MEETING STUDENTS' DIVERSE NEEDS FOR READING THROUGH DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION STRATEGIES

    Get PDF
The focus of this research is on meeting South East European University (SEEU) students’ diverse needs for reading. Although in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom, all four language skills are important, reading becomes most important when students enter university without enough strategies for reading. Therefore the reading material presented should be differentiated to suit everyone’s needs. According to Biancarosa & Snow (2006) "a full 70 percent of U. S. middle and high school students require differentiated instruction (DI), which is instruction targeted to their individual strengths and weaknesses" (p.8). Consequently, since it is difficult for native learners to read in their mother tongue then it can be imagined how difficult it might be for EFL learners to read in English. Thus, differentiation in reading classrooms becomes an important responsibility for EFL lecturers. The methods of data collection used in this research were teacher questionnaires and classroom observations to help discover the level of knowledge and application of DI reading strategies among SEEU EFL lecturers to meet diverse learners’ needs. The results of the study conducted showed that there is a discrepancy between the researcher’s observations and lecturers’ responses regarding the application of DI strategies and also there is some inconsistency between some lecturers’ own responses that claim to have applied DI strategies but fail to provide examples of such tasks. Hopefully, this research will help raise teachers’ awareness that DI reading strategies should be implemented in their EFL classes generally as well as in their reading classes to enhance diverse students’ reading skills and help them with their academic development

LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY IN THE NON-DIVERSE CLASSROOM

The aim of the paper is to propose some simple ways of promoting linguistic and cultural diversity in a homogenous classroom made of students brought up in a bi-lingual environment and country. The ideas and suggestions come from the experiences of the authors in different environments and workplaces. The comparing groups are of different ages from compulsory school to a university/college level. The paper will be divided in two parts: on one hand there are suggestions which would be useful in a classroom with a teacher coming from the same place as the students, and on the other hand how would those and other ways work out in promoting a linguistic and cultural diversity in a classroom where the teacher/lecturer comes from another cultural and linguistic background. What has been the meeting point, how this type of cultural and language diversity would affect the critical thinking of the students; why would students benefit from diversity-promoting classes are some of the questions answered in the paper. This is a cross-sectional study which tries to put together some possible forms of promoting diversity in the aspect of a language and culture in the classroom which does not mean that is based on a longitudinal type of research but on personal experiences and views of the authors. Moreover it is based on a questionnaire and displays its result

BESPLATNA PRAVNA POMOĆ U GRAĐANSKIM STVARIMA U PRAVNOM SISTEMU BOSNE I HERCEGOVINE

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Evaluating ESL Students’ Creativity in Writing

Writing as a productive skill isan integral part of the language-learning process. However, students do not consider writing an easy skill to learn and many ESL teachers certainly consider it a difficult skill to teach.Creative writing normally refers to the production of texts that have an aesthetic rather than a purely informative, instrumental or pragmatic purpose. Creative writing in ESL classes has started developing lately, but only to be incorporated as a supportive skill in teaching writing.Responding to students’ writing is an important issue to discuss when considering teaching creative writing. Response is a process that includes peer review, peer editing and continuous feedback through the stages of creative writing. By providing constructive feedback, the teacherunderstandsa writer’s problems and intentions by making students responsible for finding and analyzing what needs to be improved. Key words: teaching, writing, creativity, feedback, assessmen

Running Rabbits and Shoulder Markings: Metaphorical Terms in Aviation English

    Get PDF
The role of metaphor as a basic cognitive mechanism in the construction and retrieval of specialized knowledge has been well studied within cognitive terminological theories (Faber, 2012; Tercedor Sánchez et al, 2012; Temmerman, 2000). However, the results of these analyses have mainly been applied in designing or improving terminological resources, leaving somewhat aside the impact metaphor has on bridging general and specialized knowledge, especially in the acquisition of new knowledge. This paper discusses the role of metaphor as a cognitive process in the conceptualization of certain key concepts in the domain of aviation. A number of terms and their collocations that reflect metaphorical mappings from the source domains the HUMAN BODY and ANIMALS have been extracted out of a corpus of English aviation textbooks and manuals related to the field of air traffic management. Instances of metaphorical conceptual mapping are identified and analyzed both at the conceptual and terminological level. Ana Ostroški Anić is a research assistant at the Department of General Linguistics of the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics in Zagreb, Croatia. Her research interests lie in the areas of terminology, specialized translation, LSP, phraseology, and cognitive semantics. She has been working on several terminological projects within the Croatian Special Field Terminology (Struna) program. Keywords: ESP, LSP, terminology, Aviation Englis

The Interconnection and Interrelation Features of Words and Their Importance in Compiling Second Language Dictionaries

    Get PDF
In the process of teaching language the most important task is to know the peculiarities of interconnection of words. And one of the effective factors of learning and teaching Uzbek as a second language is to conduct specific research on interconnection and interrelation features of words and to compose special dictionaries of the Uzbek language for Russian-speaking students. Meanwhile, the issue of interconnection and interrelation peculiarities of words has been investigated not only by many linguists but by some psychologists as well. One of those prominent psychological scientists is N.I.Jinkinn. According to him, the integration of speech units is divided into two phases. He also relates “the grammar field” with the second phase of speech-unitintegration. Furthermore, he points out that in the first phase of this process, words and word forms are spread out in the “speech field”. In the second phase a speaker selects the necessary words for the primary explanation of the idea, which is followed by the correct grammar form, and then collocates with a suitable word [1,45]. For instance, according to N.I.Jinkinn,a noun, an adjective and an adverb do not usually collocate with other words. They are called as lexics, which are spread in the “vocabulary field” but divided into characteristic groups. Keywords: Uzbek language, dictionaries, interrelation, second language, interconnectio
