    Get PDF
Abstract: This paper investigates determinants of the profitability of industrial firms in Croatia, using data for large, medium and small companies for the period 2003-2014. This paper provides a broad theoretical review of the determinants of profitability analysed in economic literature with special remarks on firm level determinants, and explanation of most used variables such as size of firm, revenues, growth rate of revenues, sales, profit in previous years, ownership, productivity level, financial leverage, cost of inputs, indebtedness. Results from the panel ordinary least squares model for Croatia’s manufacturing sector reveal a positive and statistical significant relationship between profitability, total factor productivity, and concentration measured through Herfindahl-Hirschman index. On the other hand, indebtedness and liquidity show a negative relationship with the firm profitability of Croatia’s manufacturing sector

Abstract: Public service quality is in recent years one of the major challenges for economic analysis. It is due to the size of companies providing public services as well as to the importance of obtained results both for companies offering the services and for the public policy creators and administrators. One of the aspects that can be evaluated is the level of service offered or the supply side. The other side is the perceived satisfaction with the service quality, which represents the demand side aspect. There is not much research that analyses how the passengers perceive the quality of the services. The objective of this paper is two folded. Firstly, to evaluate the quality of GRAS services from the aspect of users and secondly to see what needs to be improved in order for non-users or people who rarely use public transport to become regular users. The information is valuable for policy makers as well as operational managers in the public transport system. An insight into what users consider as important and how they perceive existing public transport service can show that investment and improvement of existing service can really attract new users and keep the existing ones. The data were collected using self-administered internet mediated questionnaires to the residents of Sarajevo Canton. In total 247 persons answered the questionnaire. The response rate was above 50 per cent. The results showed that there is wide space for improvements in service, especially if the company is trying to reach non-users

BREAKING FRAME IN MAKING HUMOR - ON THE DISCOURSE OF SATIRE

The paper focuses on a thoroughly pervasive logical and linguistic device – framing. We will see how framing is performed in the discourse of satire and how it contributes to the humorous effect thereof. The analysis will be done on a very specific satiric corpus i.e. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Throughout the end of the paper it will be shown how humor arises with the breaking of frames (Goffman, 1974), and consequently leads to successful satire. Stemming from the very nature of the corpus in question, a latenight TV show, three instances of breaking frame were determined: linguistic, logical, and visual. Keywords: frame, breaking frame, satire, cognitive linguistics, GTVH, humor research, The Daily Show with Jon Stewar

In last couple of decades in contemporary societies, educators and educational institutions have required their students to participate actively and devotedly in their educational process in order to prepare them for the future employment which almost always includes team work and cooperation, Therefore, methods that include students’ cooperation and collaboration within group learning have been used increasingly in all levels of teaching and in all subjects. Nevertheless, it seems that in practice this type of learning is still encountering dependence, passivity, and even anxiety on the part of students. Thus, this paper attempts to provide an insight into students’ perspectives on these issues in the international and multicultural environment of International Burch University. Students were given the opportunity to express their own opinions through the interviews evaluated by taking into consideration key elements of cooperative learning situations (Johnson and Johnson, 1991). Thus, the purpose of this research is to indicate possible shortcomings in the implementation of group work methods applied in practice and to attract students’ attention to their importance by offering possible solutions for their overcoming

One of the issues that need to be addressed in teaching Turkish as a foreign language (TFL) is vocabulary instruction. Teaching the target words and enabling the learners to use them in everyday life is a very significant element in TFL teaching. TFL learners need the vocabulary learned in TFL classes in order to be able to use the language fluently, to communicate with native speakers and to learn their culture as well. Different studies need to be done on the ability of TFL learners to use the acquired vocabulary productively in the four skills in the target language. Developing and identifying teaching strategies and techniques that maximize learners’ vocabulary acquisition and their ability to store and retrieve target vocabulary is an issue that that should the focus of more studies. This study addresses the issue of vocabulary teaching strategies that can be implemented in teaching Turkish as a foreign language at primary and secondary school level. It focuses on a description of methods and techniques accompanied by specific examples. Key words: teaching Turkish as a foreign language, grammer, vocabulary, vocabulary teaching, methods

Çalışmamız kapsamında, Türkçülük fikrine dâhil olmadan dilde sadeleşme akımı taraftarı eserler veren Mehmet Akif’in, Balkan Savaşları dolayısıyla eserlerinde ortaya koyduğu toplumsal aksaklıklar okurun metne yüklediği anlamı merkezine alan “alımlama estetiği kuramı” kapsamında yapılandırılmıştır. Anahtar Kelimeler: Türk Edebiyatı, Akif’in Söylemleri, Batılılaşma, Milliyetçilik Akımı, Başkalaşım   THE PERPECTION OF MEHMET AKİF ABOUT BALKAN WAR IN HISTORY OF TURKISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE Abstract In the history of Turkish Language and Literature, it has been qualified interactions in the Balkans in terms of literature and culture. Interactions between the Ottoman Empire and the Balkan States shows some developments in the fields of customs, traditions and architect in the 14th century. In the 19th century, Europe has developed ideological approach against multinational societies in terms of westernization and nationalism, after some milestones in the West such as Renaissance, Reform and Industrial Revolution. As a result of these developments in the West, 8-9 centuries-old cultural interactions between the Ottoman Empire and the Balkan States slowly begins to decline. However, despite all these discriminative policies of the 19th century, Thessaloniki based “Genç Kalemler” magazine and other Turkish magazines, overriding political aspect, continue to improve in the Balkans. Intellectuals who gathered around the “Genç Kalemler” magazine start the New Language Movement under the leadership of Ömer Seyfettin and Ziya Gökalp in an attempt to simplification of the language. During this period, there are two supporters of simplification without including the idea of Turkism; Mehmet Akif Ersoy and Süleyman Nazif. Because the Ottoman Empire is in the collapse period and the Islamic and Eastern civilizations under its flag begin to fragment, the need for public evaluation without a single nation identity requires the handling of Mehmet Akif discourse. In the present study, the works of Mehmet Akif, a supporter of simplification of language without including the idea of Turkism, about social deficiencies because of the Balkan wars were evaluated. The present study aims to evaluate these topics under the “reception aesthetics theory”. Key Words: Turkish literature, Mehmet Akif discourses, Westernization, Modernism, Nationalist movement, Metamorphosi

ACTN3 R577X POLYMORPHISM IN GORANI POPULATION

    No full text
In humans, there are two types of gene that are expressed in skeletal muscle: α-actinin-2 (ACTN2) and α-actinin-3 (ACTN3). One of the important genes involved in sport genetics is ACTN3 gene encodes α-actinin-3, an actin binding protein which is one of the predominant components of the Z-line in the Type II (fast-twitch) fibers. The α-actinin-3 (ACTN3) gene is composed of 21 exons that is located on the long arm of chromosome 11q on band 13.2. Genetic analysis of ACTN3 gene has showed R577X polymorphism which results in conversion of the arginine at the position 577 to premature stop codon. The purpose of study is to determine genotypes of ACTN3 gene in Gorani population and comparison of these results to results of other published populations. A total of 100 individuals (50 males and 50 females) participated in current study. Examined participants were from 15 to 81 years old. Samples were extracted with salting out method while genotyping for ACTN3 gene was performed using polymerase chain reaction. The statistical analysis was done by Chi-square and by SPSS in order to estimate correlation between ACTN3 genotypes and allele frequencies in Gorani population and others. The frequency of ACTN3 RR genotype was 45%, RX was 36% and XX was 19% and allele frequencies for R was 0.63 and for X was 0.37. The frequencies of RR+RX genotypes were higher than XX genotypes. In addition, there was no big difference of ACTN3 genotypes and alleles between females and males of Gorani population. The allelic distribution of Gorani population has similarities with some European populations. According to results which are obtained in study, ACTN3 gene cannot be used as only genetic population marker, but should be used as athlete gene which is involved in finding sport talents. The present study was first study about the population of Gora. This work will be lead to other studies to determination the genetic background of Gorani population. Keywords: Alpha-actin 3 (ACTN3 gene), Gorani population, Polymerase Chain Reaction, MDS, Dendrogra

Development of Intercultural Education through English language textbooks used in elementary schools in B&H

In today’s globalized world mono-cultural societies have been gradually disappearing. A trend towards the creation of multicultural societies began in 1960s. New multicultural societies were forced by the virtue of new conditions to engage themselves with others. The number of international institutions has adopted documents, which became the backbone of new education policy. Therefore, school systems worldwide began to work intensively on the promotion of intercultural values among young people. Intercultural education is most explicitly accomplished through textbook contents which encourage interaction, exchange, desegregation, interdependency and solidarity among people belonging to different cultural groups living in the same territory. Yet nowadays many multicultural nations encounter difficulties in holding together multicultural diversity and in establishing harmonious interpersonal relationships. This work deals with content analysis as one of the most frequently applied research methods in the field of education; and it is concerned with the analysis of the intercultural content in English language textbooks used in B&H in elementary schools. The main goal of this research is to determine the quantity and quality of content that point to intercultural education in the textbooks of English language used in elementary schools in the Bosnia and Herzegovina. The research involves both quantitative and qualitative analysis. We selected nine categories, important for intercultural education throughout English language textbooks: identity, cooperation and friendship, respect, tolerance, cultural relativism, stereotype, prejudice, oppression, and labeling. Results of textual analysis will offer scientific insight about the possible contributions of English language textbooks to intercultural education in B&H. This research for us is important because we believe that if multiculturalism is accepted as an asset not as a burden, with its proper utilization within the education system, multicultural nations would inevitably continue to benefit from their diversity

In today’s competitive business, the performance of employees has become vital in finance sector. Some studies have suggested that employees’ perceptions of the transformational leadership and gender in their organizations have relationship with organizational performance. Although a plenty of studies support this relationship in developed countries, there is scarce empirical evidence in developing countries. This study tries to examine the relationship among the transformational leadership, gender perceptions and performance in Bosnia and Herzegovina which is a developing and transitional country. Questionnaires were distributed to 150 employees in finance sector. The relationships among variables are evaluated by exploratory factor analysis, reliability test, descriptive statistics and correlations. The study demonstrated a positive and significant relationship between transformational leadership and task performance type of job performance of employees. It also found a positive gender job performance relationship among the employees working in public and private banks of BiH. Keywords: Bosnia and Herzegovina, finance sector, gender, job performance, transformational leadershi

The Impact of Literature On Linguistics: ″A rabbit, an elf, and some horrorshow droogs″

Main goal of the article is the establishment of common ground between two fields of language study; Linguistics and Literature, since the common links that connect these branches not only exist, but are strongly present in many areas of each field. However, they are misconstrued and underestimated, which leads to an incomplete understanding of both. We have used three main arguments, from a certain point of view, to gradually form a strong proof of the interdependency which governs the relation: contribution of Literature to the theory of Linguistics, contribution of Literature to specific branches, and contribution of Literature to Language. Using a considerate amount of written evidence, as well as exploring the history of both fields, it should be evident that the relationship which exists requires a different approach to studies. Saussure’s demarcation might be idealized, as the synchronic primacy might not uphold in the present, as everyday written records are becoming closer to the level that spoken language has in the linguistic development process. This area may require more exploration. The result might be general, and need to be specified, so that it can be used in the field of ELT, as a manner of teaching foreign languages
