    How Demographic and Social Factors Correlate With the Perception of Gluten and Gluten Sensitivity (GS)

    Learning Objective: To determine which of the presented demographic and social factors correlate with GS or gluten misconceptions to discover potential contributors of GS. Background: With an increase in GS cases, an exploration and understanding of how demographic and social factors such as gender, ethnicity, economic status, family/friend behavior, and social media correlate with GS and the perception of gluten was sought after. Method: The researcher constructed a survey that was reviewed by 13 individuals for content, clarity, and internal consistency. The survey was sent out to the student body (2,658) at a small Midwestern university. The final number of participants was 176. Questions covering demographics, social backgrounds, GS, social media, and perception of gluten were included. Differences between groups (those with GS and those without) were analyzed using independent samples t-tests. The relationship and association between variables were analyzed using the two-way chi square test and phi coefficient, respectively. Results: Participants were more likely to report GS if they grew up with someone who had GS, X2 (1, N=172) = 34.8, p = \u3c .001. A strong positive association between the variables was determined (φ = 0.45). People with GS reported following more GS/gluten-free diet promoting celebrities and influencers on social media (M=3.44, SD=9.8) than people who did not report having GS (M=0.78, SD=1.73); t (165) = -2.99, p =.003; d = 0.59. Conclusion: Results suggest that social factors such as the incidence of GS within the family and the number of GS/gluten-free diet promoting celebrities and influencers followed on social media do correlate with GS. The findings support the need for additional research to explore the relationship between these social factors and GS.     The Reliability and Validity of the Open Enneagram of Personality Scales

    The purpose of this study is to assess the reliability and validity of the thirty-six-item Open Enneagram of Personality Scales (OEPS). Our general hypothesis was that the OEPS would show adequate reliability evidence but not validity evidence. Participants were acquired through a small denominationally affiliated Midwest university, Amazon Mechanical Turk, and social media. Test-retest reliability was done with 249 participants, whereas internal consistency reliability, factor analysis, and correlations with the Big Five Inventory (BFI; John, Donahue, & Kentle, 1991) were done using 1,039 participants. An average Pearson’s correlation of .68 (range: 0.54 - 0.75) showed inadequate test-retest reliability for the OEPS factors. The average Cronbach’s Alpha was .46 (range: 0.27 - 0.56) for the internal consistency of the OEPS factors. Confirmatory factor analysis found insufficient evidence for the OEPS (χ2 = 1255, p \u3c .001, CFI = 0.56, TLI = 0.50, and RMSEA = 0.08). This study used Pearson’s correlation coefficient to correlate OEPS factors with the BFI factors and found many correlations (-0.30 \u3e r \u3e 0.30) that support several of our predictions for convergent validity (See Table 2). There were also some relationships between the OEPS and BFI that were to be expected but were not supported in this study’s analysis, which is most likely due to the lack of strong psychometric support for the OEPS. Overall, this study showed OEPS did not show strong reliability or validity evidence

It is needed to rotate it certain degrees until it forms the ^ shape. That is, the ends of the legs touch the conveyor system. The angle irons can be of different lengths (10’ to 40’). The design and validation must be done through engineering calculations (e.g., dynamical analysis and/or finite element analysis). Finally, a small-scale proof of concept is needed as a deliverable, in addition to the design and validation explained above

    Assessment of Walls with Phase Change Materials through Synergistic and Performance Measures using Experimental and Simulated Test Houses

    Current research on living and working spaces continues to strive to identify the most energy-efficient methods for heating and cooling, and many novel technologies have emerged from the research. One of the most promising, and the topic of this quantitative analysis, is the retrofitting of phase change materials (PCMs) into the walls of structures. Research has shown positive results, such as a reduced transfer of heat through walls when PCMs are retrofitted into wall construction. However, more analysis regarding PCMs’ energy-saving capabilities is needed to convince the general population that despite the initial cost for retrofitting PCMs into walls, they can reduce the energy load required from buildings, thus reducing energy cost in the long term. This quantitative analysis provides additional metrics and graphs, such as standard deviations and heat maps, to better illustrate the energy-saving protentional of retrofitting buildings with PCMs. Furthermore, analyses are still being conducted to identify which wall (north, south, east, or west), is contributing the most towards energy savings. The results of the current analysis will better convince consumers of the benefits of retrofitting PCMs into buildings, since they will be able to install PCMs in the walls that benefits them the most. The metrics used and developed in this study will strengthen the case for PCMs in buildings and could be used to test previous positive experimental results

    Commanding Heights 20 Years On: What Remains In Light of Recent Events?

    In the spring of 2002, the Public Broadcasting System in the United States aired a three-part, six-hour series entitled, “Commanding Heights: The Battle for the World Economy.” These programs, which were based on the book of the same title by Daniel Yergin and Joseph Stanislaw, covered the debate over economic theories in the 20th century (“The Battle of Ideas”), the transition from state-dominated to market-oriented economies in the last two decades of this century (“The Agony of Reform”), and the various dimensions of the latest wave of globalization (“The New Rules of the Game”). This series is a reflection of what Gideon Rachman, the chief foreign affairs columnist for the Financial Times, has described as the Age of Optimism: a period of time from 1991 to 2008 that was characterized by a belief in the ongoing progress of markets, democracy, and technology around the world. In light of the major international events of the last 20 years – the financial crisis and global recession of the late 2000’s, the rise of authoritarian and nationalist political movements around the world, and the COVID-19 pandemic –this presentation will examine the legacy of the optimistic vision that was presented in this series, including a treatment of the remnants that remain, as well as those which are unlikely to return in the near future
