    Rubbing Elbows with Them: Building Capacity in STEM through Science and Engineering Fairs

    Using social cultural career theory (SCCT) linked with tenets of equity, we examined the role of participation in science and engineering fairs (SEFs) on youth\u27s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educational and career choices. We analyzed data for evidence of the SCCT constructs of self-efficacy, interest, and learning experiences using constructs of Native American (NA), culturally responsive, and rural equitable pedagogies. Qualitative data included semi-structured interviews, focus groups, practice presentations of SEF prtojects, classroom observations, and mentoring students. Quantitative data consisted of two surveys: STEM Semantics Survey and the Motivation Strategies for Learning Questionnaire. Qualitative results reveal how the teacher built self-efficacy using equitable pedagogy by putting the students in control of their projects, created a network of experts in various science disciplines, developed a culture of mentorship that promoted belonging, and removed barriers for student participation by blending academics with culture for NA and rural mixed socioeconomic status students. She evoked asset-based pedagogies that inspired students to further their education and go into STEM fields. Quantitative findings reveal former student\u27s orientation to participation in science fair activities related to their high interests, perceptions of a challenge, curiosity, and emerging mastery, where students demonstrated high dispositions in science and engineering and self-identified as STEM people. Implications include the use of SCCT, linked with equitable pedagogies to understand interest in STEM fields, mentoring, tapping into the expertise of local professionals to support development of projects, and navigating cultural barriers to provide access for underrepresented youth

    Experiences of Interpreters and Deaf Consumers in Mental Health Support Groups

    There is currently a need for further research in the interpreting field for working in support group settings for mental health and addiction recovery. This gap in the research leaves many unanswered questions of how best to provide services to deaf consumers in these settings. By gathering information on the experiences of both interpreters and deaf consumers who have been in support groups, this research will identify issues that may need to be addressed in order to improve the interpretation process. This research will be the groundwork for future research to identify effective training and skill development that is needed for interpreters to be ready to enter the field of interpreting support groups. The methodology used in this research will be grounded theory which will analyze both questionnaires and interviews to find common themes amongst the study’s participants

    The Regener-Pfotzer Maximum During a Total Solar Eclipse

    The Regener-Pfotzer (RP) maximum is the altitude at which cosmic radiation intensity is the greatest. A decrease of the altitude of the interaction layer, assumed to be measured by the RP maximum, has been suggested to account for a reduction in the secondary cosmic ray flux measured at the surface of the Earth during a total solar eclipse. To investigate this suggestion, high altitude cosmic radiation was measured using Geiger Mueller (GM) counters carried beneath weather balloons both before and during the total solar eclipse on 21 August 2017. The 19 and 20 August 2017 omnidirectional RP maxima occurred at an average altitude of 20.2 km ± 0.9 km. During the eclipse of 21 August 2017 the omnidirectional RP maxima occurred at an altitude of 20.4 km ± 0.8 km. The 19 and 20 August 2017 vertical coincidence RP maxima occurred at an altitude of 18.3 km ± 1.0 km. During the eclipse the vertical coincidence RP maxima occurred at 18.0 km ± 1.0 km. Our results do not show any decrease in the altitude of either the omnidirectional or the vertical coincidence RP maximum outside the range of our measurements before the eclipse

    Interprofessional education workshop on aging: Student perceptions of interprofessional collaboration, cultural fluency, and aging

    Interprofessional education is vital to prepare students in healthcare-related fields for future practice to improve participation in teams and enhance client/patient outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a half-day interprofessional education workshop on aging based on students’ self-rated confidence in working in interprofessional teams, with aging, and culturally diverse clients/patients. Students from eight healthcare-related disciplines at a private mid-western university attended an interprofessional workshop. Afterward, students completed a reflective survey to evaluate pre- and post-workshop perceptions about interprofessional collaboration and caring for aging and diverse clients/patients. Quantitative methods using paired sample t-tests revealed a statistically significant difference in students’ self-reported level of preparedness in the areas of interprofessional education, aging, and cultural fluency (P \u3c .001). In addition, qualitative methods were used to organize data into themes. Additional insights were gained to inform future workshops

    Age-related balance deficits may lead to gait decline and falls. Falls in older adults can have severe mental and physical impacts on the individual and cost the medical system billions of dollars each year. The use of gait training devices (GTDs) may help correct abnormalities in trunk, lumbopelvic, and arm swing range of motion (ROM) during walking.
