Enabling and Constraining Factors for Developing Organic Aquaculture in Europe
Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food-producing sector globally, contributing to 51 percent of the world’s fisheries and aquaculture production in 2022, excluding algae (FAO, 2024). However, organic aquaculture remains a niche market, accounting for a production of 330,789 metric tons (Willer et al., 2024) in 2022, representing about the 2.8 percent of the global aquaculture production. The bulk of global organic aquaculture production is led by China, followed by European nations (Willer et al., 2024). In Europe, organic aquaculture represented solely 6.7 percent of total aquaculture production in 2020 (EUMOFA, 2022). According to the latest report from EUMOFA (EUMOFA, 2022), within the European Union (EU), mussel farming dominates organic aquaculture production with 41,936 metric tons, trailed by Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar; 12,870 metric tons), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss; 4,590 metric tons), common carp (Cyprinus carpio; 3,562 metric tons), oyster (3,228 metric tons), and European seabass/gilthead seabream (Dicentrarchus labrax and Sparus aurata; 2,750 metric tons)
Water management in organic agriculture
Organic farming practices are recognised for promoting a sustainable approach to agriculture that benefits both the environment and human health. Notably, the absence of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers prevents the dispersion of harmful chemicals, resulting in improved water quality. Less explored are the impacts of organic farming practices on water quantity—particularly water usage. Understanding this is especially crucial during times when water resources and aquatic ecosystems are under significant pressure.

Der bereits in einem Vorgängerprojekt für das Schwein validierte einfache und praxistaugliche laboranalytische Ansatz zur Schätzung des standardisiert praecaecal verdaulichen Rohproteins (spcvXP) bei Einzelfuttern, soll auf seine Anwendung beim Geflügel getestet werden.
Gesamtziel des Vorhabens ist es, einen Beitrag zu einer adäquaten Aminosäure-Versorgung von Geflügel zu leisten und damit auch Leistung und Tiergesundheit zu unterstützen sowie Stickstoffüberschüsse, die belastend für das Tier und die Umwelt sind, zu vermeiden. Dies lässt sich durch eine präzise Proteinbewertung des Futters erreichen.
Die Proteinbewertung erfolgt nach GfE seit 2006 auf Basis des spcvXP. In vivo wird dieses bisher mit einer invasiven, das Tier belastenden Methode (Entnahme eines definierten Darmabschnitts) bestimmt (Rodehutscord et al. 2004). In vitro wird das spcvXP häufig mit einer aufwändigen und bisher wenig etablierten enzymatischen Methode (Boisen und Fernandez 1995) bestimmt. Daher soll eine schnelle Labormethode zur Schätzung des spcvXP beim Mastgeflügel entwickelt werden. Analog zur Rohproteinfraktionierung beim Wiederkäuer nach Licitra et al. (1996) wird anhand des Neutral Detergenzien- (NDUXP) oder Säure-Detergenzien-unlöslichen Rohproteins (ADUXP) das spcvXP geschätzt. Basierend auf der Bestimmung von NDUXP bzw. ADUXP wird das ND-lösliche (NDLXP) oder AD-lösliche Rohprotein (ADLXP) berechnet und für die Ableitung von Schätzgleichungen genutzt

The dataset comprises plot-level data from a long-term experiment starting from 2011, set up within the framework of a CoreOrganic Project (TILMAN-Org), and managed by the Agroecology research group from the University of Barcelona, in collaboration with the Consortium of Gallecs. This is a field trial on the effects of tillage, fertilization and green manures in an organic rotation, with one temporal replicate and four spatial replicates in a split-split-plot design, on a clay loam with c. 1% soil organic matter, under a Mediterranean climate with Mean annual temperature 16°C and mean annual precipitation 599 mm. It is one of the first of its kind in Mediterranean climate. It includes detailed information on farm operations, annual yields and weed abundance, and soil analyses every five years

The "Gypsum-Lime Power" project uses an on-farm strip trial at four sites to investigate the effects of fertilizing with lime and granulated natural gypsum/sulfur fertilizer in combination on various parameters. The site in Kalborn and Kahler and the two in Eschdorf are legume field forage and permanent grassland. The parameters collected and to be evaluated are yield, plant constituents, legume content in the crop and various soil parameters. As this is a demonstration trial, a further objective is the communication of the results as well as the exchange within the network of consultants, scientists and practitioner
