detailed procedure was followed on each day of the protocol, where 18-24 hours was allowed to pass between each phase. The samples were mixed in buffered peptone water facilitated by a shaking incubator at 37°C at 125 rpm. Four-quadrant streaking on MacConkey (MAC) agar was used to grow isolated colonies. After transferring the colonies onto Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) agar with four-quadrant streaking, allowing them to grow into isolated colonies once more, the samples are transferred and stored in culture media in a 10-15% glycerol concentration. This has consistently yielded viable E. coli cultures. Expansion of the E. coli strain library is currently ongoing. As of March 8, 2024, we have been able to isolate E. coli from seven marmosets. We have a total of 146 unique E. coli isolates stored at -80°C in the laboratory. Once it is complete, we plan to utilize the strain library for a series of endeavors. We plan to organize a study focused on examine antibiotic resistance profiles of the marmoset derived E. coli

Structural equation modeling confirmed the negative influence of victimization on self-esteem in cisgender boys, girls, and gender minority youth (GMY) as well. Notably, GMY reported significantly more victimization and significantly lower self-esteem

    Edge Sensor Security: A Structured Literature Review of Perception Layer Attacks

    Edge computing has swiftly developed into a crucial part of modern data infrastructure. It plays a fundamental role in enabling intelligent monitoring and control through sensors and actuators. While there is much work in protecting the computation and network layers of edge computing, the body of work on securing the perception layer that directly collects data from the environment is limited. This work outlines the preliminary findings of a systematic literature review (SLR) aimed at identifying the spectrum of security threats faced by sensors in the perception layer and evaluating the proposed countermeasures. Initial findings suggest a complex threat environment, with the perception layer being vulnerable to physical and remote cyber threats. Notably, Man in the Middle , Sybil , and Replay attacks emerged as prevalent, each accounting for over 8% of the documented threats. This SLR also documents defense mechanisms documented in existing research, pointing towards a multifaceted approach to safeguarding edge computing networks. The outcomes of this review are expected to offer significant contributions to the field by organizing the current understanding of perception layer threats and defenses and informing the future direction for resilient security strategies in various edge computing deployments

    Social Media Engagement and Mobilization to Extremist Violence

    This thesis investigates how engagement with extremist communities on social media correlates with increased violent mobilization among radicalized individuals. It argues that as individuals strengthen their ties to extremist groups online, they increasingly identify with these communities and adopt behaviors endorsed by them. This paper explores various levels of online engagement, from passive interactions to more active involvement, as well as factors to mobilization exhibited as observable behaviors both in person and online. Comparative analysis of two violent and two nonviolent adherents of the Boogaloo ideology reveals ten unique mobilizing indicators in violent cases. When compared against the social media engagement behaviors, it was found that higher engagement behaviors like direct communication with extremists enabled top mobilizing indicators such as specific attack planning, lending support to the main hypothesis

    Monero: Powering Anonymous Digital Currency Transactions

    Cryptocurrencies rely on a distributed public ledger (record of transactions) in order to perform their intended functions. However, the public’s ability to audit the network is both its greatest strength and greatest weakness: Anyone can see what address sent currency, and to whom the currency was sent. If cryptocurrency is ever going to take some of the responsibility of fiat currency, then there needs to be a certain level of confidentiality. Thus far, Monero has come out on top as the preferred currency for embodying the ideas of privacy and confidentiality. Through numerous cryptographic procedures, Monero is able to obfuscate or obfuscate the following: the address of the sender and recipient, the amount that was sent, and the origin of the sender. Monero is sent by taking the private ownership keys for a grouping of Monero and issuing a command to the network to reassign them to a new public ownership key. Thanks to the advent of asymmetric cryptography, there is no current computationally feasible way to link a public key to a private key and unique sub-keys can be generated at any time to allow for further obfuscation. Additionally, Monero uses a novel implementation of ring signatures which allows you to hide the proof of ownership among a group of users. Currently, transactions are signed with 11 potential true sender\u27s signatures and the only information an outsider can reveal is a guarantee that one and only one of those signatures did own the private key for the currency being sent. Additionally, Monero uses advanced mathematics for its routing protocol to ensure it is nearly impossible for an outsider to identify the original source IP that initiated a transaction merely by participating in the network. Finally, there is amount confidentiality, which is possible thanks to a 2018 research project from Stanford called Bulletproofs. Bulletproofs enable an efficient method for conducting a zero-knowledge proof that allows the amount sent to never be revealed and yet outsiders are still able to verify that the funds are legitimate. Even though Monero is open source, hence there is a wide array of contributors and literature, there are still some questions left unanswered after investigating all of the popular sources. First, are there any traces left on a PC that would de-obfuscate a transaction? Second, would an internet service provider (or other party with widespread access to internet infrastructure) be able to identify the source of a transaction? Finally, it is widely known that Monero uses algorithms that are not quantum resistant, so how will quantum computers affect the privacy measures currently in place

    The Impact of School Isolation and Parental Closeness on Agreeableness in Korean Adolescents

    Children are the future; their development in adolescence will determine what kind of future it is. The present study aims to contribute to the understanding of adolescent development through the lens of personality in relation to feeling isolated at school and parental closeness, as well as contribute to the goal of diversifying the sample populations used in exploring personality development by examining a sample population of adolescents from South Korea. The present study used data collected by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) from their survey on social and emotional skills from Daegu, Korea from the older cohort of 3,326 15-year-olds. We predict that the more isolated at school an adolescent feels, the less agreeable they will be. We also hypothesize that closeness to parents will attenuate the association between feelings of school isolation and agreeableness in the sample of Korean students. The results of the present study did not support the first hypothesis but did support the second hypothesis through a conditional effect of school isolation on agreeableness being found at different standard deviations of parental closeness

    Reading Fluency Intervention: The Impact of Integrating Differentiated Instructional Strategies into Small Group Instruction

    This capstone project will report the effectiveness of three instructional strategies and two assessment strategies integrated into a 11-week reading fluency unit. These strategies were implemented in a small group setting with the goal of improving students’ automaticity reading scores. This small intervention group met four times a week for eleven weeks where students practiced choral reading, buddy reading, and game-based learning strategies. Throughout this reading intervention unit student data was gathered through triannual growth assessment, weekly progress monitoring, formal assessment strategies, and a final project. This capstone will also provide an overview of the data collection methods utilized through the unit to record both the inconsistencies and growth in students’ reading fluency
