The relationship between the transcendent world of religious experience and the material world of things is long established. From the veneration of relics by Medieval pilgrims to the modern w.w.j.d. bracelet, the believer’s status within a particular Christian group is often confirmed by the visibly consumed object. For the Christians born of John Wesley’s eighteenth century revival, objects associated with the movement marked them as conspicuously and distinctly Methodist. Coinciding as is it did with Britain’s leadership in the industrial revolution, Methodist objects also established a close association between spiritual revival and the class based consumerist transformations reworking British society. As a result, the creation of Wesley and Methodist objects of consumption place the movement within the larger narrative of the rise of the culture industry and the mechanical reproducibility of the image. Methodist objects, then, are material goods born of immaterial considerations occupying a nexus of religious, social, and industrial change.
This exhibit brings together highlights from Olivet’s extensive collection of eighteenth and nineteenth century Methodist related Staffordshire pottery in order to understand and confront their place within the industrial reproducibility of religious imagery and the changing economy of British belief. Through busts and figurines of John Wesley, commemorative plates, Primitive Methodist teacups, and more, viewers are encouraged to reflect on both the commodification and consumption of religious based identity across eighteenth and nineteenth century British Methodism
The Use of Endangered Midwestern Prairie and Savanna Ecosystems by Bumble Bees of Conservation Concern
No full textBumble bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) are important pollinators, yet many species are experiencing range contractions and declines, particularly in the American Midwest. Tallgrass prairie and oak savanna are critically endangered grassland ecosystems that have been reduced to less than 1% their historical extent, but which support significant floral resources throughout the growing season. While some work has been done on bumble bee communities in tallgrass prairie ecosystems, little is known about bumble bee communities in savannas, where greater structural complexity could foster greater nesting and food resources. In this study we collect and compare data on the community composition, dynamics and floral resource use of bumble bees in endangered tallgrass prairie and black oak sand savannas in Northeastern Illinois. We emphasize dynamic of those species of conservation concern (Bombus pensylvanicus, B. fervidus and B. auricomus). These data are important for prioritizing both species and ecosystem level conservation action.

Best Practices for a Comprehensive College Transition Program (CCTP)
No full textAs ONU focuses on increasing student persistence, one logical target population of students would be those that have not had the academic support and success in high school to fully prepare them for the rigors of college work. Students who experience poverty often report feeling ill-prepared for college coursework and have been shown to lack a sense of belonging due to being minoritized and historically marginalized. One approach to improving student outcomes for these students is the development of a CCTP, or Comprehensive College Transition Program. The presentation will explore best practices for the content and implementation of a CCTP and discuss the implications of such a program for Olivet Nazarene University
Impact of AMPA (Aminomethylphosphonic Acid) on the Fertility of Live Bearing Fish
Get PDFIncreases in metabolic disorders, fertility issues, and population numbers have led researchers to begin investigations into pesticides for the likelihood that their introduction into the agricultural industry as well as the permeation of these chemicals into natural habitats has been a contributing factor to the prevalence of these issues. Aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) has been one of the dominant prospective chemicals for investigation for its prevalence and infiltration into both food products as well as within environmental reservoirs. As the research into whether these pesticide breakdown products have the potential to act as metabolic inhibitors or hormonal disruptors further research is needed. P. reticulata is a live-bearing fish model, making it ideal for research of this nature. P. reticulata live-bearing reproduction allows for the investigation into both short-term direct contact study as well as generational permeation of the fish, this being researching the capability to impact the fish bred by mothers exposed to the chemicals but not themselves directly. This may also give insight into mammalian models such as humans as the live-bearing model closely mimics the reproduction of mammalians. Using the P. reticulata model we developed methods for researching the impact of food spiked with the AMPA on the fertility of the mothers. Spiking the food directly better models the infiltration and accumulation of the AMPA within the trophic system of the aquatic environments. In addition to these preliminary runs, we developed methods for further runs as well as new testing parameters for further quantification of the impact of the AMPA on the fish’s fertility. These combined interests have resulted in fascinating studies that have found certain foods, namely plants, can have a variety of medicinal benefits.....The purpose of this study is to determine if plant extracts that have high levels of certain phytonutrients can increase the activity of cellular enzymes that reduce oxidative stress in SH-SY5Y neurons, and how their effects differ when combined with green tea extract (GTE), an extract that has been extensively studied for its antioxidative properties
