Reducing health disparities in the deaf community: the impact of interpreters and the rise of deaf healthcare professionals
Are all N2-fixing taxa equal?- Taxon-specific nitrogen-fixation rates of benthic cyanobacteria and diatoms under different environmental conditions
In nitrogen-poor streams or under nitrogen-limiting conditions, algae and cyanobacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen can have a competitive advantage over other taxa. As an energetically costly process, however, N2-fixation rates can be constrained by light availability and temperature levels. Environmental preferences of different N2-fixing species can further shape distribution patterns over time and space. The abundance and species composition of N2-fixing taxa, and their rates of N2-fixation can determine how, where, and under what conditions nitrogen enters the ecosystem and where it goes from there. From nitrogen-poor streams in Iceland and California, we compared N2-fixation rates for cyanobacteria (e.g., Anabaena, several Nostoc species, Rivularia) and Epithemia spp. (diatoms with cyanobacteria endosymbionts) under different light and temperature conditions. N2-fixation rates varied by genus and species, though light and temperature preferences complicated taxon-specific comparisons. N2-fixation rates generally increased with temperature but varied by taxon. Results highlighted areas needing further research. Knowledge of taxon-specific N2-fixation rates under varied environmental conditions will strengthen our ability to scale up predictions of nitrogen cycling and to predict biofilm response to our warming, nutrient-rich world

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to review the rationale for developing a new entrepreneurship and innovation minor at the University. Business leaders value innovative and entrepreneurial acumen in their employees. Many students today will start businesses in the future. A competitive review of all higher education institutions in the state revealed that 14 of them offer entrepreneurship and innovation programs as majors, minors, concentrations, and/or certificates. Since there is not an entrepreneurship or innovation program at the University, there is a gap in the academic offerings. After a review of the marketplace and an analysis of programs at in-state colleges and universities, the authors developed a new entrepreneurship and innovation minor for the University. This paper discusses the need from both a business and university perspective for the addition of a new entrepreneurship and innovation minor at the University. While it will be located in the Business Administration department, the minor is designed for both business and non-business majors. This paper addresses these questions: What is the overall rationale for this minor? What is the business need for it? What is the university need for it? What are the University minor requirements? What new courses are needed and what are their respective course descriptions
Independent Study: Understanding the Pharmaceutical Industry
An undergraduate Healthcare Sales student wanted to understand the pharmaceutical (pharma) industry better to determine if the industry was a good fit. She approached her professor to gain support for an independent study to understand better the history and challenges of selling in the pharma industry. Once completed, the pair recognized this information\u27s value and collaborated in editing the document to share these findings to provide this entry-level salesperson\u27s guide to understanding the pharma industry. Six semi-structured interviews of pharma professionals showed three primary areas of knowledge and ethics required of the entry-level pharma industry salesperson. These suggestions are for the salesperson to 1) focus on patient safety, 2) establish trust-based relationships, and 3) comply with industry guidelines. The study concludes with an overview of three prominent industry guidelines: the PhRMA Code, the Sunshine Act, and the Fair Balance practices
There are Other Ways to Help Besides Using the Stuff : Using Activity Theory to Understand Dynamic Student Participation in Small Group STEM Activities
Integrated approaches to teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are increasingly being implemented in elementary and middle school classrooms, and despite a variety of conceptions of integrated STEM, researchers agree that small group activities and teamwork play a central role in STEM learning. However, little is known about how students participate in the small group portions of integrated STEM curricular units. In this study, a microvideo ethnography framed within activity theory was used to examine small group interactions among sixth-grade students completing integrated STEM activities related to the properties of light. Students working in three different small groups (all-girl, all-boy, and mixed-gender) were included in the analysis. Findings highlight differences in the activity systems across activity type (science vs. engineering) and across small groups, with students focusing on different objectives for completing STEM activities, utilizing different tools as they sought to reach their objectives, and dividing labor differently. Findings from this study suggest that these students, and girls in particular, were less prepared to navigate open-ended engineering activities than highly structured science activities. Theoretical and practical implications for curriculum development and pedagogical strategies are discussed

Poster: Interprofessional Honors Course: Women, Aging, Poetry, and Literature. Building Bridges between Science and Art, Youth and Age.
This poster descrbes a unique interprofessional honors course offered at St. Catherine University that blends women\u27s literature and the science of aging. The course, taught by two professors, one a poet, the other a healthcare professional, was taken by honors students pursuing a variety of majors in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences, and the Henrietta Schmoll School of Health. Students participated in both classroom and community engaged service learning activities, beginning each class session with a poem written by an older woman on a topic related to the material addressed in the text. During seven weeks of the semester students were paired with women from the Sisters of St.Joseph community. Goals of this engagement were to: build relationships with older women, increase awareness of the Sisters of St.Joseph\u27s teachings, understand the aging process through the eyes of an active older woman, and discover the power of poetry to express both the postive and negative experiences of aging. At the end of the semester students created a three part paper: 1. summary of the science of aging, 2. the narrative story of their older partner, 3. a reflection of the student\u27s experience. Student evaluation and feedback from the Sisters of St.Joseph indicated an overall positive experience
Using the Particle Model to Find Structure in Eilenberg-MacLane Spaces
We introduce two models, the bar construction and the particle model, for a collection of spaces known as Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. These spaces can be used as building blocks for other spaces and are of great interest throughout topology. We use these models to compute the homology groups for one Eilenberg-MacLane space in an intuitive and accessible way, and then show how the models can be used to determine the cell structure for additional cases using combinatorial arguments. An introduction to cellular homology and examples are included along the way

Activity Engagement after Cancer in Community Based Survivors
This paper discusses the activity engagement in a sample of cancer survivors (n = 25) seeking community-based support. A modified version of the Activity Card Sort (ACSm) was used to measure activity engagement after cancer. On average, participants reported a 27% reduction in activity engagement since their cancer diagnosis. Findings provide direction for continued study of the needs of survivors in community-based cancer care and generate ideas on occupational therapy’s unique role in community-based survivorship
