    Religiosity and relational anxiety: A cross-denominational study

    Presentation Location: Weber Center, Room 101 Abstract Background: Prior research has provided evidence for a correlation between religiosity and anxiety, quantifiable differences between denominations, and a somewhat equivocal link between religiosity and social trust. Methods: This present study seeks to extend the existing body of knowledge by assessing the relationship between intrinsic religiosity and both trait and relational anxiety across denominational groups, and by measuring the relationship between relational anxiety and social trust. Participants (N = 1,905) were asked to provide their informed consent as well as basic demographic information and answers to four surveys. Results: Analysis revealed a modest negative relationship between intrinsic religiosity and trait anxiety. Overall, a weak, positive relationship between intrinsic religiosity and relational anxiety was indicated, but a negative relationship was found for several denominations. Significant differences were observed in these correlations between Protestant Christians and Catholic Christians. Last, it was found that social trust and relational anxiety were not related. Conclusion: Two of the hypotheses were supported by the data, while two were not. One significant finding is that the relationships between intrinsic religiosity and trait and relational anxiety differed depending on participants’ denominational affiliation

    Believing in love: Intellectual humility and well-being

Recent discussions within epistemology consider intellectual humility as a virtue, but many leave room for vice—even violence. I argue that any view of intellectual humility must also account for love. Otherwise, at best, one is flirting with another virtue, say, intellectual temperance or intellectual diligence. I conclude that, to count as genuine humility, one must hold and express one’s beliefs in love

    Intersecting Social Work Practice, Education, and Spirituality: A Conceptual Model

    The relationship between spirituality, social work, and social work education is complicated and often difficult to teach. Though social work has significant religious roots, it distanced itself at the turn of the 20th century in pursuit of professionalism and scientific respectability. Today the National Association of Social Work (NASW) and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) recognize spirituality and religion as aspects of client diversity; however, few strategies exist for integrating this content into social work curriculum. This presentation offers a conceptual framework for understanding the spirituality-social work relationship based on the Ecological Model and the concept of person-in-environment. Educators can use this framework as a tool for teaching spirituality and religion content across core Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) courses

    AgInno Fish Farming Aerator

    Presentation location: Reed Hall of Science Room 214 Aquaculture is a great way to provide an income and food source to many agrarian communities in Central America. A large factor in successful aquaculture is proper aeration for the high-density fish populations. A properly aerated pond results in a large quantity of dissolved oxygen (DO), which stimulates growth and reproduction, while a poorly aerated pond fails to support a healthy population. The goal of the Olivet Nazarene University Fish Farming Aerator project is to design and construct an energy-efficient aerator intended for implementation in an exploratory tilapia pond at Misión el Faro in Punta de Palma, Guatemala. The project sponsor, AgInno Institute, has access to a tilapia pond, and is planning on building more ponds in the near future. The tilapia pond is operated by local low-income members of the community, for the purpose of providing the operators with an additional income source

    Presentation location: Reed Hall of Science Room 214 The SAE Baja Suspension team has worked to optimize the vehicle’s suspension for the SAE Baja competition. The SAE Baja competition includes both static and dynamic events. The static events include a business presentation, a cost report, as well as a design presentation. The dynamic events include an acceleration and braking tests, a suspension or rock crawling course, a maneuverability course, as well as a four-hour endurance race. Optimizing the suspension includes testing weight distribution, shock pressure, camber, toe, and the addition of coil-overs. The team also has been overseeing the overall Baja team and progress to ensure the vehicle will be complete and ready prior to competition

    Measuring the decrement times of volatile anesthetics in Drosophila melanogaster using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

    Background Model organisms are widely used in research, especially in the context of complex situations. One model organism that has been widely used is the common fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster (D. mel). D. mel are most commonly used in the context of genetics, but they have also been widely used in research focusing on general anesthetics. One value that has not been measured in D. mel, however, as it relates to general anesthetics, is the decrement times. This is what was the present research set out to determine. Methods The anesthetics studied in this research were isoflurane and sevoflurane. Flies were exposed to 40 µL of anesthetic in a centrifuge tube for 10 minutes, after which the flies were allowed a recovery period of a set time. In the case of the control group, this time was 0 minutes. The anesthetic was then extracted using dichloromethane (DCM) and enflurane was added as an internal standard. Results The decrement times of male flies with isoflurane were found to be around 30 seconds for the 50% decrement, 2 minutes for the 80%, and 3 minutes for the 90% decrement. With sevoflurane in male flies, the values were found to be around 2 minutes for the 50% decrement and 3 minutes for the 80% decrement. For female flies the values found with isoflurane were found to be about 30 seconds for the 50% decrement and 4 minutes for the 80% decrement. The values found using sevoflurane with female flies were about 5 minutes for a 50% decrement time, but the values found in female flies with sevoflurane were not consistent. Conclusions Though the data with sevoflurane were inconsistent, those collected with isoflurane give valuable insight into general anesthetics. This information can be used in future work involving drosophila flies and anesthetics in order to gain a deeper understanding of how inhalational anesthetics work

    Restoration of β-Hexosaminidase A deficiency through the use of molecular chaperones

    Tay-Sachs disease (TSD, also known as GM2-gangliosidosis) is an autosomal-recessive neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disease caused by a mutation in the HEX A gene which codes for the lysosomal enzyme β-hexosaminidase A (Hex A)7,8. For patients with TSD, GM2-gangliosides cannot be properly broken down, and, as a result, accumulate in their neurons, causing severe neurological complications5. Currently, there is no cure for TSD. Although all past treatment options have been ineffective, the novel pharmacological chaperone therapy has shown promise as a means for effective treatment by improving the folding and transportation of Hex A. Here, pharmacological chaperone therapy for TSD was investigated using both chemical chaperones and pharmaceutical chaperones. This study set out to reduce the amount of GM2 gangliosides in cells by increasing Hex A activity. To stop the accumulation of GM2 gangliosides, only about 10 percent of enzyme activity is actually needed2. This study set out to ameliorate Hex A activity in TSD cells and decrease the GM2 ganglioside buildup in a TSD derived cell line, GM00502, using four factors. Each of these factors; DMSO, glutamic acid, Pyrimethamine, and a decrease in temperature, have been shown to improve Hex A activity in in vitro cell culture models of TSD3,4. Pyrimethamine is currently the leading pharmacological chaperone for treating TSD and is currently in its Phase I and II clinical trials1. It is important to note that the fate of mutated Hex A enzymes depends on their specific mutation. Of the 74 mutations for Hex A, three mutations (1278ins4, 1421+1G→C, and Gly269Ser) account for 98 percent of all TSD cases8. The human kidney fibroblast cell line, GM00502, used in this study contained two of these mutations (1278ins4 and 1421+1G→C)6. The effects of the molecular chaperones outlined in this project have yet to be tested on a cell line with both of these major mutations. I hypothesized that temperature reduction, DMSO, glutamic acid, and pyrimethamine would rescue Hex A activity in the TSD derived human kidney fibroblast cell line GM00502. A study in cytotoxicity was conducted to find the optimum concentration of DMSO, glutamic acid, and Pyrimethamine to treat both GM00502 and HEK293 (control) human kidney fibroblasts. After confirming proposed treatment concentrations were not cytotoxic, a gradient of three concentrations of each factor was then used in the subsequent testing phase. Differences in GM2 ganglioside levels can be quantified through the use of LysoTracker DND-26 staining and fluorescence microscopy. GM00502 TSD derived cells were shown to contain an increased accumulation of GM2 gangliosides when compared to the unafflicted HEK293 control cells. After treating GM00502 cells with DMSO, glutamic acid, Pyrimethamine, and a temperature reduction it was found that all treatments were able to reduce the overall GM2 ganglioside level. Likewise, each treatment was also able to further reduce the GM2 ganglioside levels in HEK293 cells. Of the four factors tested, 250 mM glutamic acid was shown to be the most effective in reducing lysosomal accumulation in HEK293 cells whereas 1.5 ug/mL pyrimethamine was most effective in GM00502 cells
