Increase Faculty Awareness through Personal Experiences in Active STEM Teaching and Learning at a Christian University
Jesus Christ taught through parables, examples, teamwork, repetitions, and questions, which are the foundations of active teaching and learning. The purpose of this presentation is to increase and invoke faculty involvement in active teaching for optimal student achievement. To emulate Jesus, educators should continually implement hands-on lab experiments; peer-to-peer, project-based, and brain-based teaching methods in their classes. Mentoring students includes providing help through office hours, teaching assistants, weekly homework and exam review sessions, and study groups. Relating to students through social occasions such as meals at the cafeteria; attending the student organizations and sports events, concerts, competitions are additional creative mentoring opportunities
Optimizing Percentile Matching
Point estimation is a technique used in statistics to estimate unknown parameters in populations of data by using samples of data from that population. Percentile matching is a method of point estimation that selects one piece of data from a sample and assumes that the percentile that piece of data represents in the sample is equal to that same percentile’s theoretical value in the population. That assumption is then used to project what the unknown parameter is. The fundamental question our research sought to answer was which percentile should be matched from the sample to the population to produce the best point estimates for the exponential distribution. By evaluating percentiles that naturally occurred in samples, we were able to use order statistics to calculate the variance and expected value of error for point estimates created by different percentiles. We concluded that creating point estimates using the 80th percentile will consistently be optimal.

Determining the Decrement Times of Anesthetics in Drosophila Melanogaster Using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry
Model organisms are widely used in research, especially in the context of complex situations. One model organism that has been widely used is the common fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster (D. mel). D. mel are most commonly used in the context of genetics, but they have also been widely used in research focusing on general anesthetics. One value that has not been measured in D. mel, however, as it relates to general anesthetics, is the decrement times.
Flies were exposed to 40 μL of the anesthetic isoflurane or sevoflurane in a centrifuge tube for 10 minutes, after which the flies were allowed to recover for various amounts of time. The anesthetic was then extracted using dichloromethane (DCM) and enflurane was added as an internal standard.
The decrement times of male flies with isoflurane were found to be approximately 30 seconds for the 50% decrement, two minutes for the 80%, and three minutes for the 90% decrement. For female flies the values found with isoflurane were found to be approximately 30 seconds for the 50% decrement and four minutes for the 80% decrement. The values found for the 50% decrement time of sevoflurane were about five minutes for the female flies and two minutes for the male flies, but the values found in female flies with sevoflurane were not consistent.
Though the data with sevoflurane were inconsistent, those collected with isoflurane give valuable insight into general anesthetics. This information can be used in future work involving drosophila flies and anesthetics in order to gain a deeper understanding of how inhalational anesthetics wor
Time to Stop Worrying: A Correlational Study on Individualist Versus Collectivist Time Perspectives and Anxiety
Purpose Research has indicated a significant relationship between anxiety and time perspective (TP), which is the way one views life in terms of the past, present or future. TP is broken down into five facets based on the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI), including past negative (PN), past positive (PP), present fatalistic (PF), present hedonistic (PH), and future (F) time perspectives (Zimbardo & Boyd, 1999). Time perspective is thought to be impacted by one’s culture, although there is a lack of representation in studies on TP cross-culturally, which makes it difficult to generalize. In order to add to the research on time perspective’s relationship to anxiety and to fill the gap on the role of culture in this phenomenon, the variable of individualism was included in this present study.
Procedure A total of 525 participants were obtained from 22 countries including the United States, India, Brazil, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Upon confirmation of informed consent, we distributed a survey to participants measuring each individual on time perspective, using the ZTPI; individualism, using the Individualism and Collectivism scale (Singelis et al., 1995); and anxiety, using a subcategory of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (Goldberg et al., 2006).
Results We found that individualism showed a positive relationship with F and collectivism showed a positive relationship with PP. Individualism, but not collectivism, correlated positively with anxiety. Lastly, correlations between PN and PF resulted in positive, significant relationships with anxiety and correlations between PP and F resulted in negative, significant relationships with anxiety. Interestingly, PH showed a significant positive relationship to anxiety, which was the opposite of what was hypothesized. This would be a variable to consider for further research.
Conclusion These results suggest one’s outlook on time plays a role in psychological well-being. Implications on culture’s role in this phenomenon have also been strengthened by these findings. Though continued study is merited, this information further validates the value that time perspective has in developing interventions for emotional disorders such as anxiety
Finding the Balance: The Effects of α-Cyclodextrin, 2-Hydroxypropyl- β-Cyclodextrin, and Cholesterol on Bacteroides Vulgatus and Clostridium Bolteae
Atherosclerosis is a cardiovascular disease characterized by the hardening of arteries through the formation of cholesterol plaques. Cyclodextrins have the potential to treat atherosclerosis by shrinking plaques. These cyclic oligosaccharides are known to make complexes with cholesterol and have potentially dangerous side effects such as cytotoxicity and gut microbiome changes. This study looked for potential negative effects of cyclodextrins and cholesterol on gut bacteria. It was hypothesized that Bacteroides vulgatus will have decreased growth when grown in broth with cholesterol. In contrast, it was hypothesized that Clostridium bolteae will have decreased growth when grown in broth with cyclodextrins. Due to the fact that these bacteria are anaerobic, Clostridium bolteae and Bacteroides vulgatus, were grown using Gifu Anaerobic Broth under CO². Data was collected by using a spectrophotometer to measure changes in bacterial growth throughout the growth cycle. Each bacteria was treated with one of three chemicals at one of three concentrations to make a total of 9 different conditions. α-cyclodextrin, 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin, and cholesterol were used to treat the bacteria at concentrations of 1 mM, 10 mM, and 100 mM. The slopes of the log phase of bacterial growth were compared using a two tailed t-test with α = 0.05. Growth of Clostridium bolteae was significantly inhibited for most of the cyclodextrin treatments and all the cholesterol concentrations. Bacteroides vulgatus growth was inhibited by 100 mM concentrations of cholesterol and α-cyclodextrins. Interestingly, Bacteroides vulgatus growth was significantly increased when grown with 1 mM and 10 mM concentrations of cholesterol. These results demonstrate that cyclodextrins are associated with inhibited growth for these two prototypic gram negative and gram positive gut bacteria. Expansion of this study to other gut bacteria is key for a deeper understanding of the impact that cyclodextrins would have on the gut microbiome as a whole
SAE-Baja 4WD Redesign
In collaboration with the Baja SAE club, this senior design team is tasked with designing and fabricating a Baja vehicle with the goal of competing with competitive success in a 2021-22 Baja SAE Collegiate Design Series competition. The project will include all aspects of the vehicle, including but not limited to: roll cage, suspension, steering/control, and drivetrain. Also, a goal of the project is to design the vehicle with the future AWD/4WD Baja requirement in mind, while making every effort to meet that goal for this upcoming Baja competition. The team will also manage the ONU Baja SAE Club which includes but is not limited to creating a competition checklist to ensure reliable operation during competition, coordinating the work assignments for club members not on the senior design team, preparing all required documentation/presentations to SAE, and ensuring the team’s vehicle adheres to all rules outlined in the official Baja SAE Rules
Dewaxing Bulding Containment
This project will be on the Nutrition and Health side of Kensing where we manufacture Vitamin E. The problem for the students to solve will be the lack of secondary containment for our dewaxing building. The building uses acetone to thin the vitamin E for filtering to remove pesticides. We used to have onsite waste treatment, so the acetone could go right to our process sewer, but the onsite waste treatment has since been removed. If acetone goes to the process sewer today (i.e. if a spill were to occur), we would be fined by the city. If we plug the trench to prevent acetone from going to the city, we create a flammable atmosphere in the dewaxing room. The material that goes into the trenches would be considered hazardous waste and not reworked for GMP reasons. If they decide to use an existing tank, they need to worry about RCRA implications
2022: The President\u27s Dinner For Faculty and Staff
Tammy and I welcome you to this 72nd President’s Dinner! That’s a long tradition. Just think of how many professional forefathers and mothers held the position you now occupy. Think of their steadfast dedication to our great cause, their grit during challenge, their timely talent consecrated to God through this place and for these people. Thank you for carrying the torch forward, for our time. Tonight we enjoy the theme, “A Fruitful Community.” The tense and sour American culture makes this Olivet community, by contrast, quite life-giving! Yet imagine an even deeper joy as we become an especially fruitful community. Our special thanks to Prof. Ashley Sarver for skillfully hosting the program, our Resident Assistants for graciously serving the meal, and to special guests like retired faculty who honor us by their presence.
