Evaluating SNO+ backgrounds through 222RN assays and the simulation of 13C(a, n)160 reactions during water phase

    No full text
SNO+ is a large multipurpose neutrino detector searching for rare interactions. Some backgrounds come from naturally occurring 222 Rn and its daughters within the 238 U chain. Under development are cryogenic trapping assay systems which will monitor the 222 Rn levels within scintillator, water, N 2 cover gas, and small detector materials. These systems can measure concentrations up to 8×10 −5 Rn atoms/L (1.6 × 10 −17 g 238 U/g LAB) within scintillator, and 4.75×10 −15 g are discussed within. 13 238 U/g H 2 O in water. The status of the assay systems C(α,n) 16 O reactions occur from 222 Rn’s progeny 210 Po, but Monte Carlo simulations predict < 0.4 events within the SNO+ fiducial volume of 5.5 m and 5 - 9 MeV region of interest over a 9 month running period within water

Les processus phonologiques impliquant les groupes consonantiques en position initiale et finale: une étude sur l’articulation et la phonologie chez des enfants francophones et bilingues du nord de l’Ontario

    No full text

Dans une étude de Borglin et Fagerström (2012), un participant souligne l’importance des travaux académiques affirmant: « I guess the formality of academic writing is needed for it to be regarded as scientific » (p. 358).

On Supporting Group Decision Making by a Hybrid Method of the Method of Pairwise Comparisons and the Delphi Method

    No full text
Ranking and prioritization are important endeavors that take place in a multitude of industrial, commercial and professional domains. The Delphi method is a systematic procedure for aggregating experts’ opinions, particularly those that are predicated on qualitative or otherwise judgmental information. The method of pairwise comparisons provides an elegant means by which the qualities of criteria or alternatives can be compared, ranked, quantized and provides methods for the identification and resolution of inconsistencies. This thesis examines and proposes a means by which the two methods can be combined, in order to provide an easy to use system (which is then implemented as a reference implementation) for ranking and prioritization of a number of alternatives that is broadly applicable to any number of ranking and prioritization problems

Aboriginal perspectives understanding and comparing the lived experiences and resilience of aboriginal men and women attending higher education

    No full text
Through an in-depth examination and review of the traumatic impact of colonialism and oppression faced by Aboriginal peoples, trends being to appear within the literature. These trends include the intergenerational cycles that foster negative outcomes for Aboriginal Peoples, specifically for those who were forced to endure the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and sexual abuse within the Residential school system. The survivors of this era experience lifelong trauma which is then passed on through the generations to their children, grand-children, great grand-children etc. The numbers of Aboriginal students attending University level, higher education are increasingly low and the research has indicated that this is, in large part, due to the impact of the residential school system and the outlook that Aboriginal Peoples now have towards the education system. Factors of resiliency both positive and negative are described throughout. Positive resiliency, from a western perspective, include the ability to overcome adversity (Scarpino, 2007). This research project utilizes a qualitative method of open-ended one-on-one interviews with Aboriginal men and women who are students at Laurentian University in order to better understand their lived experiences and the aspects that have fostered positive resiliency for them to pursue higher education.Honours Essa

Human immunodeficiency virus -1 (HIV-1) –Transactivator of transcription protein (Tat) effects on Macrophage polarization

    No full text
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) relies on its encoded proteins to orchestrate cellular mechanisms for its replication and to induce inflammatory responses that recruit and compromise lymphocytes. Among them is the HIV trans-activator protein (Tat). Tat is required for the viral replication and enhances the infection of HIV in the host organism. Tat may also have an impact on the functions of the macrophage, an important player in pathological changes of AIDS patients. Some evidence exists that may suggest a more M2 like behavior of HIV infected macrophage. Tat has been shown to down-regulate P53 in macrophages. HIV infected macrophage had higher amount of arginase and became a major source of HIV viral load in patients with late stage AIDS. In this study, we investigated the possible role of Tat in the functional polarization of macrophages, a process that switches macrophage function between pro- inflammation (M1) and promotion of tissue repair and healing (M2). Effects of Tat on the macrophage were studied with human monocytic THP-1 cells that have been stably transfected with wild type Tat, or N terminus segment of Tat 1-48 aa or C terminus segment of Tat 37-86aa. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an activator of M1 macrophage, was used to activate these THP-1 cells. Exposure to LPS led to significant increase in inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in un-transfected THP-1 cells, GFP transfected cells, and cells with Tat 37-86 aa. However, THP-1 cells expressing wild type Tat or Tat 1-48aa showed no increase in iNOS whereas a rise in arginase was observed in Tat 1-48aa after LPS exposure. We also studied SOCS 1 and SOCS 3 expression and observed a greater SOCS 1 induction only in clones that had elevated iNOS in response to LPS. Wild-type Tat had no effect on SOCS 1 expression and cells with Tat1-48aa showed a decrease in SOCS 1. Cells expressing Tat 1-48aa displayed reduced HDAC 3 and SOCS 3 levels. Our data demonstrated that wild type Tat and Tat 1-48aa may impair or diminish the response of THP-1 cells to LPS. Our data may also suggest that wild- type Tat and Tat1-48aa have conditioned THP-1 cells towards M2 polarization. This may also suggest that cells expressing wild- type Tat or Tat 1-48aa may exhibit M2 behaviours

Bond mean field theory for electron spin resonance frequency shift analysis

    No full text
Electron spin resonance (ESR) is an important experimental technique. A comprehensive theory of ESR has been di cult to establish, and as such several di erent approximations are used to predict and explain experimental results. This thesis applies the bond-mean- eld theory to the problem of ESR frequency shift for the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain with uniaxial exchange anisotropy. We use this theory to calculate the ESR resonance frequency shift as a function of temperature and magnetic eld. We perform numerical calculations using the expression obtained. These results are compared to existing results in the literature; they are in broad agreement with theoretical results such as those of Oshikawa and A eck obtained via bosonisation, but they show discrepancies with experimental results. We agree with the theoretical authors that the discrepancy is due to our use of the simplest-case interaction model

Give me a verb! Give me a noun!: an ERP investigation of perceptual words with ambiguous word classes

    No full text
Previous research has demonstrated that retrieving a verb from memory elicits different neural activity than retrieving a noun, however, what about words that can be both? It has been found that the context surrounding a target word hold primary importance in the classification of a word as being either a verb or a noun in the case of an ambiguous target word. Using Event-Related Potentials as a physiological instrument to measure cognitive processes through the means of a lexical decision task; the current study will examine brain activity when context is manipulated for words that are considered both verbs and nouns. The target words consisted of 5 English words: view, watch, witness, notice, sense. During the task, there were 2 sets of conditions presented to the participants twice. The first condition consisted of the words ‘to’ and ‘the’ preceding the target word in a random order. The second condition consisted of the word ‘this’ preceding or succeeding the target word in a random order. After the completion of all conditions, participants were prompted to complete a counterbalanced 9-point likert scale for each target word. They were asked to rate their opinion of how strongly each word was classified as a verb or a noun. Resulting ERP data was examined for contextual differences across word context category and between regions of interest montages.Honours Essa

The effects of stress on food preferences of high-saccharin and low- saccharin preferring rats

    No full text
High- Saccharin (HiS) and Low- Saccharin (LoS) preferring strains of rats are found to differ in preference for a saccharin solution, as well as reactivity to stress, drug seeking behaviour, and taste preferences. Because of this unique intersection of characteristics these rat strains were ideal for use in this study which examined how stress influences the consumptive behaviour of the HiS versus the LoS lines for flavoured foods instead of flavoured liquids (as used in the previous literature). Predictions were made within a sensation seeking/optimal arousal framework (SS/OA). The fourteen HiS (n= 7) and LoS (n= 7) rats received a restraint stressor for 30 minutes. Their consumptive behaviours were then monitored for 30 minutes. The stressor significantly reduced the consumption of the two lines. However, the taste preferences of the animals were not found to support SS/OA theory. It was posited that the addition of calories to the test foods of the current study influenced the consumption and taste preferences of the HiS and LoS lines in a way that is not predicted by the sensation seeking/ optimal arousal theory
