The Biodynamic Movement in Britain, A History of the First 100 Years, Bernard Jarman, Floris Books, 2024 (Book Review)
The book ‘The Biodynamic Movement in Britain, A History of the First 100 Years’ is timely but disappointing. Timely, because Dr Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) presented his Agriculture Course at Koberwitz a century ago, and thereby laid foundations for the development of the Biodynamics (BD) and organic agriculture movements. Disappointing, because it is riddled with errors, hearsay, and gratuitous fabrication. The book is not founded on rigorous scholarship but rather presents a mischmasch of truths, half-truths, and fabrications as historical fact. In Britain, the Biodynamics movement dates back to an Anthroposophy Conference at the Quaker Centre in London in 1928, where Dr Carl Mirbt (aka Mier) (1902-1975), as an emissary of Count Carl Keyserlingk (1869-1928), presented a lecture on Steiner’s agricultural ideas. The newly widowed Marna Pease (1866-1947) promptly took up the challenge of advancing the cause and recruited Mirbt to promote BD in Britain. Under Marna Pease’s stewardship the BD movement took root in Britain and the Anglo-sphere more broadly. The book’s account of her is muddled. On a positive note, this book lists all the office bearers of the three British BD associations from 1928 through 2023. The book creates and propagates false narratives and is not recommended for reading or acquisition. The book is recommended for retraction and subsequent revision; or alternatively, reassignment as ‘historical fiction’

Toward better biodiversity impact assessment of agricultural land management through life cycle assessment: a systematic review
Agricultural intensification has driven global biodiversity loss through land management change. However, there is no consensus on assessing the biodiversity impacts of changes in land management practices and intensity levels using life cycle assessment (LCA). This study reviews 7 expert scoring-based (ESB) and 19 biodiversity indicator-based (BIB) LCA methods used to assess biodiversity impacts, aiming to evaluate their quality and identify research needs for incorporating land management change in LCA. Overall, BIB methods outperformed ESB methods across general criteria, especially in robustness (95% higher). BIB methods assess biodiversity impacts based on land management intensity levels, whereas ESB methods emphasize specific land management practices. Neither approach fully captures biodiversity impacts across supply chains. For future studies, it is advisable to (1) model the direct (on-farm) impacts of land management change at the midpoint level; (2) establish cause-effect relationships between key land management practices and biodiversity indicators, while distinguishing between direct (on-site) and indirect (off-site) biodiversity impacts resulting from land management change; (3) characterize land-use intensity levels with specific land management practices and include the positive impacts from agroecological practices. This Review examines LCA methods for biodiversity concerning land management practices and discusses improvements to better account for the biodiversity impacts of agricultural land management

We, the organisers and participants of the 1st European Symposium “Fostering Cultivated Biodiversity through Local Food Policies”, held in Granollers, Spain, on 29–30 April 2025, have jointly prepared this document to issue a call to action to European municipalities and higher levels of governance. In light of the growing unpredictability threatening European food security, in this Manifesto we propose cultivated biodiversity as a key lever for building sustainable and healthy local food systems across Europe
