Mothers and Sons: Queen Mothers of Judah and the Religious Trends that Develop During Their Sons\u27 Reign
This thesis studies the implicit relationship between the early gĕbîrôt of the Judaean Monarchy and the religious trends during the reigns of their sons. While previous studies had noted a relationship between the origins of the gĕbîrâ and the religious evaluation of her son, a systematic treatment on this subject has not yet been written. After necessary background information has been explored, this study systematically analyzes the first three queen mothers of Judah—Bathsheba, Naamah, and Maacah—in view of their ethnic or national origins, the theophoric nature of their sons’ names, and their implicit religious and political effects upon their sons’ reigns. In a final section, it compares these findings with later gĕbîrâ of righteous kings within the Judaean Monarchy—Abijah and Jedidah. This study confirms that pagan mothers indeed have sons that follow pagan gods, and Yahwistic mothers have devout sons, but it seeks to develop this trend in more depth
Impact of Organizational Fairness on Ethical Policing in the Community
Since 2015, policing has suffered from negative publicity due to unfortunate and often deadly interactions between police officers and people of color. As a result of these sad events, various programs have been incorporated into many police departments to increase professionalism among officers. One such program focuses on increasing legitimacy by teaching procedural justice concepts to officers. This study examined the impacts of organizational fairness on officers from the perspective of procedural justice. Building on previous research, this study focused on the officers and sergeants employed in two small municipal police departments in the Midwestern United States. Ninety-eight participants from the two departments were recruited and surveyed to test this study’s assumptions. The questionnaire was based on one used by Van Craen and Skogan in 2017. The survey examined participants’ self-reported attitudes and beliefs about procedural justice and their perception of organizational fairness and treatment of citizens. A correlational analysis, multiple regression analysis, and factorial analysis of covariance were used to demonstrate and test the relationships between internal and external procedural justice and the variables associated with fairness in discipline, job assignment, and promotions. This study’s findings suggest that officers who are treated fairly by their organizations have a higher tendency to treat citizens sensibly and judicially, r(87) = .29, p = .005. This study has various implications for policing organizations, and it offers an insight into organizational dynamics in small municipal police departments, which are often understudied
Optimizing Percentile Matching
Point estimation is a technique used in statistics to estimate unknown parameters in populations of data by using samples of data from that population. Percentile matching is a method of point estimation that selects one piece of data from a sample and assumes that the percentile that piece of data represents in the sample is equal to that same percentile’s theoretical value in the population. That assumption is then used to project what the unknown parameter is. The fundamental question our research sought to answer was which percentile should be matched from the sample to the population to produce the best point estimates for the exponential distribution. By evaluating percentiles that naturally occurred in samples, we were able to use order statistics to calculate the variance and expected value of error for point estimates created by different percentiles. We concluded that creating point estimates using the 80th percentile will consistently be optimal
Finding the Balance The Effects of α-cyclodextrin, 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin, and cholesterol Bacteroides vulgatus and Clostridium bolteae
Atherosclerosis is a cardiovascular disease that is characterized by the hardening of arteries through the formation of cholesterol plaques. Cyclodextrins could potentially treat atherosclerosis by shrinking plaques. These cyclic oligosaccharides can make complexes with cholesterol but have also shown toxic side effects. This study looked for potential negative effects of cyclodextrins and cholesterol on gut bacteria. It was hypothesized that Bacteroides vulgatus will have decreased growth when grown in broth with cholesterol. In contrast, Clostridium bolteae will have decreased growth when grown in broth with cyclodextrins. Due to the fact that these bacteria are anaerobic, Clostridium bolteae and Bacteroides vulgatus, were grown using GAM broth under CO2. Data was collected by using a spectrophotometer to measure changes in bacterial growth throughout the growth cycle. Each bacteria was treated with one of three chemicals at one of three concentration to make a total of 9 different conditions. α-cyclodextrin, 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin, and cholesterol with concentrations of 1 mM, 10 mM, and 100 mM. The slopes of the log phase of bacterial growth were compared using a two tailed T-Test with α=0.05. Growth of Clostridium bolteae was significantly inhibited for most of the cyclodextrin trials and all the cholesterol concentrations. Bacteroides vulgatus growth was inhibited by 100 mM concentrations of cholesterol and α-cyclodextrins. Interestingly, Bacteroides vulgatus growth was significantly increased when grown with 1 mM and 10 mM concentrations of cholesterol. Continued research is needed to determine when cholesterol concentrations become harmful to Bacteroides vulgatus. Clostridium bolteae needs further research to understand the 10 mM α-cyclodextrin trial that did not show significant inhibition. The results demonstrate that cyclodextrins are associated with inhibited growth for these two gut bacteria but expansion of this test to other gut bacteria is key for a deeper understanding of the impact that cyclodextrins would have on the gut microbiome as a whole
