This research explores adjunct instructors\u27 current teaching climate and culture. Adjunct instructors in Olivet’s School of Education will complete a survey sharing their perspectives about culture and climate while teaching online. We anticipate the outcomes of this educational research will solidify the importance and relevancy of enhancing collegiality, communication, and collaboration of adjunct instructors while engaging in online instruction. We hope that survey results suggest that continued improvement across equity, communication, and collegiality are critical aspects that impact the climate and culture of an online teaching modality

The Effect of Masks on Allergic Rhinitis Symptoms Related to Ragweed and its Influence on College Students
No full textBACKGROUND: This study explored the effect of masks on allergic rhinitis related to ragweed. Research has been shown that surgical and KN95 masks reduce allergic symptoms due to dust, pollen, and ragweed. A study in Israel found a strong correlation was between wearing a KN95 and reducing severe allergic rhinitis symptoms related to nasal symptoms and another study focusing on pollen supported this finding. Lastly, a previous study on ragweed found that all nasal symptoms improved, and ocular symptoms remained unchanged.
METHODS: This was a qualitative study involving twenty college students aged 18 to 25 from Olivet Nazarene University with self-reported or physician-diagnosed allergic rhinitis in the November of 2022. Data was collected manually through a modified survey from allergic specialists and analyzed using Microsoft Word displaying results on graphs for frequency.
RESULTS: The surgical mask revealed having the most effect on allergic rhinitis symptoms with a majority reporting mild nasal symptoms during the experience and no nasal symptoms after the experience. Most surgical mask-wearers felt the mask helped moderately during the experience or reduced one to two symptoms. Surgical mask-wearers reported a likeliness to wearing the mask in the future.
CONCLUSION: The study implies that the surgical mask may be an effective intervention to reduce nasal allergic rhinitis symptoms related to ragweed. A larger study and repetition of the study on another day is necessary to examine the effects of environmental change such as low or high ragweed counts, and how late allergic rhinitis is affected by mask-wearing.

Sleepy Summers
Get PDFMy name is Rachel Carter. At the time of this writing, I am a senior majoring in English and Writing at Olivet Nazarene University.
For me, poetry is a breath of fresh air for me when I have nothing else to do. That’s sort of what these poems are about--having nothing to do in the summer, especially in 2020 during the pandemic. Home is in Ingleside, Illinois and after awhile, things stay the same there and I like static environments but I’m learning that I want to grow and change and I don’t think I had realized that yet when I was writing these poems. I found comfort in my Wisconsin vacations with my grandparents and I was afraid of leaving for college a year later. So I wrote about what I wanted to do whether I felt good or bad that day. I wrote about what scared me and what excited me and what I was thankful for and what I was nostalgic about—like the houses I used to live in, especially the one my family calls the old Butterfield house. But that summer was sleepy and when you’re sleepy you drift and dream. So these poems are mostly me day dreaming, over-romanticizing or allowing intrusive thoughts to haunt my mind

Analysis of the Population Structure and Migration Habits of the Northern Leopard Frog (Lithobates Pipiens) at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie
Get PDFMassive amphibian declines of recent years have pushed researchers to pursue population genetics surveys and assess the status of these essential components of many ecosystems. The Northern Leopard Frog (Lithobates pipiens) has continuously experienced population declines across the continental United States due to a combination of habitat losses and environmental changes. Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie houses a considerable portion of L. pipiens in Illinois, and the two creek watersheds studied within this location provide ideal conditions to support these animals. Because this prairie restoration project is a relatively recent development, further assessments regarding the population structure and degree of migration within these L. pipiens populations are needed. Analysis of seven microsatellite loci specific to L. pipiens revealed significant deviation in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium for most populations, supporting the large estimated migration rate of 7.197 migrants per generation. Genotype clustering analysis also implied large instances of gene flow between populations—a likely effect of many migration events. Additionally, high levels of genetic diversity (Ho = 0.792-0.873) and total private alleles (46) were surprisingly maintained in all observed populations, suggesting large population sizes. These findings indicate the presence of an incredibly large, dynamic, and biodiverse L. pipiens population that has not previously been defined in this area. With this information, further protection of the Midewin populations can be achieved to avoid the genetic diversity and population size loss associated with L. pipiens groups located in the western United States
