The Effects of Creatine Supplementation on Muscle Synthesis and Fitness Levels in Drosophila melanogaster Using a Model of Muscle Atrophy
This study examines whether an inhibited electron transport chain can be aided with supplemented creatine to make up for the challenged adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production mechanism. The differences between male and female flies and the supplementation of creatine at a 0.15% concentration was studied. The relationship between these components was studied over the course of two 3-week trials using a fly treadmill and Drosophila. The effects of creatine on a mitochondrial disease modeled Drosophila melanogaster were analyzed by tracking climbing speed, leg width, and body width. The research yielded largely minimal differences between supplemented and non-supplemented, mutated, and non-mutated mitochondria, and before and after the trial. Combined gender trials showed qualitative decreases in leg width for mutated flies and a slight increase for wild-type flies. Combining trials and genders yielded results that were largely inconclusive
The use of Aloe-based Silver Nanoparticles as a Possible Treatment for Contaminated Water
Water contamination is a world-wide issue that causes the death of millions yearly. This comes from regularly tainted water with water borne pathogens, which is typically seen in undeveloped areas. As antibiotics are used more, more resistance is being seen, and thus newer methods of microbial contamination need to be developed. Silver nanoparticles have shown success in microbial contamination on petri dishes, but not in a water system. It was hypothesized that if silver nanoparticles were added to bacteria contaminated water they would be able to reduce the amount of bacteria present. Silver nanoparticles that are synthesized from plants such as Aloe vera are thought to be less toxic and thus safer for the environment. In this research study both the ability to decontaminate water and the toxicity of silver nanoparticles was tested. It was found that aloe-based silver nanoparticles at a high enough concentration are effective at decontaminating water containing pathogenic bacteria. There is further research needed to better understand the differences in silver nanoparticle concentrations needed and their mechanisms as well as their toxicity. As of now, silver nanoparticles are thought to be toxic and need further research before they can be released into the environment.

Introducing Various Foods During Infancy and the Development of Food Allergies During Toddler/Preschooler Years
Introduction: Children are developing food allergies that persist into their adult lives. Literature hypothesizes that introducing foods into a child’s diet late increases the risk of developing food allergies. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the relationship of introducing allergy foods within the first nine months to determine if allergen symptoms were observed by the age of two.
Methods: The FDA/CDC Global Opinion Panel Section C of the Infant Feeding Practices Survey was administered to 60 parents of children aged 2-5 participated. Twenty-two responses were returned and analyzed using a Chi-Squared Test of Independence. Parents were recruited by MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) coordinators.
Results: A statistically significant relationship was found between introducing food early (months) and allergy development in 2 of the 12 allergen foods. Cow’s milk X² (1, n= 18) = 5.73, p=0.017, Cramer’s V= 0.564 and soymilk X² (2, n= 13) = 7.88, p=0.019, Cramer’s V= 0.778.
Discussion: Introducing cow and soymilk earlier than 9 months led to more cases of allergies to these foods compared to introduction after 9 months. Data collected on the other 10 food groups were not statistically significant.
Conclusion: Introducing cow and soymilk before 9 months correlated with a greater chance of developing an allergy to those foods in children older than 2. Further research on this topic must be conducted with larger participant groups. From a health perspective, results emphasize the need and responsibility of parents to educate themselves on the introduction of allergen foods to their children
Καθαρός: The Pure - Setting Narrative in the Fourth-Century Roman Empire
My presentation illustrates the development of the Christian historical fiction novella named Καθαρός set in the early fourth century of Christian history closely following the events of the Great Persecution and its long-term effects on Christian communities in Asia Minor and North Africa. Previous Christian novels set in the Roman era primarily focus on the first century, and with the significant thematic potential found in later centuries after the life and resurrection of Christ, I embarked on this writing project. The research that affects my narrative is separated into four categories: the history and effects of Diocletian’s Great Persecution, fourth-century churches in Carthage and surrounding North African regions—particularly the nature of the Donatist Schism and its anthropological history, the early reign of Constantine the Great and his interactions with the church, both catholic and otherwise, and the Council of Nicaea and its impact on Christian history going forward. Effort was taken into researching the development of novel writing and historical fiction and its many facets as well
Tiny House for Universal Application to Urgent Housing Needs

The goal of this project is to design and construct a tiny house with multiple potential applications including homeless shelter, temporary residence for refugee communities, ‘new field’ missionary housing, and disaster relief housing for governmental and non-governmental organizations in times of crisis. The intent is to make the house modular, self-contained, durable, and low-maintenance for both favorable and harsh environments. Design will embrace a minimum life-expectancy of ten years and aims to make construction components non-toxic and recyclable. To address issues of applicability to international relief crises, Dr. Gary Morsch, founder and CEO of Heart to Heart International, will be consulted.
Credit for the envisioning of this project goes to a friend of Dr. Seok Lew, a pastor (Rev. Kim) to the homeless church (House of Prayer for All Nations), who constructed a tiny house in his garage during the Covid-19 pandemic and delivered it to a homeless people
Holland Shear Die
During the proposal phase, the current shear die and process were analyzed to determine necessary functions and constraints for a modified design, as well as issues believed to be key instigators of part deformation and deterioration. Previous attempted solutions were also analyzed to gain insight into the problem and ideas. Potential solutions were then developed based on these areas of interest, which include the portion of the die that sits below the welderhead, the hinge pins, the cutting edge, and the latch handle. The primary solutions that were worked on throughout the proposal phase were support ledges to address imbalanced forces and die tipping, and redesign of the pin sections to incorporate bushings into the design. Besides design, material research was a major portion of the proposal phase. After initial designs were decided, stress analysis and simulations were done to verify their viability
