Political Conflict and Corporate Policies: Evidence from the Basque Country

    No full text
This paper examines how political conflict affects corporate policies focusing on the Spanish Basque Country. We exploit the announcement by the Basque nationalist terrorist group ETA of the definitive cessation of its armed and extortion activities as an exogenous shock to the exposure of firms in the Basque Country and Navarre to extortion risk. We find that, following the announcement, firms in these regions significantly increase their cash holdings and exhibit higher cash flow sensitivity of cash. They also reduce investment in fixed assets and rely less on short-term debt, consistent with a shift away from strategic liquidity minimization under extortion risk. Finally, firm performance improves. Overall, the results suggest that political conflict distorts cash management, financing choices, and investment decisions

    Residual Prophet Inequalities

    No full text
We introduce a variant of the classic prophet inequality, called \emph{residual prophet inequality} (RPI). In the RPI problem, we consider a finite sequence of nn nonnegative independent random values with known distributions, and a known integer 0kn10\leq k\leq n-1. Before the gambler observes the sequence, the top kk values are removed, whereas the remaining nkn-k values are streamed sequentially to the gambler. For example, one can assume that the top kk values have already been allocated to a higher-priority agent. Upon observing a value, the gambler must decide irrevocably whether to accept or reject it, without the possibility of revisiting past values. We study two variants of RPI, according to whether the gambler learns online of the identity of the variable that he sees (FI model) or not (NI model). Our main result is a randomized algorithm in the FI model with \emph{competitive ratio} of at least 1/(k+2)1/(k+2), which we show is tight. Our algorithm is data-driven and requires access only to the k+1k+1 largest values of a single sample from the nn input distributions. In the NI model, we provide a similar algorithm that guarantees a competitive ratio of 1/(2k+2)1/(2k+2). We further analyze independent and identically distributed instances when k=1k=1. We build a single-threshold algorithm with a competitive ratio of at least 0.4901, and show that no single-threshold strategy can get a competitive ratio greater than 0.5464

    No full text

    Surveillance Pricing and Personal Information

    No full text
International audienceSurveillance pricing, or personalized pricing, is based on what a seller knows about a potential buyer. Thus, it is based on personal information used to customize pricing and maximize revenue. Typically, one thinks of such practices as being regulated by consumer protection or competition law. However, because of the importance of personal data to the practice, data privacy issues must be managed. After reviewing recent FTC work on the issue and reminding the reader of the possibility of State action, this study turns to the European Union and its regulation of automated decision-making and profiling as an example of how surveillance pricing can be regulated

Effective Sustainable Entrepreneurship in Japanese Organisations

    No full text
International audienceThis study investigates the influence of sustainability practices on the adaptability of Japanese firms in international business environments. Utilising a sample of 384 Japanese firms, with participation from two board members and two marketing department members each, the study aggregates 1,536 observations to analyse the relationship dynamics. Through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and regression analysis, the study demonstrates that the business sustainability adaptability method (BSAM) significantly enhances Japanese entity adaptability (JEA), with communication (COM) and adaptation level of globalisation (ALG) serving as critical moderators. Comparative insights highlight the distinctive sustainability approaches between Japanese firms and their global counterparts, offering theoretical and practical implications for international business strategy. This research enriches the discourse within resource-based view, institutional theory, network theory, and stakeholder theory, positioning sustainability as a strategic imperative in global competitiveness

    No full text
International audienceThis article examines how hospital workers engage in embodied mobilizations drawing on the life-affirming power of death and love to resist the demise of the French public hospital system. Drawing on Butler’s work on “What is a livable life” (2022a, 2022b) and Notes toward a performative theory of assembly (2015), the study analyses a four-year data collection of Facebook posts, from two activist collectives of hospital workers. Our findings highlight three forms of ethical resistance. First, hospital workers mobilize the symbolism of death to denounce the erosion of public healthcare infrastructure and to urge the public to help save it. Second, they use this symbolism to shed light on the precariousness of their working conditions and to elicit compassionate care from citizens. Third, they make the symbolism of love for public healthcare visible, prompting reflection on the importance of public service values in a society rooted in solidarity and mutual care. This work contributes to the literature at the intersection of social mobilization and ethics of care: first, it brings to the front death and love as symbols that illuminate the radical political potential of care in social movements; second, it advances the theoretical construct of “ethics of publicness.

Technology Shocks, Directed Technical Progress and Climate Change

    No full text
National audienceTechnical progress is considered a key element in the ght against climate change. It may take the form of technological breakthroughs, that is, shocks that induce signicant leaps in the stock of knowledge. We use an endogenous growth framework with directed technical change to analyze the climate impact of such shocks. Two production subsectors coexist: one subsector is fossil-based, using a non-renewable resource, and yields carbon emissions; the other subsector uses a clean, renewable resource. At a given date, the economy benets from an exogenous technology shock. We fully characterize the general equilibrium and analyze how the shock modies the economys trajectory. The overall e¤ect on carbon emissions basically depends on the substitutability between the production subsectors, the initial state of the economy, and the nature and size of the shock. We notably show that green technology shocks induce higher short-term carbon emissions when the two subsectors are gross complements, but also in numerous cases when they are gross substitutes

    No full text
