    Fostering Emotion Regulation in Lower Elementary Children through Practical Life Exercises

    This action research investigated how integrating practical life exercises and self-regulation lessons could foster emotion regulation in lower elementary children. Twenty First and Second grade students in a public Montessori school participated in this four-week study. Quantitative data tools included students’ feelings self assessments, parent questionnaire, feelings check-in, and tallies of student behavior. Qualitative tools included students’ feeling journals, my observation journal, and children’s practical life reflection. Data analysis indicated that teaching children to identify their feelings and offering choices of calm down activities in the practical life area gave children the tools to recalibrate themselves. By the end of the study, an increasing number of children checked in daily as feeling happy, calm, and focused. Introducing social emotional lessons in September alongside classroom rules, routines, and expectations along with calm down tools equips children with a preventative rather than remedial repertoire of tools to emotionally regulate themselves to be successful learners for life

    An Exploration of American Sign Language/English Interpreters’ Roles and Responsibilities in the Conservation Corps

    Outdoors interpreting is an often-overlooked specialty of the interpreting field. The conservation corps has been around in the United States since the 1930s and has become more inclusive since its conception as a federal work program. Currently, eight conservation corps have advertised inclusive programs for Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth and adults. These programs typically provide American Sign Language/English interpreters to stay and work alongside the crew on various conservation projects. Interpreters in this setting typically have multiple roles including Crew Leader and Crew Member in addition to interpreting responsibilities when needed. Due to the dynamic nature of the dual role interpreter, this research sought to further explore the complexities of conservation corps interpreters. To do so, an action research method was used as well as qualitative data collection and analysis to explore what a conservation corps interpreter’s roles and responsibilities include. After collecting information from surveys and interviews, patterns emerged regarding boundaries, trust, accountability, and the need for structural support for interpreters. This information will be helpful for conservation corps to better understand what dual role employees are managing in the field, and for interpreters in the conservation corps to better understand their work

    X-ray Crystallography at a Primarily Undergraduate Institution: Teaching, Research, and Collaborations

    As accessibility to both crystallographic data and instrumentation have increased, so too has the need to incorporate aspects of crystallography in the undergraduate chemistry curriculum. X-ray powder diffraction and single crystal diffraction represent modern structural methods that are key to student preparation in all areas of chemistry study, from biochemistry to solid-state materials. Though many Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs) have traditionally relied on research intensive universities for crystallographic access, more opportunities now exist for PUIs obtaining, operating, and maintaining their own crystallographic equipment in-house. Our story at St. Catherine University of how we obtained our crystallographic instrumentation, a Rigaku XtaLAB Mini, through a collaborative grant will be shared. Our subsequent work on integration of crystallography teaching in our chemistry curriculum, including incorporation into projects in advanced labs and a stand-alone topics course will also be described. Undergraduate research projects focused on inter- and intramolecular interactions will be highlighted as well as the impact of external collaborations on the expansion of research opportunities to faculty and students provided by in-house crystallography
