A Spiritual Renewal for Italian Immigrants
When the Church had officially declared that an Italian who supported the unification of Italy could no longer be a Catholic in good standing, the question became this: to be a patriot, or to be a Catholic? This question of allegiance brought about anticlerical sentiments. When the wave of “new”-- mostly Eastern and Southern European– immigrants started coming to the United States starting in the 1880’s, they were met with pushback from many of the “old”-- particularly Irish and German– immigrants who held their clergy in high esteem. Many non-Catholic Americans simply used the label “new” vs “old” to describe the immigration trends. This wording was, however, sometimes being used to justify mistreatment and viewing of the recent (almost all Catholic) immigrant wave as inferior, foreign, and strange. Because of this, the Church was cautious about adopting such terminology in fear of making Catholicism and foreignness being viewed as synonymous. Instead, as Richard Linkh detailed, Bishop Francis C. Kelley put the “new” immigrants into two categories that, while not everyone used the same wording, most Catholics unanimously agreed with. These were “self-supporting”, like the Poles and the Germans who actively kept their faith without the help of other ethnic groups in the Church, and the “missionary” group, those that were at risk for losing their religion. Who was thought of most under the latter label was the Italians
Magical Differences as Textual Coding for Neuroqueerness
In this paper I will be looking at Young Adult Fantasy texts in which their protagonist is magically differentiated from his world. I will argue that this protagonist, and those similar, can be analyzed as textually coded as neurodiverse due to his interactions with the other characters in his story and his society at large, as well as having experiences common to neurodiverse people in reality. Further, I will be arguing that the character can function within the definition of neuroqueer as defined by M. Remi Yergeau. These argumentations will be developed alongside each other with the idea of queer-coding acting as a foundational framework, Authoring Autism by M. Remi Yergeau as a foundational guiding text, and my own experience as a neurodivergent individual for additional support in developing these analyses and arguments
Exploration of Nickel Complexes for C-N Cross-Coupling Using Photocatalysis
In today’s chemical industries, we are always looking to find a way to make production more efficient and less expensive. In the pharmaceutical industry, the production of common and helpful medicine is essential for profit. Almost all drugs are produced by a series of reactions and bonding to other molecules to make the desired products. One of the most important and common bonds in the molecule structures of these drugs are C-N bonds.
The current catalysis methods for C-N coupling involve high-priced noble metals such as palladium, iridium, or platinum. For example, the most popular method from Buchwald-Hartwig uses a palladium catalyst to perform carbon nitrogen coupling. As this was a great improvement over the previous methods of using strong electron-withdrawing groups to promote nucleophilic aromatic-substitution, it is still not a perfectly efficient method as it still relies on the costly palladium metal.
In this work, we will be building off the work from Chern-Hooi Lim et al who formed a bidental complex with a Bipy ligand and NiBr2•DME. This Ni(II)-Bipy complex has been shown by Chern-Hooi Lim2 to work as an efficient C-N coupling catalyst at room temperature when illuminated by 365-390 nm light for a wide range of reactions between aryl bromide and secondary amines. This method helps remove the costly palladium from the reaction by using a cheaper metal with similar properties such as nickel
