Evidence on the environmental impacts of organic agriculture – the case of Switzerland
Conclusions
• Organic agriculture overall shows a favorable environmental performance if compared to conventional agriculture
• Organic agriculture has lower yields than conventional agriculture
-- But the environmental performance per kg product is on par
• We need a truly systemic approach:
-- total production of food nutrients from a landscape over a longer time period
-- assess environmental impacts within a regional ecosystem contex

Total Factor Productivity (TFP) serves as a comprehensive metric to evaluate the performance of production systems, offering a unified framework for debates on sustainable agriculture. TFP integrates traditional yield-focused assessments with considerations of positive co-benefits, such as enhanced soil fertility and biodiversity, as well as negative impacts like emissions, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss. This approach aligns with sustainable agricultural systems, including agroecology, regenerative agriculture, and organic farming, which emphasize balanced outputs. These systems aim to achieve reasonable yields while minimizing negative effects and maximizing overall benefits. TFP provides an effective tool for assessing performance within this multidimensional context

This field trial investigates the pre-crop effects of legumes on cereals, specifically focusing on spelt. The trial includes 16 treatments, comparing various mixtures of winter and spring legumes. Triticale is grown in winter as a monocrop, followed by spelt as the subsequent crop, serving as the control and reference. Conducted at two sites with silty loam soil, the trial monitors daily weather conditions. The mean annual temperature at the sites is 9.5°C and 10.7°C, with mean annual precipitation of 858.5 mm and 687.2 mm, respectively. CORE Organic Pleiades network roadmap to 2030 and EU-level recommendations for better alignment of transnational R&I investments
The present document reflects an important turning point in the work of CORE Organic Pleiades Network (CO) that is a continuation of previous four network programme periods implemented under the European Commission’s European Research Area Network (ERA-NET) funding scheme since 2004. Two decades of active transnational cooperation among European ministries and research councils resulted in 8 joint transnational research calls, totalling EUR 61.9 million for organic food and farming research projects. Following the EC decision to end the ERA-NET funding scheme under the Horizon Europe R&I Framework Programme, the CORE Organic (CO) network partners developed further coordination and networking activities as a part of the OrganicTargets4EU project. Under the Green Deal organic targets, the CO network objective is to maintain policy exchange and ensure specific focus on transnational coordination for organic
food and farming research at the European level and beyond. Based on this CO network objective, in the present deliverable, we have included the CORE Organic Pleaides Network Roadmap to 2030 with an Action Plan 2025-2026, the list of committed network members, and at last national,
regional, and EU-level recommendations for better alignment of transnational cooperation and R&I investments
