Determination of the relationship between CD34+ stem cell amount and DMSO in hematopoetic stem cell transplantation
It is important to calculate the CD34+ stem cell (SC) count at the right time in patients with hematological malignancies who will undergo Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT). The amount of SC infused into the patient affects the engraftment time and healing process of the patient. In this study, we aimed to compare which of the DMSO-not removed and DMSO-removed samples showed the CD34 + SC amount more accurately as the SC amount determination method after the SC was dissolved after cryopreservation in patients who will undergo HSCT. A total of 22 patients were included in the study. All 22 patients were transplanted from frozen samples using DMSO. After the SC products were dissolved in a 37 °C water bath, they were washed 2 times and the amount of CD34+ SC was studied from the samples taken by removing DMSO and without removing DMSO. In the findings, the amounts of CD34+ SC studied with both methods were compared. The increase in the number and percentage of CD34+ SC after DMSO-removed was found to be statistically significant both in terms of difference and proportionally, and the calculated effect sizes also showed that the increase was clinically significant (Cohen's d is between 0.43 and 0.677). After thawing the frozen SCs of the patients who will undergo HSCT, the analysis of CD34+ SCs from which DMSO is removed provides a more accurate calculation of the CD34+ SC amount in the AP
Effect of acupressure at PC6 on nausea and vomiting during pregnancy: a randomized controlled trial
Background: Nausea and vomiting are among the most common medical problems during pregnancy, affecting 80% of mothers. Objectives: This study was conducted as a randomized controlled experimental study to determine the effect of acupressure applied by a wristband to the pericardium 6 (PC6) point on nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Methods: The study population consisted of 74 pregnant women between 6-14 weeks of gestation who were experiencing nausea and vomiting. The study data was collected with personal information from the Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis Scale (PUQE). Experimental and control groups were selected by a simple random method. The experimental group wore acupressure wristbands for one week, while the control group did not use any method to alleviate nausea and vomiting. One week later, the PUQE scale was applied to both groups. Results: The acupressure wristbands decreased the nausea and vomiting scores of the pregnant women in the experimental group without statistical significance but did not change the nausea and vomiting scores of the pregnant women in the control group. Conclusion: Acupressure wristbands can be used to prevent nausea and vomiting during pregnancy
Altered gut microbiota in patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease: an age–sex matched case–control study
Objective: The investigations related to how gut microbiota changes the brain-gut axis in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) attract growing interest. We aimed to determine whether gut microbiota is altered in PD patients and whether non-motor symptoms of PD and disease duration had any relation with alterations of microbiota profiles among patients. Methods: Microbial taxa in stool samples obtained from 84 subjects (42-PD patients and 42-healthy spouses) were analyzed using 16S rRNA amplicon-sequencing. Results: We observed a significant decrease of Firmicutes and a significant increase of Verrucomicrobiota at the phylum level. At the family level, Lactobacillaceae and Akkermansiaceae were significantly increased and Coriobacteriales Incertae Sedis were significantly decreased in the PD patients compared to their healthy spouses. Genus level comparison inferred significant increase in abundance only in Lactobacillus while the abundance of Lachnospiraceae ND3007 group, Tyzzerella, Fusicatenibacter, Eubacterium hallii group and Ruminococcus gauvreauii group were all decreased. We determined that the abundance of Prevotella genus decreased, but not significantly in PD patients. In addition, we found differences in microbiota composition between patients with and without non-motor symptoms. Conclusion: We observed differences in gut microbiota composition between PD patients and their healthy spouses. Our findings suggest that disease duration influenced microbiota composition, which in turn influenced development of non-motor symptoms in PD. This study is the first in terms of both gut microbiota research in Turkish PD patients and the probable effect of microbiota on non-motor symptoms of PD.Turkish Scientifc and Technical Council (TÜBITAK-118S704)

Morphological and morphometric variations of the hyoid bone in anatolian population
Objective: The morphological and morphometric variations of the hyoid bone (os hyoideum) are known to be significant in cervical surgeries and also serve as important evidence in forensic cases involving hanging and strangulation. The aim of this study is to investigate the morphological and morphometric differences of the hyoid bone. Methods: Sixty-four adult hyoid bones of unknown age and gender were used in our study. Ethical approval for the study was obtained from the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine Clinical Research Ethics Committee (date/number: 15.12.2021/632888). The bone shape variations were classified into four main groups: D, U, B, and V types according to the morphometric measurements of the hyoid bone. Also the hyoid bones were evaluated based on their symmetry and isometry properties. Morphometric measurements were analyzed for reliability and repeatability using TEM, rTEM, and R tests, with the same person measuring twice. Measurements were calculated using the Image J program. The data were analyzed using SPSS v.21. Results: The percentages of D, U, B, and V types were found to be 53.84%, 23.07%, 15.38%, and 11.53%, respectively. Among the hyoid bones, 34 (53.12%) were found to be asymmetrical, 30 (46.88%) symmetrical, 35 (54.69%) anisometric, and 29 (45.31%) were isometric. Conclusion: Our study’s results indicate that the hyoid bone of Anatolian individuals exhibits morphological differences compared to other populations. Understanding the morphological and morphometric values of the hyoid bone can contribute to clinical and forensic application

Methods: Our study is retrospective and descriptive. In order to reach the postgraduate theses, the Turkish National Thesis Database was searched using the words “geriatrics", "elderly" and "nursing" between September and December 2022. As a result of the inclusion and exclusion criteria determined by the researchers, the sample of the study consisted of 27 postgraduate theses (21 master's and 6 doctorate) studies conducted in the departments of nursing, which were studied on geriatric individuals aged 65 and over with chronic diseases, between 2012-2022, the full text of which could be accessed online. Ethics committee approval was taken for all studies included in this study. Results: It has been observed that the number of postgraduate theses with geriatric/elderly individuals in nursing departments has tended to increase in the last 10 years (2012-2022). It was determined that 77.8% (n=21) of the postgraduate theses were master's and 22.2% (n=6) were doctoral theses. Studies were mostly conducted in the departments of Nursing (44.4%) and Internal Medicine Nursing (40.7%). Diabetes was found to be the most studied chronic disease with 37%. Considering the purpose of the studies, it was determined that 44.4% of the patients' experiences were determined, 18.5% of them were to evaluate the effectiveness of education, and 14.8% of them were to examine the effects of attitudes and behaviours. Conclusion: Among the postgraduate theses, it was determined that the master's theses were mostly descriptive of the current situation, while the doctoral theses were experimental studies that included interventions and included applications to determine patient experiences. In our country, a demographic society structure is formed in which the population of geriatric individuals increases, and chronic diseases increase in parallel. For this reason, it is recommended that more studies be conducted in the field of geriatric nursing and development of care practices specific to geriatric individuals
Huzursuz bacaklar sendromu: Tanıdan tedaviye
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) can be described by an urge to move limbs that typically coincides with an uncomfortable sensation. When at rest or inactivity, signs may start or develop worse; they usually go away when one moves or gets up for a walk. RLS can be both idiopathic or secondary to many kinds of health conditions, such as deficiency of iron, diabetes, obesity, hypothyroidism, and chronic renal failure. At the admission, secondary causes and iron tests, such as transferrin saturation and ferritin, must be evaluated. Assessments should be repeated when symptoms worsen, or when augmentation develops. Augmentation is a significant adverse effect of therapy by levodopa and dopamine agonists. More severe signs, early appearance of symptoms, and spreading of symptoms from the legs to other body parts are indicative of augmentation. Non-pharmacological treatments help some RLS patients control their symptoms. Iron-replacement therapy is a first-line treatment option for patients with indications of low body iron stores. The use of α2δ ligands as initial treatments instead of dopamine agonists has been recommended recently.
Accessory muscles associated with the levator palpebrae superioris muscle in 100 cadavers
Purpose: This study aimed to determine the variations of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle and to reveal its morphological features. Methods: This study conducted on 100 adult orbit cadavers in the Department of Anatomy, Istanbul University, used an exploratory, descriptive research design. The anatomical and morphological variations of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle and its relationship with the superior ophthalmic vein were evaluated. Results: Variations of levator palpebrae superioris muscle were discovered in 11 of 100 orbits. Single (9%), double (1%), and triple (1%) accessory muscle slips were observed. The origin of accessory muscle slips showed variation as the accessory muscle slips originated either from the proximal or distal half of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle. Also, the insertions of accessory muscle slips were variable, as they were inserted into levator aponeurosis, trochlea, lacrimal gland, lateral orbital wall, or the fascia of the superior ophthalmic vein. Conclusions: Accessory muscles associated with levator aponeurosis were found in a significant proportion of cadavers. These muscles may cause confusion in orbital surgery and should be taken into account during surgical planning and orientation in the superior orbit
Trace cadmium determination in lake water matrix by flame atomic absorption spectrometry after manganese ferrite magnetic nanoparticles-based dispersive solid phase extraction
In this study, manganese ferrite magnetic nanoparticles-based dispersive solid phase extraction (MF-MNP-DSPE) was developed for cadmium determination at trace level by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Manganese ferrite-based magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized to be used as solid phase extraction sorbent. All the analytical conditions were optimized by univariate optimization approach to achieve high enrichment factors. Under the optimum conditions, limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) values of the developed method were recorded as 1.3 and 4.3 µg L−1, respectively. Approximately 135-fold improvement in the detection power by the MF-MNP-DSPE-FAAS system was recorded over the traditional FAAS system based on LOD comparison. Recovery experiments were performed to test the applicability/accuracy of the developed method with lake water spiked at different concentrations. Percent recovery values were obtained between 87% and 112% by employing the matrix matching calibration strategy and this showed that the developed method is applicable for the determination of cadmium in lake water samples with high accuracy and precision
The impact of organizational culture on nursing: A comprehensive analysis
In today’s complex and highly competitive healthcare landscape, the role of nurses is paramount, and the impact of organizational culture on their satisfaction and the quality of healthcare they provide cannot be overstated. This study aimed to explore the existing scientific literature on the impact of organizational culture on nursing. This is a bibliographical and descriptive study. Search for articles was carried out in three databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection. using the descriptors: Nurs* and “Organizational Culture” using the Boolean Operator “AND”. The search was refined to include articles published within the last five years to ensure the most current and relevant literature was considered. A total of 20 articles were included. Nurses’ self-assessments of organizational culture in their workplaces have yielded varying results, ranging from “average” to “high”. Notably, studies conducted in South Korea consistently found higher scores in relation-oriented culture and lower scores in task-oriented culture. It was identified that organizational culture significantly influences crucial aspects of the nursing profession, including professionalism, nurse turnover, nurse retention, well-being, workplace challenges, effective healthcare delivery, management, and the role of leadership. Understanding and nurturing a positive and supportive organizational culture is vital for enhancing the quality of healthcare delivery and the job satisfaction and well-being of nurses. Hence, in this complex sector, effective hospital administration and competent nursing management are imperative in fostering an organizational culture that supports nurses' well-being, tackles workplace challenges, and improves healthcare delivery
