    No full text
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the presence and morphological and morphometric characteristics of the distal radius's external groove (EG) and bony ridge, which play a potential role in the pathogenesis and treatment difficulties of De Quervain's tenosynovitis. Methods: The osseous anatomy of the distal radius was analyzed in detail on a total of 103 dry bone specimens (49 left and 54 right) obtained from the Department of Anatomy, Istanbul University, Turkiye. The frequency and morphology of the EG were analyzed. The EGs were categorized as Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 with two EGs, one EG with depth, and an additional EG without depth, respectively. Finally, flat areas without clear groove boundaries were classified as Type 4. Results: The analyses showed variations in the morphology and dimensions of the EG and bony ridge. A total of 110 EGs were detected in 103 radii examined. Type 1, Type 2, Type 3 and Type 4 EGs were reported in 30 bones (30%), 38 bones (38%), 12 bones (12%) and 23 bones (23%), respectively. The depth of the EG of Type 1 was 0.26 ± 0.23 mm and 0.22 ± 0.16 mm on the lateral and medial sides, respectively. Also, the depth of the Type 2 was calculated as 0.49 ± 0.37 mm. Conclusion: The osseous variations of the distal radius are critical anatomical factors contributing to the pathogenesis of De Quervain's tenosynovitis and difficulties in the treatment process. It is essential to recognize these variations to improve diagnostic accuracy and optimize therapeutic interventions

    No full text
Background: Pain and anxiety during dental procedures remain major challenges in pediatric dentistry, particularly during local anesthesia administration. Aim: This study compared the effectiveness of digital anesthesia systems versus conventional infiltration and mandibular block techniques in managing pain, anxiety, and behavioral responses in pediatric dental patients. Design: Seventy-nine children aged 6–12 were randomly assigned to receive anesthesia via digital anesthesia system (DAS), infiltration, or mandibular block. Pain was assessed using the Wong-Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale (WBFRPS), anxiety via the Modified Child Dental Anxiety Scale (MCDAS), and behavioral responses through the FLACC scale. Statistical analyses included ANOVA, Kruskal–Wallis, and chi-square tests (p<0.05). Results: Children in the DAS group reported significantly lower pain scores during needle insertion, anesthetic delivery, and treatment. Post-treatment MCDAS scores decreased significantly in the DAS group, especially for items related to “tooth exami nation,” “filling,” and “gingival injection.” FLACC results also indicated more favorable behavioral responses—such as relaxed facial expressions and absence of crying—in the digital group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Digital anesthesia appears to be a highly effective alternative to conventional techniques for minimizing pain, reducing dental anxiety, and improving behavioral cooperation in pediatric patients, supporting its broader implementation in clinical practice

This study aimed to examine the relationship between perceived parenting styles and test anxiety levels among 8th grade students. The research was designed within the framework of the relational survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, and the sample consisted of 318 students studying in 10 public secondary schools in Eyüpsultan district of Istanbul during the 2024–2025 academic year. Data were collected through the Parental Consent Form, Demographic Information Form, Parental Attitude Scale (PAS), and Westside Test Anxiety Scale (WTAS). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0, and independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression tests were conducted. The results revealed that female students experienced significantly higher levels of test anxiety compared to male students. Correlation analysis showed significant negative relationships between test anxiety and the dimensions of acceptance-interest and psychological autonomy. Multiple regression analysis indicated that only the psychological autonomy dimension was a significant predictor of test anxiety. No significant differences were found in test anxiety levels according to different types of 3 parental attitudes. These findings demonstrate that students’ test anxiety is significantly associated with the psychological autonomy and acceptance they perceive from their parents. The results are consistent with previous studies in the literature, showing that democratic parenting styles and psychologically supportive approaches have a reducing effect on test anxiety. In this regard, the study contributes to the understanding of psychosocial factors influencing test anxiety. Based on the findings, it can be suggested that strengthening guidance and counseling services, expanding parental awareness programs, and encouraging teachers to collaborate with families are crucial steps in reducing students’ test anxiety. Furthermore, parents adopting approaches that provide greater psychological autonomy and acceptance may help students cope more effectively with test anxiety.

Comparison of short- and long-term outcomes of diode laser vs. crystallized phenol treatment for pilonidal sinus disease: A propensity score-matched multicentre study

    No full text
Aim: Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) primarily affects young adults; rapid recovery is essential and yet lacks a standardized treatment approach. While excisional techniques delay recovery, minimally invasive options like laser ablation and phenol application are gaining interest, yet comparative long-term evidence is scarce. This study compared short- and long-term outcomes of laser versus phenol treatment in PSD. Method: In this multicentre retrospective cohort study (Nov. 2017–Sep. 2024), patients treated with laser or phenol were included. 1:3 propensity score matching using the nearest neighbour algorithm was performed based on age, gender, prior surgical history and year of operation. Categorical variables were analysed using chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests, whereas continuous variables were compared using Student's t-test or Mann– Whitney U test depending on distribution normality. Results: Out of 897 eligible patients, 644 were included (median age: 26 years, body mass index [BMI]: 26.2 kg/m2 , male-to-female ratio: 4:1). The number of sinuses/pits was 2–3 in both groups. Operating time was significantly longer in the laser group. Complications occurred in 6.8% of laser patients, whereas none were reported in the phenol group. Pain scores were higher in the laser group (2 [1–3] vs. 1 [0–2]). Median follow-up was 45 months (laser) and 40 months (phenol). Return to daily activities was delayed in the laser group, whereas complete healing was slower in the phenol group. Readmission, recurrence and recovery rates were comparable (85%–86%). Conclusion: Both treatments demonstrated low complication and recurrence rates with high recovery rates. Laser favoured faster healing and fewer sessions, whereas phenol allowed for shorter procedures and earlier return to daily life

The rapid development of technology in recent years has also affected the healthcare sector, leading to numerous digital health services that facilitate the lives of both healthcare providers and recipients. One of these services is the analysis of individuals’ nutritional status and approaches to food through the evaluation of facial morphometry and expression. This study aims to examine the usage possibilities of artificial intelligence-based digital measurement techniques such as facial morphometry and facial expression analysis in food and nutrition sciences. For this purpose, articles published in PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were reviewed, and this approach was evaluated in terms of potential effectiveness, reliability, and ethical considerations. Facial morphometry is a technique that enables the digital modeling of facial structure and provides clues about an individual’s dietary pattern through specific anatomical landmarks. This analysis can perform remote nutritional screening, especially for individuals at high risk of malnutrition living in physically inaccessible regions. Facial expression analysis can be utilized in the food industry to measure consumers’ emotional responses during product development processes objectively. This way, producers can anticipate consumer reactions and make strategic decisions based on emotional data. This system is commonly used in neuromarketing and supports optimizing product design, packaging, sensory properties, and marketing strategies. However, confounding factors such as age, ethnicity, growth phases, facial hair, and aesthetic surgeries, which may be influenced by nutritional status, should be considered. Moreover, potential data privacy issues, ethical principles, and commercialization must be addressed. Therefore, more stable and secure digital applications, as well as further studies to validate these tools, are needed. In the future, digital biomarker-based approaches like facial analysis are expected to gain prevalence and contribute to the diagnosis and management of nutritional issues and advancements in personalized nutrition and consumer behavior studies

Comparing the effects of halloysite nanotubes and precipitated calcium carbonate nanoparticles on the environmental stress cracking resistance and mechanical properties of polycarbonate

    No full text
Polycarbonate (PC) is a versatile and amorphous engineering thermoplastic used in various areas due to its exceptional me-chanical and thermal properties. However, its susceptibility to environmental stress cracking limits its industrial application inchemically aggressive environments. This study investigates the effects of incorporating surface-modified halloysite nanotubes(HNTs) and precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) as nanofillers on the mechanical properties and environmental stress cracking(ESC) resistance of PC. PC nanocomposites were prepared with varying filler concentrations (1%, 3%, and 5% by weight) usingtwin-screw extruder and injection molding devices. Comprehensive mechanical characterization, including three-point bending, Charpy impact toughness, and Shore D hardness tests, revealed that introducing 1 wt% of HNT optimally balances stiffness, toughness, and ESC resistance. PCC, on the other hand, significantly improved processability but demonstrated poor ESC perfor-mance, with samples failing within an hour in methanol immersion tests. ESC resistance testing in methanol and sodium laurylether sulfate (SLES) solutions confirmed the superior performance of HNT-reinforced PC nanocomposites. Scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM) analyses provided insights into filler-matrix interactions and crack propagation mechanisms. These findingsoffer valuable guidance for the development of PC nanocomposites tailored for automotive, electronics, and chemical processingindustries

    No full text
An environmentally friendly and simple method was developed for the simultaneous separation and determination of Rhodamine B (RhB) and Rhodamine 6 G (Rh6G) in red pencil samples by vortex assisted microextraction using NADES (Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent). A two-phase system was established using lactic acid-based DES (Deep Eutectic Solvent) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) for the extraction of RhB and Rh6G. In method optimization, sample amount, pH, DES type, DES volume, solvent type and solvent volume parameters were investigated. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) values were 4.13, 5.03 and 12.5, 15.3 µg/mL for RhB and Rh6G, respectively. The correlation coefficients obtained at concentrations ranging from 1–12 µg/mL are 0.9973 and 0.9985. Red pencil samples were spiked at two different concentrations (3–5 µg/mL). The recovery values obtained were in the range of 84.7%-107.4%. The relative standard deviation (RSD) values of the developed method are in the range of 2.77%-5.45%, indicating that the method is reproducible. The results showed that the developed microextraction method can be success fully applied for the separation and determination of RhB and Rh6G from red pencil samples
