    An approach to developing oral health knowledge for allied health students

    Background: Oral health competency-based education approaches have been proposed as a mechanism to address oral health outcomes and equity issues. Recommendations for oral health education for allied health professional students include practices to increase team members\u27 knowledge and skills in the integration of oral health and primary care practice (IOHPCP) initiative\u27s oral health clinical competencies for primary care providers.Aims: This study aimed to examine changes in self-reported knowledge of occupational therapy students in the topics of oral health, the dental profession, and the dental healthcare systems following participation in a series of webinars and a community-engaged learning project.Materials and Methods: This study utilized an oral health education program through webinars and a community-engaged learning project for occupational therapy students. Program evaluation measures were utilized to assess the oral health education activities through self-reported knowledge in oral health topics aligned with IOHPCP domains along with topics identified by the community partner organization.Results: Findings demonstrate that asynchronous webinars can increase self-reported knowledge in occupational therapy students.Discussion: Recommendations for inclusion of oral health education for allied health students related to knowledge of oral health, the dental profession, and dental healthcare systems are shared.Conclusions: Asynchronous webinars have the potential to increase self-reported oral health knowledge for allied health professionals

    Recovery Hub for American Women Writers: Digital Tools for Teaching Workshop

    This workshop invites all attendees to participate in a hands-on session that introduces instructors to a variety of digital tools they can use in the classroom or for their own research. Digital tools can help faculty promote connectivity across disciplines and respond to the increase in virtual and online learning experiences. We envision this workshop as an opportunity for faculty who are new to the digital humanities and those with robust experience using tools in the classroom as a way to connect and share their experiences. As more of us ask our students to create digital texts, study texts that were “born” digital, and use digital tools to analyze texts, we might consider how these student projects extend to different units throughout the university. Facilitators will showcase how to use specific digital tools and demo digital tools that take student projects beyond the classroom

    Protein and DNA Labeling Techniques Suggest that Diploid Populations of Sexually Reproducing Lumbriculus Cross-Fertilize

    Diploid populations of Lumbriculus collected from lakes and sloughs in the Minnesota and Iowa sexually reproduce during the summer months. These worms have reproductive structures including atria, testes, ovaries, sperm sacs, male funnels, female funnels, spermathecae with ventrolateral pores, and protrusible penis sheaths. Histological analysis showed sperm in spermathecae, suggesting that cross-fertilization was occurring. The objective of the project was to look for direct evidence of outcrossing. Worms labeled with the fluorescent dye, Hoechst 33342, appeared to transfer sperm to unlabeled worms. We consistently observed fluorescent sperm in homogenates made from reproductive segments of “recipient” worms incubated with labeled worms. However, we were able to detect labeled sperm in the spermathecae of only one of the recipients. We then explored other biological stains to monitor potential transfer of label from donors to the spermathecae of recipient worms. We utilized a fluorescent dye, rhodamine B, which binds to proteins including those in sperm and seminal fluid and neutral red, a stain taken up by living cells, labeling molecules associated with lysosomes. When worms labeled with either rhodamine B or neutral red were partnered with unlabeled worms, selective transfer of label to the spermathecae of unlabeled worms was observed. These results suggest that out-crossing is occurring in Lumbriculus. Experiments showing that cocoon production by Lumbriculus was dependent on worms being held together rather than individually further support cross fertilization for this freshwater annelid

    Body Positivity Movement: Influence of Beauty Standards on Body Image

    Throughout history, there has always been an idealized depiction of beauty. In each culture the ideal varies but the concept of exclusion is universal. The westernized portrayal of beauty is prevalent throughout and has become ingrained into the fabric of American society. In adolescence, the development of an individual’s body influences their sense of self. With the growing prevalence of social media usage young adults are being introduced to a barrage of images celebrating westernized ideals of beauty. Currently, three out of every four young adults ages 18-24, use at least one social media platform (Perrin & Anderson, 2019). Recently, group of “influencers” noticed the single illustration of beauty, began to rally for change, and the body positivity movement was formed. The movement “hopes to remove the abundance of these images and replace them with images of real-life women of different shapes, sizes, ethnicities, ages, etc.” (Convertino, et. al, 2016)

    With the movement to classify the range of feeding problems in the pediatric population into a unifying term“Pediatric Feeding Disorder” (PFD), there is a need for standard guidelines to choose the most appropriateassessment tool(s) that aligns with the four domains of PFD including: medical, nutritional, feeding skills,and psychosocial factors (Goday, 2019). A recent systematic review on the psychometric characteristics of10 non-instrumental pediatric feeding and swallowing assessments found missing, incomplete or conflictingpsychometric data for all reviewed (Speyer et al., 2018). Assessment and treatment of PFD is critical in alldomains to ensure interdisciplinary collaboration and positive outcomes for both child and family.This study seeks to address two specific research questions: (1) To what extent do current assessments by feeding clinicians address the four domains of PFDs (medical, nutritional, feeding skills, and psychosocialfactors)? and (2) What are feeding clinicians’ perceptions of current assessment tools used in the evaluation ofPFDs?Learning ObjectivesBy the end of this session, attendees will be able to:1. Summarize the assessment tools currently being utilized by occupational therapists and speechlanguage pathologists in the United States for pediatric feeding disorders.2. Associate the current assessment tools they use in practice to the pediatric feeding domains and willbe able to then analyze the effectiveness of the tools they use in covering all of the domains of PFDs

    Evaluating the Clinical Tests for Adolescent Tibial Bone Stress Injuries.

    Background: Tibial bone stress injuries are common among the athletic adolescent population. A thorough patient history and clinical examination are essential to identify the location and extent of injury. However, there has been little description or any validation of clinical tests to help guide clinicians. Consequently, a formal diagnosis is usually dependent on results from proper imaging.Hypothesis: Clinical examinations will be both highly sensitive and specific determining the incidence, grade, and location of tibial bone stress injury as compared with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).Study Design: Case-control.Level of Evidence: Level 2.Methods: A total of 80 consecutive athletic adolescents, from various sports, with greater than 1-week history of shin pain were enrolled in this institutional review board–approved study. Exclusion criteria were age \u3e19 years and history of traumatic injury. Patients underwent a standardized clinical examination, which included a fulcrum test (FT), tap/percussion test (TT), vibration test (VT) utilizing a 128-Hz tuning fork, weight bearing lunge test (WBLT) to determine degree of dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM), and vertical single leg hop test (VSLHT) for height, landing, and pain. Bilateral lower extremity MRI was completed on the same day as clinical evaluation and served as the injury reference. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were calculated to evaluate each clinical examination for its ability to identify a bone stress injury.Results: A total of 159 tibiae in 80 patients were evaluated. No single test or combination of tests was both highly sensitive and specific. Individual clinical tests demonstrated sensitivity ranging from 0.11 to 0.72 and specificity ranging from 0.37 to 0.93. The VSLHT noting an increase in pain was the most sensitive test (0.72; 95% CI, 0.62-0.78); however, its specificity was only 0.37 (95% CI, 0.19-0.55), with a PPV of 0.84 (95% CI, 0.78-0.91) and NPV of 0.20 (95% CI, 0.089-0.31). The WBLT demonstrated a mean ROM of 8 cm, with side-to-side differences (range 0-4 cm) not influencing incidence of injury. Combinations of tests demonstrated low sensitivity (0.03-0.40), with better specificity (0.63-1.0). When considering ability to identify higher grades of injury (grade III/IV), all tests had a high NPV indicating that if clinical tests were negative, there was a high likelihood that the patient did not have a grade III or IV injury.Conclusion: No single test or combination of tests was both highly sensitive and specific. Clinicians cannot solely rely on clinical examination for determining extent or severity of bone stress injury in the athletic adolescent population, but when combinations of tests are negative, there is likely not a high-grade bone stress injury.Clinical Relevance: Clinical tests utilized in the evaluation of adolescent tibial bone stress injury may help indicate the presence or absence of higher grade tibial bone stress injury
