    Origen’s Christian Philosophy: Misunderstood Master or Horrendous Heretic?

    Throughout history, there has been no more a divisive figure than Origen of Alexandria with regards to his teachings being considered complete heresy or pure genius. Heretic or not, it is unquestionable that Origen’s innovative influence as the Father of Systematic Theology is far-reaching in Christian philosophy and systematic theology. His most important written work, On First Principles, exemplifies the most important goals of systematic theology by organizing the foundations of faith thematically to be best understood. Because he is one of the first to present theology in this manner, his method can be directly traced to secular sources. Utilizing some principles of the philosopher Plato, Origen pioneered systematic Christian philosophy in On First Principles. Within this seminal work, some concepts of dubious orthodoxy were presented, including accusations of universalism, the pre-existence of souls, and a two-fold creation narrative. In spite of Platonic philosophy leading to accusations of heresy, Origen should not be completely discounted as an important historical theologian. While being influenced by Platonism, Origen still adhered to orthodox teachings about God, Scriptural interpretation, and the existence of the Spiritual realm. By studying the contextual influences on Origen’s thinking, how accepted orthodoxy was practiced in his time, and how Origen intended his works to be read allowances can be made to retroactively redeem Origen from accusations of heresy. In my presentation, I will argue that the historical condemnation of Origen is unreasonable in light of a better understanding of who Origen was and what he taught

    Presentation Location: Warming House, Olivet Nazarene University Abstract Research suggests that the COVID-19 outbreak has significantly strained mental health and intensified preexisting mental health struggles. Amid the pandemic and the mental strain associated with it, many are concerned with which individuals seem to be struggling with stress related to COVID-19 the most. Specifically, there has been a call for research to incorporate several risk factors and contemplate the significance of flexibility. Therefore, this project will examine if the personality and environmental variables of psychological flexibility, neuroticism, and perceived social support are related to COVID-19 related stress. Olivet Nazarene University students who received extra credit to participate and social media users completed the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, demographic measures, and a scale assessing neuroticism in an online survey format. Additionally, levels of COVID-19-related stress (worries) about: (1) getting (contracting), (2) dying from, (3) currently having, (4) family member getting, (5) unknowingly infecting others, and (6) experiencing significant financial burden following COVID-19 were assessed. Data collection is in progress and will cease on Saturday, March 13, 2021. Data analyses will examine associations between neuroticism, psychological flexibility, perceived social support, and COVID-19 related stress using Pearson’s correlation coefficient and multiple regression

    Investigating relationships between religion, politics, self-compassion, and attitudes toward social justice

    Presentation Location: Weber Center, Room 101 Abstract The purpose of this study was to expand upon previous research that looks at the relationship between religiosity and attitudes towards social justice while assessing the concept of spirituality known as self-compassion. Additionally, attitudes towards prisoners and demographics that include religious identity, ethnicity, and political affiliation were assessed. Undergraduate students at Olivet Nazarene University voluntarily participated in the study and anonymously completed an 81-item survey that assessed scores relating to self-compassion, attitudes towards social justice, and attitudes towards prisoners and reported their religious identity, political affiliation, and ethnicity. Multiple regression was used to assess self-compassion scores based on sanctification of social justice scores and attitudes towards prisoner scores. Tentative results indicate no significant relationship between self-compassion scores and attitudes towards prisoners score. Tentative results also indicate a significant relationship between sanctification of social justice scores and self-compassion scores

    ACL Injury Prevention Participation Amongst Collegiate Female Athletes

    Presentation Location: Weber Center, Room 101 Abstract Background: A common injury for athletes is a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament. There is a higher rate of injuries among female athletes rather than male athletes due to many anatomical and physiological problems. One of the proposed causes of these injuries is the difference in hormone levels in during the phases of the menstrual cycle. ACL injury prevention programs have been used to help reduce the number of injuries among athletes, yet many athletic teams to not actively participate in these programs. Many studies have used the Lower Extremity Scoring System as a way to evaluate an athlete’s risk of sustaining an ACL injury for athletes that have and have not participated in ACL injury prevention. Methods: 122 female collegiate athletes were tested using the LESS model and a questionnaire on the injury prevention and menstrual cycle history of the athlete. The average LESS scores were compared in order to determine significant differences between athletes who had participated in injury prevention, and those who had not, as well as athletes in different phases of the menstrual cycle. Results: One out of the eight teams had been actively participating in ACL injury prevention and had the lowest average LESS score of 5.43. The menstrual phases all had similar averages of LESS scores ranging from 7-8. Conclusion: The results of the study concluded ACL injury prevention had lowered the risk of an ACL injury among the collegiate athletes, however, much less athletes were participating in ACL injury prevention than expected. The hypothesis for the menstrual cycle had been rejected due to the follicular phase having the lowest average LESS score

    Nucor Dust Transport System Design

    Presentation location: Reed Hall of Science Room 330 The pneumatic conveying system that transports electric arc furnace dust from steel production at Nucor Steel Kankakee Inc. experiences blockages within the piping system which requires manual dislodging. The project\u27s purpose is to prevent the regular formation of blockages and to automate the detection, location, and elimination of the blockages that do occur. ****** The current dust transport system Each baghouse house currently has its own dust transport system that transports dust to our central load out building. Nucor produces 28.1lbs of dust for every ton of steel made. Nucor Kankakee is permitted to produce 1.2 million tons of steel. The dust is collected in each baghouse by filter bags that collect and drop the dust in a hopper. The hopper drops dust into a screw conveyor that carries the dust to the transporter associated with the baghouse that generates the dust. Each system consists of two tanks that are stacked on top of each other with a gate that separates the two tanks. The top tank receives the dust from the screw conveyor as the initial holding tank. Based on the fill level of the top tank the gate will open and allow dust to drop down into the bottom tank. Once the gate closes the bottom tank becomes pressurized and it blows the dust to the silo in the load out buildingagajanian (positive pressure). Due to the system being positive pressure if we have a leak then dust is continuously blown outside the system. Once the dust is outside the system we cannot load the dust back into the system. A system needs to be designed to eliminate the potential for spill if containment in the piping is lost

These robots needed to abide by the numerous VEX constraints and perform efficiently for the competition. At the end of the project, the team has gone through rigorous testing and validation processes to establish how well the robots could perform at the competition

Design a system to convert holding tank # 10 into an aerobic treatment tank. This system should include all components, piping, pumps, and infrastructure. A cost analysis of installing and running this system should also be performed
