An Overview of Biodiesel Production via Heterogeneous Catalysts: Synthesis, Current Advances, and Challenges
International audienceBiodiesel, a renewable and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels, has attracted significant attention due to its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, high production costs and complex processing remain challenges. Heterogeneous catalysts have shown promise in overcoming these barriers by offering benefits, such as easy separation, reusability, low-cost raw materials, and the ability to reduce reaction times and energy consumption. This review evaluates key classes of heterogeneous catalysts, such as metal oxides, ion exchange resins, and zeolites, and their performance in transesterification and esterification processes. It highlights the importance of catalyst preparation methods, textural properties, including surface area, pore volume, and pore size, activation techniques, and critical operational parameters, like the methanol-to-oil ratio, temperature, time, catalyst loading, and reusability. The analysis reveals that catalysts supported on high surface area materials often achieve higher biodiesel yields, while metal oxides derived from natural sources provide cost-effective and sustainable options. Challenges, such as catalyst deactivation, sensitivity to feedstock composition, and variability in performance, are discussed. Overall, the findings underscore the potential of heterogeneous catalysts to enhance biodiesel production efficiency, although further optimization and standardized evaluation protocols are necessary for their broader industrial application.</div

Microbial impact on the volatolomic profile of fermented milks: a case study with the application of industrial starter cultures
International audienceIn the dairy industry, a considerable and growing interest is given to the aroma of yogurt and fermented milks (FMs), and the capability of lactic acid bacteria, applied as starter cultures, to naturally improve flavor characteristics. This case study aimed to characterize volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in fermented milks obtained by using industrial starters, either individual or in mix, composed of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (LB) and/or Streptococcus thermophilus (ST), with the aim to elucidate the impact of each single strain within the same species in the complexity of the microbial communities. Thus, 33 different VOCs, including ketones, acids, aldehydes, alcohols, esters and aromatic compounds were identified through headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled to GC-MS. Only LB produced acetaldehyde (green apple-like) and 2-nonanol (musty), whilst in ST-FM acetic acid (vinegar like), diacetyl (buttery), 2,3-pentanedione (sweet), acetoin (creamy), and hexanoic acid (pungent) were higher compared to LB-FM. Depending on the single strain and their different combinations, noticeable differences in the VOCs profile were observed, showing that, the selection of the proper combinations of ST and LB strains to obtain FMs with a specific final VOCs profile is a key aspect in the dairy industry sector
A comprehensive bibliometric analysis of research on health and environmental impacts of particle emissions from wood combustion in residential heating
International audienceWood is the first and continues to be an important renewable energy source in residential heating. Transition to wood-based energy production has been supported by countries due to climate policies and rising costs of other energy sources. However, small-scale wood combustion releases harmful pollutants, including fine particles, some of which have undefined adverse health and environmental impacts. Researchers used different methods to assess the harmful effects of wood combustion. Since this is a multidisciplinary topic with various interconnected areas, our objective is to conduct a bibliometric analysis to highlight the main research axis and its significance. It is expected that it could prominently contribute to the comprehensive understanding of knowledge in this field and pave the way for future research directions. To this end, a visual-quantitative analysis approach with the identification of publication directions over the last two decades is adopted. The related scientific literature was drawn from Scopus and an in-depth scientific mapping analysis was performed. Our bibliometric results highlight that residential wood combustion (RWC) poses serious risks to human health and contributes to climate change, including decreased life expectancy, elevated cancer risk, and escalated global temperatures. Emerging research includes human health-related risk assessment, brown carbon light absorption, and chemical composition. The lack of a link between health effects and chemical composition of particle emissions was observed. Therefore, future research should aim to implement an integrated assessment of RWC particles’ properties, alongside the parallel development of emission-health risk factors, to link emissions with impacts and guide targeted mitigation strategies.
The Dairy Health Manager (DHM) simulator, developed since 2015 by UMR BIOEPAR, models health and reproduction management in dairy herds. It assesses the impact of management strategies on disease occurrence, input consumption, animal performance, and economic outcomes. Currently in a pre-maturation phase, the goal is to strengthen reliability before transferring the tool to socio-economic partners (pharmaceutical companies, cooperatives, veterinarians). However, the model’s complexity and stochastic nature introduce significant uncertainties. A sensitivity analysis using traditional methods (Morris, Sobol) and newer ones (HSIC) was conducted, but applying them to such a large-scale model remains difficult to interpret. The report suggests exploring new approaches, collaborating with sensitivity analysis experts, and further developing the HSIC method, considered promising despite its initial limitations.
National audienceHuman exposure to contaminants, including pesticides, is generally estimated using indirect methods. Conventional biomonitoring methods remain focused on a limited number of known substances, leaving the risks associated with multiple exposures currently underexplored. We propose an innovative approach to detect as many pesticide exposure markers as possible in an untargeted manner by combining three complementary mass spectrometry platforms coupled with chromatography. This approach, based on the exposome concept (Wild, David), allows us to produce exposure data on a wide range of pesticides and metabolites by screening a broad panel of exposure markers. The results demonstrate the added value of this approach, applied to two epidemiological studies (PELAGIE and Nutrinet-Santé), to test for associations with health parameters.L'exposition humaine aux contaminants, dont les pesticides, est généralement estimée par des méthodes indirectes.
