Romania - Organic sector factsheet
This factsheet provides an overview of the organic agriculture sector in Romania, including farmland area, market trends, and key figures on organic production. It also outlines CAP policy support, detailing financial allocations, eco-schemes, and strategic goals for organic farming. Additionally, it highlights national action plans and support measures for organic aquaculture and market development
Farming system is the main driver of enteric methanogenesis in grass-based veal calves
Developing grass-based veal production from male dairy calves could be a low-input solution for raising such animals, particularly in organic systems. However, the impact of grazing on enteric methane emissions of young animals is not well assessed, yet. The study included three genotypes – Brown Swiss, Limousin × Brown Swiss, and Swiss Fleckvieh – raised in four distinct farming systems: a hay-based indoor system and three pasture-based systems, representing intensive, permanent, and alpine grasslands. While all grazing calves received comparable amounts of maize and alfalfa pellets, and a limited soy-free concentrate, the indoor control group followed a slightly different feeding regimen. Hay was provided ad libitum in all systems. Each genotype × system interaction comprised four male calves, raised together from day of life 90 to 180 in the respective systems. Rumen fluid was sampled by intubation after 11 weeks. In vitro gas production (ml/200 mg DM), absolute methane emissions (mg), and methane yield (mg/ml) were analysed after 24h of incubation at 38°C in a batch system. The time between sampling of the rumen fluid and start of the test run in vitro was different due to physical distances between sites and laboratory. It was included as a correction variable in the model. Analysis revealed a significant impact of the farming system on methanogenesis, whereas genotype effects were marginal and never significant. Total gas production volume was highest in the intensive grassland system and lowest in the alpine system (46.2 ml and 44.6 ml, respectively). Methane production was lowest in the indoor and intensive grassland systems, whereas the permanent and alpine grassland systems produced the highest levels—showing increases of 16% and 8%,
respectively, in methane production (mg) compared to the indoor system. These results show relative differences between systems and genotypes. Scaling to emission values per unit of product is not possible, though. Further research on dietary strategies, economic feasibility, and land use efficiency is necessary to assess the sustainability of grass-based veal production
Plant-associated microbiome dynamics in a strip-cropped field
Diversified cropping systems including intercropping and strip cropping have generally been shown to be highly productive and resilient compared to monocropped systems. Enhanced agronomic and environmental benefits that characterize these systems minimize agrochemical use while maintaining high crop yields and production. While these benefits could be driven by higher microbial diversity sculpted by the distinct crop types, we still have limited insight into how plant microbiomes are assembled in these cropping systems at the field scale. Here, we examined the dynamics and site-specific assembly of soil and phyllosphere microbiomes in a rotational faba bean (FB) (Vicia faba) and spring barley (SB) (Hordeum vulgare) strip field during two cropping seasons. FB and SB were grown in neighbouring 6 m wide strips. Using bacterial 16S and fungal ITS amplicon sequencing, we analysed the microbial communities across gradients from the centre of strips towards the edge of strips, where FB and SB strips met

Driving soils to change: Tyre wear particles modulate microbial-mediated soil functions and performance of vegetable crops
Tyre wear particles (TP) enter soils through various pathways, accumulate over time and can affect plant-soil systems. However, the effects of TP, particularly on the microbiota, are not well understood and the potential risks to soil ecosystems remain uncertain. We added TP at concentrations ranging from 0 % to 3 % (w/w) to a sandy loam soil and conducted an experiment with lettuce and leek. We assessed how TP affect plants, the colonisation of their roots with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), soil enzymatic activities and microbial catabolic profiles. Exposure to 3 % TP reduced root and shoot biomass by 35 % and 23 %, respectively, relative to the control, while lower TP levels showed some stimulating effects. Also, a TP addition of 3 % increased plant copper and zinc concentrations but decreased plant nitrogen. We did not find effects on AMF colonisation, yet, these findings are based on the staining method only and should be studied in more depth using additional methods. Some soil enzymes showed a high sensitivity to even the lowest TP concentrations. Furthermore, in soils containing 3 % TP, we measured a reduction in the microbial biomass carbon (up to −20 %), an increase in the microbial metabolic quotient (up to +62 %), and significant changes in the catabolic capacity of soil microbes. Our data show that TP can affect the microbial basis of the soil food web and specific processes related to soil nutrient and energy flow, with ultimate effects on plants. Although the mechanisms cannot be fully displayed with the data at hand, our study stresses the urgent need to implement measures that reduce TP pollution to safeguard soil quality and allow the production of healthy food crops
Ostertagia ostertagi exposure in dairy cows in the alpine space: implications for region-specific assessments
Pasture-based management of dairy cattle in temperate regions leads to infections with gastrointestinal nematodes, with Ostertagia ostertagi recognised as the most pathogenic species. However, little is known about O. ostertagi exposure in alpine regions. Here, we aimed to explore the O. ostertagi seropositivity in a large sample of dairy cows from two Austrian federal states that differ substantially in herd size, productivity and use of (alpine) pastures, and to assess associations between parasite exposure, milk yield, and farm management factors. Bulk tank milk (BTM) samples from 1241 dairy farms in the federal states of Upper Austria (n = 742) and Tyrol (n = 499), of which the dairy herds comprised a total of 25,985 adult cows, were analysed for anti-O. ostertagi immunoglobulin G at the end of the grazing season 2018. Anti-Ostertagia antibody levels in milk [measured as the optical density (OD) ratio (ODR)] from herds with known grazing were evaluated for associations with production and management data via linear models to (1) evaluate the effect of farm management practices on herd exposure to O. ostertagi, and (2) assess the association of O. ostertagi exposure and management practices with milk production. Of all the investigated herds, 65.3% were positive for O. ostertagi infections (ODR ≥ 0.5), with a mean ODR of 0.59 (25th–75th percentile 0.42–0.75). Herds in Tyrol had higher mean BTM-ODR values (0.73; 25th–75th percentile 0.61–0.87) than those in Upper Austria (0.50; 0.38–0.63); however, alpine grazing was not associated with higher ODR values in either Austrian state. In Upper Austria, organic farming was significantly associated with higher O. ostertagi exposure, whereas in Tyrol, larger herd sizes were linked to increased exposure. Lower milk yield was significantly associated with decreasing cow herd size and organic farming in both federal states, but not with increasing O. ostertagi ODR. Marked differences in the exposure of Austrian dairy cattle to O. ostertagi are likely explained by contrasting grazing management between the investigated states and by specific characteristics of each region. No association between increased parasite exposure and milk yield was observed, highlighting the need for region-specific investigations. Small-scale and/or alpine cattle farming with predominantly dual-purpose breeds requires a tailored risk assessment to support sustainable parasite control strategies

Retrovasjon tar tidligere bruksmetoder i bruk.
