The mediating role of self-compassion in the relationship between anxiety sensitivity and health concern
Bu çalışma yetişkinlerde kaygı duyarlılığı ile sağlık kaygısı arasındaki ilişkiyi ve bu ilişki için aracı olarak öz-şefkat kavramını inceleyerek kavramın aracı rolünü ortaya koymayı hedeflemektedir. Bu hedef doğrultusunda, araştırmaya Ekim 2023 ile Aralık 2023 tarihleri arasında 18 yaş ve üzeri 290 yetişkin katılımcı dâhil edilmiştir. Katılımcıların yaş ortalaması 32.11’dir (S = 15.06). Katılımcılara uygulanan ölçek seti katılımcıların sosyodemografik bilgilerini incelemek amacıyla Sosyodemografik Bilgi Formu, kaygı duyarlılıklarını ölçmek amacıyla Kaygı Duyarlığı İndeksi, sağlık kaygısı düzeylerini değerlendirmek amacıyla Sağlık Anksiyetesi Ölçeği ve öz-şefkat düzeylerini değerlendirmek amacıyla Öz-Duyarlık Ölçeği’nden oluşmaktadır. Araştırmanın değişkenleri olan kaygı duyarlılığı, sağlık kaygısı ve öz-şefkat değişkenleri arasındaki ilişkisel sonuçlar istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmuştur. Buradan hareketle gerçekleştirilen kaygı duyarlılığının sağlık kaygısı üzerindeki yordayıcı etkisinde öz-şefkatin aracı rolünün sınandığı hiyerarşik çoklu doğrusal regresyon analizinin sonucuna göre kaygı duyarlılığının sağlık kaygısı üzerindeki yordayıcı etkisinde öz-şefkatin kısmi aracı etki gösterdiği bulunmuştur. Araştırmanın bulguları literatür kapsamında tartışılmıştır. Son olarak, mevcut çalışmanın literatüre katkısı ile çalışmanın sınırlılıkları ve ilerideki çalışmalar için öneriler sunulmuştur.This study aims to examine the relationship between anxiety sensitivity and health concern together with the concept of self-compassion as a mediator for this relationship. In line with this purpose, 290 adult participants aged 18 and over are included in the research between October 2023 and December 2023. The average age of the participants is 32.11 (SD = 15.06). The scale set applied to the participants consists of the Sociodemographic Information Form to examine the sociodemographic information of the participants, the Anxiety Sensitivity Index to measure their anxiety sensitivity, the Health Concern Scale to evaluate their health concern levels, and the Self-Compassion Scale to evaluate their self-compassion levels. The correlational results between the variables of the study, namely anxiety sensitivity, health concern and self-compassion, were found to be statistically significant. Based on the results of the hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis, which tested the mediating role of self-compassion on the predictive effect of anxiety sensitivity on health concern, it was found that self-compassion had a partial mediating role on the predictive effect of anxiety sensitivity on health concern. The findings of the research are discussed in the context of literature. Finally, the contribution of the current study to the literature, the limitations of the study and suggestions for future studies are presented
Natural gas-fueled HCCI engine performance and emission analysis andcomparison with SI and spark-assisted operations
The homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine is a promising technology in terms of both soot and NOx emission. Natural gas (NG) is advantageous especially for HCCI engines with its single stage combustion, low C/H ratio, and high octane number. Since the main challenge of HCCI technology is stability and transient operations, using HCCI for constant speed operations may be advantageous. In this study, a CI diesel engine, which is used as a generator at constant speed, was modified and converted into an NG-fuelled, SI engine. Then, the engine was supplied with NG for SI, HCCI, and spark-assisted HCCI experiments. Spark-assisted operations were executed by using 3, 5, and 7 degree ignition advance values to assist HCCI combustion. In-cylinder pressure variations, exhaust temperature, specific fuel consumption, and emission values were investigated for comparison of different strategies. Experimental results showed that using the HCCI strategy and retardation of ignition advance of spark-assisted HCCI operations reduced maximum pressure. Therefore, these strategies improved NOx emissions, while HC emissions were slightly increased. The spark-assisted HCCI strategy improves the stability of operation while increasing CO emission. The specific fuel consumption value of HCCI was slightly higher than that of SI operation, while it was lower than spark-assisted strategies
Whole genome expression analysis identifies multiple targeted ıntegrative effects of polyphenol-rich propolis on HER-2-Positive breast cancer cell line
Natural products have been focused by researchers due to their important anticarcinogenic characteristics in the treatment of cancer with the slightest side effects possible. Propolis is one of the most prominent candidates among these natural products in terms of its anticancer features. In this study we aim to research the effects of Anatolian propolis on ER/PR-, HER-2/neu+ human breast cancer cell line SK-BR-3 with intent to clarify the molecular mechanism propolis in HER+ breast cancers in overview of whole genomic expression for the first time via a microarray experiment. Afterwards, microarray data was validated via real time PCR with the selected genes. After performing bioinformatic analysis via GeneSpring Software and String analysis, a 50 µg/mL dose of propolis affected several pathways of HER-2 positive breast cancer cells including cell cycle, DNA repair and apoptosis especially at 48th hour exposure. In contrast, after exposure to 50 µg/mL dose of propolis, up-regulated genes were detected at diverse pathways such as immune response, cell migration regulation, organization of cell-cell adhesion, etc. For this reason, we proposed that polyphenol-rich propolis can be used in the treatment of HER-2 positive breast cancer with characteristics of less toxic than the current treatment methods.Istanbul Development Agency -- ISTKA/2010/KBO-6
Deep-learning model for assessing difficulty in localizing impacted canines
AIM or PURPOSE The aim of this study is to examine if an artificial intelligence algorithm can be used for identifying the bucco-palatinal position of the maxillary impacted canine from the panoramic X-rays. MATERIALS and METHOD A total of 810 panoramic x-rays were obtained from the archive of University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics. X-rays included cases with unilateral/bilaterally impacted canines. We used a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to forecast where the impacted canines crown would be situated. CNNs excel at classifying images as they can autonomously and flexibly grasp hierarchies of features, from input images. The implementation of the proposed deep learning model has been done using the Python programming language and libraries (TensorFlow and Numpy). The dataset that was used to train the proposed model categorized into buccal, middle, and palatinal positioned samples. These samples are mainly 2D panoramic X-rays combined with clinical information about the location of the canine. The expectation from the model is to determine the location of the crown of the maxillary-impacted canine. The model's prediction of the impacted canine's location was assessed in bucco-palatinal directions. RESULTS The proposed deep learning model predicts the position of the impacted canine in the buccal, middle, or palatinal position with 68% accuracy. CONCLUSION(S) This multidisciplinary research study developed a deep learning model to automate the detection and positioning of impacted canines on panoramic dental X-rays. Lastly, further research is required to refine the model for clinical implementation and to explore its integration into routine orthodontic practic
Detection of virulence factors of Enterococcus faecalis isolated from the urinary system and evaluation of antibiotic resistance
Aims: Enterococci, which are among the leading causes of nosocomial infections, are opportunistic pathogens and cause urinary tract infections most frequently. The frequency of isolation increases especially in patients with urinary system anomalies or urological interventions. Although various virulence factors play a role in the pathogenesis of infections caused by enterococci, cytolysin, hemolysin and enterococcal surface protein (ESP) are among the frequently investigated virulence factors. In this study; It was aimed to investigate the relationship between the presence of virulence factors and antibiotic resistance in Enteroccus faecalis (E. faecalis) strains isolated from urine samples, as well as the effect of urinary catheter use on these factors. Methods: 100 strains isolated from urine samples sent to İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine Medical Microbiology Laboratory and identified as E. faecalis with the VITEK 2 (biomerioux-France) GP identification kit were included in the study. Hemolysin and gelatinase, virulence factors, were determined phenotypically. The presence of the ESP gene was investigated by PCR using ESP11 and ESP12 primers. Antibiotic sensitivities were studied by disk diffusion and gradient strip methods, and the results were evaluated in accordance with CLSI and EUCAST recommendations. Results: Antibiotic resistance rates were found to be 2%, 31%, 1%, 22%, 37% for ampicillin, norfloxacin, nitrofurantoin, high-level gentamicin (HLG) and high-level streptomycin (HLS), respectively, while no strains resistant to vancomycin, linezolid and tigecycline were detected. When evaluated in terms of virulence factors; It was determined that 82% of the strains produced gelatinase, 67% produced ESP, and 35% produced hemolysin. No virulence factor was detected in eight strains. Conclusion: In our study, no significant relationship was found between the presence of virulence factors and antibiotic resistance and catheter application. However, since the most detected gelatinase and ESP are virulence factors that have the ability to colonize and form biofilms on abiotic surfaces, it is thought that minimizing catheterization practices may contribute to the prevention of UTIs that may develop with enterococci
Kök hücre CD45/34 floresan yoğunluğunun 65 yaş altı ve üstü hastalarda kök hücre mobilizasyonu ile karşılaştırılması
In our research, we attempted to compare CD45/34 MFI (Mean Fluorescent Intensity) in patients younger and over 65 years of age with hematopoietic stem cell mobilization (HSCM).The research involved a group of 76 individuals who had different types of cancer and were identified at the Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) Unit of Anadolu Medical Center Hospital from 2015 to 2016. To mobilize HSCs, participants were administered daily granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) (10 µg/kg/day) under the skin for 7-8 days. Calculating the appropriate level of peripheral blood (PB) CD34+ took into account the patients' WBC (White Blood Cell) counts. Our research revealed that HSCM patients above 65 had statistically greater CD45/34 MFI values than those under that age. Although the age factor for HSCM is important, according to our findings, age is not seen as a negative mobilization factor for HSCM in patients aged 65 and over, and should be supported by larger studies. Our research revealed that patients over 65 who underwent HSCM had statistically greater CD45/34 MFI values than younger patients. Given the decline in SC production observed in individuals aged 65 and above, along with the potential for other accompanying diseases, our results hold promise for elderly patients. However, it is important to validate these findings through multicenter studies with a larger patient population, while also taking into account the presence of other subsequent diseases in the patients under observation.Araştırmamızda, hematopoietik kök hücre mobilizasyonu (HKHM) uygulanan 65 yaş altı ve üstü hastalarda CD45/34 MFI (Ortalama Floresan Yoğunluğu) değerlerini karşılaştırmayı amaçladık. 2015-2016 yılları arasında Anadolu Sağlık Merkezi Hastanesi Kemik İliği Transplantasyonu (KİT) Ünitesi'nde farklı kanser türlerine sahip 76 kişilik bir grupla çalıştık. HKH'leri harekete geçirmek için katılımcılara 7-8 gün boyunca cilt altından günlük granülosit koloni uyarıcı faktör (G-CSF) (10 µg/kg/gün) uygulandı. Uygun periferik kan (PK) CD34+ seviyesinin hesaplanmasında hastaların WBC (Beyaz Kan Hücresi) sayıları dikkate alınmıştır. Araştırmamız 65 yaş üstü HKHM hastalarının bu yaşın altındakilere kıyasla istatistiksel olarak daha yüksek CD45/34 MFI değerlerine sahip olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. HKHM için yaş faktörü önemli olmakla birlikte, bulgularımıza göre 65 yaş ve üzeri hastalarda yaş HKHM için olumsuz bir mobilizasyon faktörü olarak görülmemekte olup daha büyük çalışmalarla desteklenmelidir. Glycosylated zinc(II) phthalocyanine photosensitizer: Synthesis, photophysical properties and in vitro photodynamic activity on breast cancer cell line
Breast cancer is a common type of cancer among women worldwide. Triple negative breast cancer is a highly aggressive subtype of breast cancer and accounts for approximately 24% of all identified breast cancer cases. In triple negative breast cancer, the therapeutic approach options are very limited. In this study, 4-[2′,3′,5′,6′-tetrafluoro-4′-(1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-α-d-glucofuranosyl)benzyloxy]phthalonitrile and its peripherally tetra substituted zinc phthalocyanine derivatives are reported for the first time. Photophysical and photochemical properties of the glycosylated zinc(II) phthalocyanine derivative were investigated for its suitability for use as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy. The fluorescence (ΦF: 0.089), singlet oxygen (Φd: 0.45) and photodegradation quantum yields (Φ∆: 6.07×10−5) of this compound were carried out in N,N-dimethylformamide. The in vitro photodynamic activities of this compound against MDA-MB-231 cells were also studied. Cytotoxicity analysis in this cell lines was performed by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) method. Cytotoxicity test was applied on cell lines of MDA-MB-231 and HUVEC. The IC50 value is determined for glycosylated zinc(II) Pc derivative.Istanbul Technical Universit
Distribution of branches of anterior choroidal artery in the uncus: An anatomical study
The aim of our study was to examine the relationship between uncus and uncal branches of anterior choroidal artery (AChA) and to observe the morphological and morphometric features of these branches. 124 hemispheres from 62 fresh cadavers were included in the study. Measurement of the length of AChA and the distances of the uncal branches to the origin of AChA were measured by ImageJ software. Morphological variations of uncal branches originating from AChA were observed. The length of AChA was found as mean 26.24 ± 4.34 mm. It was determined that the average distance of these uncal branches arising from the AChA was 13.48 ± 7.31 mm. In 4 out of 124 AChAs, no branches were observed. 594 branches originating from 120 were detected. 130/594 branches appeared to be terminal branches. AChAs of 80/120 hemispheres have been reported to have uncal branches. Thirty of 130 uncal branches were observed to originate as the first branch of AChA. It was found that uncal branches may originate from AChA with a variability between 1 and 4. When evaluated according to the origin of each branch from the AChA, it was observed that the uncal branches originated from the midpoint of the AChA on average. Also, in 64 hemispheres, morophological variations were detected regarding the origin of uncal branches. We believe that the morphological and morphometric data we obtained from the uncal branches of the AChA are of clinical importance in terms of understanding this complex region and minimizing errors in surgical procedures

Self-regulation and psychological resilience as predictors of the academic self-efficacy of university students
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of the self regulation and psychological resilience levels of university students on their academic self-efficacy. The sample of the correlational study consisted of a total of 520 university students, 414 female and 106 male. The Self-Regulation Scale, the Brief Resilience Scale, and the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale were used to collect data. In the study, independent groups t-test was applied to determine the differences between genders regarding the variables, Pearson Correlation Analysis was applied to examine the correlation between variables, and Hierarchical Regression Analysis was applied to examine its prediction. It was determined that the psychological resilience levels of the participants varied based on their genders, while their self-regulation and self-efficacy levels did not differ based on the gender variable. Self-regulation and psychological resilience were found to be associated with academic self-efficacy, where self-regulation and psychological resilience together predicted academic self-efficacy
