Get PDFOn the border between slave society and free society a collection of ideologies mixed. The residents of Adams County, even before its inception on January 22, 1800, lived in a state of division that swirled and crashed against the omnipresent slavery conundrum. The New World Renaissance swept through Adams County in the 1830s bringing schools, public works, businesses, and most culturally significant, new ideas. These ideas would prove to be the fount from which flowed the waters of reform. As the first settlers had made good use of the physical creeks and streams that dotted their pastoral landscape, so too would they put to good use the waters of reform welling up all around them. From temperance to anti-masonry, these reform movements would lend a helping hand in the creation of the most socially progressive institution the county could harbor: an abolition society. However, the Adams County Anti-Slavery Society would be stunted along the way, allowing external pressures to beat back its radicalism. Because of this, the Adams County Anti-Slavery Society never fully realized its potential as a reform movement and degenerated into a Saturday Club, where radical statements might be made but never acted upon. It was here that a split occurred. There were two common paths that the membership took as they came to realize the fate of their anti-slavery organization. The first of these paths was acceptance. Many of the members had been in reform societies of some type before the Anti-Slavery Society. A large group of these individuals decided that a moderated reformism was better than no reformism and they perpetuated a version of the original society, keeping it well stocked and gentlemanly. The other path, taken by those touched with a deep fervor for reform culminates in the use of extra-legal means. The Underground Railroad. This path also bred a strong tradition of communal memory spun from its participant\u27s perceived failure at abolition. This paper will discuss the machinations, myths, and memory of not only the Anti-Slavery Society, but also of the Underground Railroad, Yellow Hill community, and the people who made these organizations work

Effects of Incentives on College Student\u27s Performance
Get PDFPay for performance embodies a theory that the more an employee is paid for their work, the more productive they will be. Using an online survey, this paper studies the effect of incentives on college students, specifically, if college students react differently to incentives than employees and to what degree college students can be motivated to increase their performance on assignments. Participants in the bonus contract were awarded one extra piece of candy for each correct answer. Those in the penalty contract are given the maximum ten pieces of candy before the quiz begins, and with every incorrect answer, one piece of candy is removed from the pile. The results of this study show that participants in the bonus and penalty structure did not differ in performance levels or effort exerted. However, students with a higher preference for compensation in candy also had higher performance levels, but did not spend more time on the task. Diversity in Advertisements and Brand Perception
Get PDFThis research project examines the relationship between representation of diversity in marketing and brand perception. The debate about whether diversity in advertisements impacts how consumers perceive and purchase from brands is ongoing. Thus, this study examines whether companies are rewarded for representing diversity in their advertisements and punished for representation that is inappropriate or insensitive. We conducted an online survey among Gettysburg College students and elicited their beliefs about the importance of diversity in marketing campaigns. We found that consumers are more likely to buy from companies that represent more racial diversity in their advertisements. The same was found for companies that represent more diversity of body types in their advertisements. The appropriateness of advertisements was also found to have an impact on the likelihood of consumers to purchase from companies, with consumers being less likely to buy from companies that have racially inappropriate or insensitive advertisements
An Applied and Public Anthropology of Refugee Resettlement in Europe: A Call to Action
Get PDFThis essay engages with the growing reality of refugee resettlement, specifically in Europe, and aims to find roles for anthropology in this field. By drawing on the ideas of applied and public anthropology along with the long history of anthropological studies of migration, I intend to call the field of anthropology to action. Various potential roles exist for anthropologists in Europe that can alleviate the suffering of displaced individuals. Roles also exist for the field of anthropology to work towards more holistic and effective refugee resettlement. While this essay focuses primarily on resettlement in Europe, I hope it can spark conversations of anthropology and refugee resettlement across the world. The field of anthropology can and should engage with this increasingly important issue. It is time for anthropology to take action
Escalation of Commitment and Heuristics in Outdoor Leadership: How Poor Education Can Impact Outdoor Leaders’ Decisions
Get PDFThis study combines established escalation of commitment theory with research specifically aimed at understanding the role of heuristics in the field of outdoor leadership in order to create an understanding of decision-making processes in this context. Current decision-making frameworks taught to outdoor leaders rely on these theories but has yet to undergo rigorous testing as to its effectiveness. This study gave current decision-making education to one group and a control education to another group and found no significant differences between the two when asked to respond to the same situation. This finding suggests that further research into decision-making frameworks in the outdoors is required to improve the overall education of outdoor leaders
Environmental Injustice\u27s Impact on Asthma Disparities in NYC
Get PDFUnderstanding the social determinants of health is essential when looking at low-income minorities in urban cities. Social determinants of health are conditions in the environment in which people are born, which affects a wide range of health and quality-of-life outcomes. Amongst other determinants, adequate housing can have a significant influence on population health outcomes such as asthma. Zoning inequality negatively and disproportionately impacts the health and the overall quality of life of low-income minorities; zoning is correlated to environmental injustice fueling adverse health effects and health disparities among low-income minority populations. Without the opportunity to receive adequate and affordable housing, communities of color will continue to be burdened by zoning regulations and strained by the environmental injustices–leading them to put their health at risk in hazardous areas. This paper seeks to review the state of the literature on the impact of zoning on environmental injustice, social determinants of health, exposure to indoor and outdoor pollutants and outcomes for asthma, with particular emphasis on how hypersegregation exposes people of color to environmental injustice in urban areas. The literature review shows that differences in neighborhood racial demographics and income result in more exposure to environmental injustice and asthma outcomes in New York City. Under representation and under-maintained public housing in black communities has also been associated with disparities in health outcomes
