Abstract: Restorative Justice, Republic of Serbia. Changes in the criminal law in relation to adult and juvenile offenders bring about certain specific elements of restorative justice in domestic, traditionally retributive criminal justice system. The Criminal Code of the Republic of Serbia provides acquittal in the art. 58 The court may acquit the perpetrator of a crime which is punishable by prison sentence of up to five years, if after committing the crime, but before he found out that he was discovered, remove the consequences of the crime or compensate for the damage caused by the crime. In article 283 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Serbia has been introduced the principle of opportunity for criminal prosecution of adult offenders. Law on Juvenile Criminal Offenders and Criminal Protection of Juveniles RS provides alternative modes of reaction to juvenile delinquency. This model means distancing of juveniles from the criminal justice system and avoiding stigmatization of minor criminal proceedings, by pronouncing of corrective measures and penalties. Moving away from the classic retributive model are reflected in the imposition of corrective orders. Also, special obligations, as a kind of corrective measures warning and guidance, contain some elements of restorative justice, which embodies in the apology to the injured and compensation for damage caused within its capabilities; and from the standpoint of community volunteer involvement in the work of humanitarian organizations or activities of social, local or environmental. One of the proposals for the reform of domestic criminal law refers to the use of restorative justice in prisons

CONCEPT FOR UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE TEXTBOOK FOR CROATIAN STUDENTS (IN TERMS OF LEARNING A CLOSELY RELATED LANGUAGE)

    Get PDF
In creating textbooks and course books for foreign language education, the starting point is the goal of learning the language – language acquisition either on the level of communication skills for specific purposes (business or daily), or as part of the process of training philology specialists, or more specifically, linguistics specialists. In this, among other factors, authors should take into account the ethno-linguistic characteristics of the audience, so the training process should be organised differently for groups of students who study a language closely related to their native language. In studying a closely related language, a variety of phenomena is observed, such as, for example, interference, cross-language homonymy, the fact that ability to perceive and understand a foreign language always outweighs the ability to reproduce material, etc. These points are important to consider when preparing textbooks and course books, and they should be reflected in the selection of lexical material and presentation of grammar. Existing textbooks for learning Ukrainian as a foreign language are mainly not designed for a Slavic languages-speaking audience, which makes the process of training specialists in Ukrainian in Slavic countries more difficult. On the other hand, the methods of organising the material in a textbook and its structure should be designed for philology students and therefore should feature a complex and comprehensive presentation of the language material and combine various methods of teaching. We propose the principles we follow in creating a textbook for learning Ukrainian designed for Croatian students whose primary field of study is the Ukrainian language

WORD CLASS AND TEXTUAL FUNCTIONS OF ANTONYMS: A CORPUS STUDY

    Get PDF
Antonymy is traditionally regarded as a paradigmatic relation, but recent studies of antonym co–occurrence in written discourse have shown that it can be investigated as a syntagmatic relation as well. Such investigations in the Untagged electronic corpus of Serbian identified two major and four minor functions of antonyms in discourse and its accompanying lexico-syntactic patterns, matching the results of similar analyses in English, Japanese, Swedish and Dutch. This paper presents a research on the relation between word class that antonym pairs belong to (e.g. adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs and prepositions) and their textual functions in Serbian written discourse. It is hypothesized that language users employ antonymous pairs in text irrespective of their grammatical class. The general conclusion is that the roles of antonyms in text are not influenced by word class as significantly as one might expect

(RE)CONSTRUCTION OF NATIONALISM IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA - INSTRUMENTALISATION OF LANGUAGE IN THE ONLINE-MEDIA FOR PROMOTING NATIONALISM

    Get PDF
The nation as an "imagined community" mirrors the creation of personal senses of identity, which can lead to feelings of belonging to one group but excluding the other one. Exclusive nationalism has created many brutal conflicts in the 20th century, and a particular example of it was seen in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This kind of nationalism still exists in everyday life supported by an uncontrolled rapid spread of (dis)information on web portals. This paper deals with the reconstruction of the nationalist discourse on web portals in Bosnia and Herzegovina through different concepts of nationalism with a comparative approach using methods of linguistics and cultural and social anthropology. It is a continuation of the contemporary discourse on the concept of nationalism, personal and collective national identity in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as a personal empirical research in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Abstract: This study is based on “stakeholder theory” in order to explain the concept of corporate social responsibility. To examine the social responsibility areas of business organizations, “The Pyramid of Corporate Social Responsibility” model developed by Carroll (1991) was used in this study. According to this model, entire range of business responsibilities can be considered in four groups: economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic. Within the framework of Carroll’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) Pyramid, the aim of this study is to illustrate priorities in Corporate Social Responsibility Report of the leading companies in Turkey. In this context, 48 companies from Borsa Istanbul (BIST) Corporate Governance Index were selected as the sample of the study. Qualitative research approach was used in the study. The data obtained from the annual reports, sustainability reports and corporate governance compliance reports of these 48 companies were subjected to content analysis. According to the findings, economic and legal responsibilities were found to have priority for shareholders, customers and employees stakeholder groups in terms of corporate social responsibility levels. While philanthropic responsibility was found to have priority for community stakeholder group, economic responsibility is important for suppliers stakeholder group. Legal responsibility, on the other hand, is important for environment stakeholder group. In general, economic and legal responsibilities have priorities in all stakeholder groups other than community stakeholder group

    Get PDF
The paper aims at bringing up a type of text linguistic analysis, different from traditional one, with the emphasis on the contrastive studies in general and on the English-Albanian cross-linguistic phenomena in particular. It will concentrate in explaining some of the most intriguing and most diverse text analysis elements having in mind the following text categories: Point of view, Composition, Text Idioms. A grammatical structure (Relative Constructions) has been examined thoroughly within the translation method analysis, out of and within the co-text analysis. It resulted in two different outcomes: traditional direct method analysis on one side and text linguistic co-text analysis on the other. Text linguistics as a special field of studies has been greatly developed due to the increased number of translations from one language into another. Text analysis, which relies on the deep description of micro and macro text elements of the text, is crucial for determining the level of translation accuracy of a particular text. Having in mind the relevance of recent discourse and pragmatic analyses impact in the development of interdisciplinary studies, the explanation of constituent elements of the written text is of great importance for the contrastive text studies or translation studies respectively

STEREOTYPES AND PREJUDICES ABOUT THE ‘OTHER’ AS AN UNAVOIDABLE PART OF BRITISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE

    Get PDF
The concept of the ‘other’ is an inherent part of understanding one’s identity, since people define their roles through their relations toward ‘others’. Generally speaking, the ‘other’ is everyone who is detached and different from one’s self or one’s true nature. ‘Otherness’ became the subject of research in postmodern British literature in terms of its diversity and variety, divergence and disagreement with standard, conventional and established. To demonstrate how prejudices are widespread and what their role in literature is, the selection of British novels of the 20th century has been made with the emphasis on the second part of the century and postmodern British novel. The analysis has proved that stereotypes are indeed unavoidable part of British culture and literature and exposed their particular role in works of literature. The second half of the twentieth century brings seismic shift of literary and national identity: The English novel was replaced by novel written in English language due to importance and to strength. This is the main reason for selection of the British novels of the late 20th century that are representative both for their artistic quality and influence. The analysis of selected works from modern and postmodern periods with the regard to stereotypes and prejudices about 'other' undoubtedly pointed out that mentioned concepts are unavoidable part of British literature and culture, and their numerous variations and roles in literature were clearly demonstrated

This study explores the effects of social networks on English progress in a UAE international English National Curriuclum (ENC) boarding school. The observed population consisted of a case study of 11 boarding students, three female and eight male, who completed their first year of International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curriculum in Year 10. Social network data was collected through the administration of a customized questionnaire, in addition to a semi-structured teacher questionnaire conducted with their English as an additional language (EAL) instructor. The results indicated that the plexity of social ties and the number of relations who used the target language had the highest positive relationship to the students’ English progress across most skills. An increased frequency of ‘non school friends’ in the social network had the strongest negative impact on language progress. This study proved that there may be various significant links between social relationships and language acquisition
