Anexamination of their experiences leading others adds to the existingliterature on student leadership at the collegiate level.https://thekeep.eiu.edu/che_posters_college_student_affairs/1002/thumbnail.jp
The Effects of Explicit and Systematic Phonics Instruction on Student Achievement
The purpose of this study was to examine how explicit and systematic phonics instruction impacts student achievement, and to explore how instructional strategies are effectively implemented in the classroom. To guide the study, two research questions were developed: (1) How does explicit and systematic phonics instruction impact student achievement in vowel teams and r-controlled vowels? (2) What are teacher perceptions of explicit phonics instruction and how are they implemented in the classroom? This was a mixed-methods study. Data was collected from 18 second-grade students and one classroom teacher. Quantitative data was gathered using weekly pre and posttests addressing various phonics skills, as well as an Informal Decoding Inventory to provide baseline phonics data. Instruments such as interviews with the teacher participant and observations of phonics lessons rendered qualitative data. Quantitative results revealed that after 4 weeks of explicit phonics instruction, student learning and improvement occurred. Qualitative findings examined instructional strategies that the teacher perceives to be effective and engaging for student success. The findings in this study remain valuable, as the dynamic field of education will inevitably demand that phonics instruction is both effective and adaptable to diverse learning environments
Small Town Voices and Stories: Rural Older Populations and Health Narratives
Stories play a vital role in our humanity; they help us understand the world around us. As we age, our experiences, along with those of the people around us, shape our perceptions of health and influence our healthcare choices. For older adults, narratives become an essential resource in making healthcare decisions. In rural communities like Coles County, Illinois, these stories are especially important for older adults who are navigating the limited care and services available in the area. This reliance on narratives impacts their willingness to seek care, highlighting the need to recognize the power of stories in empowering older adults within patient-provider relationships. This project explores how Walter Fisher’s Narrative Paradigm can help us understand that narratives can compensate for gaps in health literacy among rural older adults. This can lead to either a willingness or reluctance to pursue adequate care when necessary. This project aims to raise awareness among communication scholars and healthcare practitioners about the importance of utilizing narratives in ways that empower older adults in rural areas within patient-provider relationships through stories
Sustainable Hemp Industrial Panels (SHIP) and Its Industrial Possibilities for the Replacement of Oriented Strand Board (OSB)
This study explores the feasibility of using industrial hemp fiber to create composite panels—termed Sustainable Hemp Industrial Panels (SHIP) as a potential competitor for oriented strand board (OSB), a commonly used structural wood product. Given hemp\u27s historical and environmental advantages, including rapid growth, carbon sequestration capacity, and material strength, this research investigates its performance when combined with Urea-Formaldehyde (UF) resin, and in a hybrid form with Southern Yellow Pine (SYP). Two hemp-based composites were produced and tested: one with hemp and UF, and another with hemp and SYP. Using a custom-built hydraulic press, composite panels were fabricated and subjected to 3-point flexural tests to assess their mechanical properties relative to OSB. Results showed that while OSB outperformed both hemp composites in structural strength, the hemp-based panels demonstrated favorable toughness and fiber integrity at failure points. Observations indicated that processing methods, resin distribution, and resin type significantly impacted performance outcomes. Although hemp composites did not surpass OSB in current form, this research highlights hemp\u27s potential as a sustainable alternative with further development and optimization
