It challenges aspects of the historiography of capitalism in the twentieth century, which tend to center on historical actors and institutions of the Global North. Even when actors in the Global South are discussed, it is usually to portray them as passive victims of an intractable system. By focusing on the Ivory Coast and its economic diplomacy toward the United States, I seek to destabilize this general picture

No full textQuienes le aseguraron a España “la eterna sujeción y la inalterable fidelidad de sus colonias de América,” afirma Zorobabel Rodríguez a fines del siglo XIX, “justificaron, precipitaron e hicieron necesaria la rebelión y la independencia” (Estudios 130). Fueron el colonialismo y el mercantilismo, añade, junto al “sistema proteccionista, engendro de uno y otro, los que, con promesas de inundar España de oro y plata, la sumieron en la miseria.” El rechazo a esta triada “marca en la historia de nuestro desenvolvimiento económico el principio de una nueva era” cuando se abrazó, en 1811, una apertura comercial que, “lejos de confirmar los tristes vaticinios de los que, en razón de los abusos que de ella podrían contenerse, la condenaban,” asegura Rodríguez, “fue fecunda para el país en todo género de beneficios” (131). Su métrica liga el bienestar al crecimiento de la riqueza pública y la privada, y añade que, “al par de esos progresos, se observaron otros no menos importantes y halagüeños, en la población del país, y en la cultura, bienestar y moralidad de sus habitantes.” Al abrirse “a productos de la industria de todas las naciones, a nuevas ideas y aspiraciones, y a hombres nuevos también,” sigue Rodríguez, Chile acoge a quienes “venían a poner al servicio de nuestro adelanto político, literario, científico e industrial, sus luces, su experiencia y sus capitales” (132). Aquí, planteo que Estudios económicos de Rodríguez hace, en 1893, una interpretación de la sociedad chilena decimonónica a partir de la apertura comercial de 1811 que instalaría una continuidad económica liberal, bajo la primacía del libre mercado y sujeto a una matriz cultural católica que sellaría, entonces, el perfil político del conservadurismo criollo
Feminist Philosophy of Humor
No full textOver the past decades humor studies has formed an unprecedented interdisciplinary consolidation, connected with a consolidation in philosophy of humor scholarship. In this essay, I focus specifically on feminist philosophy of humor as an area of study that highlights relationships between humor, language, subjectivity, power, embodiment, instability, affect, and resistance, introducing several of its key themes while mapping out tensions that can be productive for further research. I first cover feminist theories of humor as instability and then move to feminist theories of humor as generative of social relationships. Though I diagnose several tensions between these approaches that require further elaboration and discussion, I conclude that feminist philosophy of humor is a crucial area of humor research that focuses on systematic oppression, political engagement, embodiment, and affective ties
Traditional Chinese Fiction in the English-Speaking World: Transcultural and Translingual Encounters
No full textThis book develops interdisciplinary and comparative approaches to analyzing the cross-cultural travels of traditional Chinese fiction. It ties this genre to issues such as translation, world literature, digital humanities, book culture, and images of China. Each chapter offers a case study of the historical and cultural conditions under which traditional Chinese fiction has traveled to the English-speaking world, proposing a critical lens that can be used to explain these cross-cultural encounters. The book seeks to identify connections between traditional Chinese fiction and other cultures that create new meanings and add to the significance of reading, teaching, and studying these classical novels and stories in the English-speaking world. The Heavenly Class: Divine Servants from Around the Globe
No full textPrevious scholarly interpretations of the Renaissance era have framed it from a mostly European perspective. However, there has been increasing focus in the last few years on the Renaissance as a period of globalization and cross-cultural interactions. As part of a summer research project, I developed a website titled “The Heavenly Class: Divine Servants from Around the Globe” using the program ArcGIS StoryMaps. The site serves as a comparative study of artistic depictions of religious leaders from around the globe from the 1400s to the 1700s. In this project, I decenter traditional Eurocentric views of the Renaissance and provide a more complete narrative of the period by incorporating the art of cultures such as the Ming Dynasty, the Mughal Empire, and the Aztec Empire. One challenge that a comparative study can present is that it may imply the supremacy or inferiority of one work over another. I remedy this issue through the use of a more rhizomatic approach that gives several different pieces equal and sustained attention. Another challenge is applying a specific category such as “divine servants” to a global range of cultures. Cultural relativism should be utilized to avoid making generalizations across different societies. Technologies such as ArcGIS StoryMaps open avenues for art-historical research by creating new formats for conveying information; by having students do independent research on topics in art from a global perspective, students can draw connections between different cultures and decenter Eurocentric perspectives
