    Challenges faced by nurse managers during the COVID-19 pandemic: an integrative review

    Background: Nurses have crucial roles in caring for patients and preventing the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, nurse managers have a prominent role during the pandemic, being responsible for the support and training of the nursing team to ensure quality care. While performing their duties in this time of fear and uncertainty, nurse managers face several challenges. Aim: To identify the challenges faced by nurse managers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: It is an integrative literature review whose search for articles was carried out in Medline, PubMed and Scopus. Qualitative content analysis was used. Results: Twelve primary research studies were included. Four themes emerged: (1) Workplace demands, (2) Impacts on physical and psychological health, (3) Coping measures and resilience and (4) Recommendations to better support nurse managers in times of crisis. Nurse managers had their roles expanded or completely changed, and they experienced many pressures and stressors in the workplace. Nurse managers also faced physical and psychological health problems. Nurse managers drew on experience; management skills; social media applications; support from family, colleagues and hospital administrators; training, and continuing education to solve the problems that emerged due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Organisations should use collaborative, inclusive and participatory practices for better crisis management. Conclusions: Knowing the experiences of nurse managers during the pandemic period may help health institutions and policymakers better prepare for emergencies

    Green synthesized nanoceria applied as a fenton-like catalyst for degrading methylene blue

    Nanomaterials are preferred for scientific studies due to their spectral properties and perfect surface appearance. This study aims to introduce a novel, environmentally friendly, photocatalytic method for degrading methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solutions. With this purpose in mind, the study synthesizes nanoceria particles and coats them with zahter (Thymbra spicata; zahter-coated nanoceria, ZCNC) following the main outlines of green chemistry as characterized by SEM and FTIR analyses. The study proposes this new nanoparticle (with the aid of H2O2 and UV combinations) as an alternative to iron in Fenton-type reactions for enabling MB degradation. The maximum efficiency was observed through the ternary combination of zahter-coated nanoceria, UV light, and H2O2 at 63% concentration. The degradation of the MB solution was achieved by installing a small amount of ZCNC (0.1g), after which the absorbance values were measured at 664 nm. According to the possible reaction kinetics discussed within the study, the reaction rate was calculated at 1.49 × 10-2 min -1, thus enabling a faster reaction for a better evaluation of the reaction mechanism compared to other degradation processes that have been previously investigated

    Exploring different aspects of nursing leadership: An integrative review of qualitative studies

    Context: Leadership is the process of influencing people to achieve common goals. In all nurses’ roles, leadership is emphasized since nurse leaders’ attitudes influence nurses’ job satisfaction and retention and, consequently, the quality of care. Objective: This study aimed to explore the scientific literature concerning different aspects of leadership in nursing. Methods: This is an integrative review of qualitative studies in which four electronic databases (Medline, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar) were searched. Articles published in the last ten years (2013 - 2022) were searched by titles using the descriptors "qualitative," "leadership," and "nursing" linked by the Boolean Operator AND. The search carried out in July 2022 was not limited by the publication language. A total of 63 studies were identified, and 11 original primary research articles were included. The quality of articles was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP). Qualitative content analysis was performed to analyze the obtained data. Results: The results were organized into three categories: (1) the importance of nursing leadership and leaders’ roles; (2) ethical leadership; and (3) nursing leadership education. Personal characteristics of nurse leaders and leadership skills were indicated as factors influencing staff nurses’ attitudes and reflecting on the quality of care. Training in nursing leadership since the early years of nursing education is essential for future nursing leaders. Conclusions: Nurse leaders influence other team members and patients; consequently, nursing leadership impacts the quality of care. Therefore, training on leadership should be addressed in nursing schools in undergraduate and postgraduate courses and health institutions through continuing education

    Comparison of sexual health advices in the first Turkish Bahname of Ottoman Era with current scientific literatures

    The bahnames, an essential part of the Islamic medical corpus, generally address sexuality, sexual behavior, sexual dysfunctions, and protective, supportive and therapeutic applications in this field. Our study investigated the oldest known Turkish bahname, translated by Musa b. Mes'ud during 15th century, in comparison with the current literature. Sexual health advices and treatment modalities in this bahname were evaluated and interpreted within the framework of current knowledge of sexology, urology, and andrology. Although the work mostly mentions supportive and therapeutic practices in sexual health, it also provides advices on sexuality and sexual life. The author recommends many foods and compoun ointments to enhance sexual stamina and avoid erectile dysfunction. In addition, he also tries to find solutions to some other sexual health problems related to men and women. These issues are generally evaluated in the context of health; a religious perspective is also provided when needed. In comparison, a lot of the author's recommendations on sexual health and herbal or animal drugs are consistent with the current literature. Nevertheless, some information and suggestionsmention entirely irrational and unscientific. This study is an original investigation of the first translated bahname into Turkish. There is no other study examining the bahnames with this method. Thus, we believe that our work will be a sig the literature of Turkish-Islamic medical history

    Characterization of bovine bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells and immunostaining of differentiated neurospheres

    Stem cell differentiation has been a key element for the therapeutical applications for various disorders. The novel anti-inflammatory and angiogenic findings and potential applications for both autologous and allogenic studies have emphasized about the usage of mesenchymal stem cells in the clinical trials. The neurosphere differentia-tion studies and their role for peripheral nerve injuries have gained momentum recently. Following study emphasized on the isolation of stem cells from bovine bone marrow and characterization of their mesenchymal potential by PCR followed by their differentiation into mesodermal lineages and into neurospheres under specific induction media. The generated neurospheres were further investigated for their potential expressions of neuroprogenitor markers Sox2, Nestin and neurofilament protein β-III Tubulin by immunofluorescence staining. The results of following study high-light the unique potential of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells for translational research and regenerative therapy in nervous tissue injuries

    Biochemical perspective on Parkinson’s disease

    Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects the nervous system and primarily affects movement. It is characterized by the degeneration and loss of dopamine-producing neurons in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra. The resulting dopamine deficiency in the brain leads to a range of motor symptoms, including tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and postural instability. Parkinson's disease can also cause non-motor symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairment. Parkinson's disease is typically diagnosed in people over the age of 60, but it can also affect younger people. Although there is currently no cure for Parkinson's disease, treatments are available to help manage the symptoms and improve quality of life (Ciofalo et al., 2019)

    Stevioside improves brain oxidant-antioxidant status in overfed zebrafish

    Objective: An excessive buildup of adipose tissue is a defining feature of overnutrition, and a significant fraction of the world’s population suffers from obesity. Overnutrition is associated with the deterioration of mitochondrial functions in the brain in the case of obesity. In this study, we evaluated the effects of stevioside (ST) which is a calorie-free, naturally occurring herbal sweetener made from Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) on the oxidant-antioxidant balance in the brain in cases of overnutrition. Accordingly, the effects of ST consumption on the oxidant-antioxidant balance in the brain was evaluated and determined in a case study of overfeeding adult zebrafish for 15 days. Materials and Methods: Zebrafish were placed in four groups; the control group (C); overfed group (OF); low-dose (1mg/L) ST treated OF group (OF+LDS); and the high-dose ST (5mg/L) treated OF group (OF+HDS). The levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO) were evaluated together with nitric oxide (NO) to determine the oxidant status. The antioxidant status from the activities of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) were determined in brain tissues. Results: The ST treatment decreased the increased LPO and NO levels in overfed zebrafish and increased SOD and GST activities in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion: ST exerted an antioxidant effect on the possible damage mechanisms that could occur in the brain in case of overnutrition by decreasing oxidative stress and improving the antioxidant enzyme activities.Marmara University Scientific Research Projects Commission -- Grant number: SAG-C-YLP-100719-026
